Book Eats Shoots Leaves

Download or read book Eats Shoots Leaves written by Lynne Truss and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2004-04-12 with total page 119 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We all know the basics of punctuation. Or do we? A look at most neighborhood signage tells a different story. Through sloppy usage and low standards on the internet, in email, and now text messages, we have made proper punctuation an endangered species. In Eats, Shoots & Leaves, former editor Lynne Truss dares to say, in her delightfully urbane, witty, and very English way, that it is time to look at our commas and semicolons and see them as the wonderful and necessary things they are. This is a book for people who love punctuation and get upset when it is mishandled. From the invention of the question mark in the time of Charlemagne to George Orwell shunning the semicolon, this lively history makes a powerful case for the preservation of a system of printing conventions that is much too subtle to be mucked about with.

Book Punctuation

Download or read book Punctuation written by WhiteSmoke and published by Lumen Deo. This book was released on 2014-01-22 with total page 103 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If you sometimes get confused between a colon and a semicolon or a hyphen, dash, or em-dash, then you are not alone. In fact, not only are you not alone, but you join the majority of people in this world who can speak English fluently, but who don’t know the first thing about the details of punctuation. Out of the many important elements of writing, punctuation may be the most essential. Punctuation helps direct us through written language with its system of symbols and the rules for using them. Correct usage of punctuation symbols like commas and periods, as well as spaces, capital letters and many other conventions, help the reader avoid confusion and understand more clearly what the writer has intended. Punctuation also affects the rhythm of how a sentence is read, as well as the actual meaning of the writing. To really understand how important proper punctuation is, look at the following simple sentence: I did it. With the period at the end, it is a basic statement of fact. If we change the period to an exclamation point – I did it! – there is a distinct sense of pride from accomplishing something. And with a question mark at the end – I did it? – the writer expresses wonderment and disbelief in having done something. These minute changes in punctuation alter the entire tone and meaning of the basic sentence. And these three punctuation marks – the period, exclamation point, and question mark – exemplify only a tiny part of the vast amount of power that lies in correct punctuation.
