Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Everything is Choreography: The Musical Theater of Tommy Tune is the first full-scale analysis of the work of Tommy Tune, and his place in a lineage of Broadway's great director-choreographers. The decade of the 1980s was considered a low point for the American musical. Tune's predecessors in the art of complete musical staging like Jerome Robbins, Bob Fosse, Gower Champion, and Michael Bennett were either dead or withdrawn from the Broadway arena. Yet it was the period of Tune's greatest success. The book examines how he adapted to an increasingly corporatized, high-stakes producing and funding environment. It considers how Tune kept the American musical a thriving, creative enterprise at a time when Broadway was dominated by British imports. It investigates Tune's work of the last twenty-five years, when he shifted his attentions to touring and regional productions, far from the glare of Broadway. Unlike his fellow director-choreographers, Tune also maintained a successful performing career, and the book details the deft balancing act that kept him working as a popular singer-dancer-actor while directing a series of striking and influential Broadway musicals"--

Book excerpt: Reality and fantasy are entwined in this gripping story of one woman's journey to find inner strength in a psychologically destructive relationship. September (Seppie) Webb, a divorced, middle-aged New Yorker, had always viewed marriage and romance idealistically. Her pursuit to meet a virtuous and charismatic man who can ignite the flame inside of her is a challenge, at best. Hungry for passion after leaving a lifeless marriage, Seppie takes a plunge into the sea of single men, and the culture of midlife dating has her frustrated and disillusioned. Unexpectedly, she meets the prominent widowed attorney, Teddy Zezza and is swept off her feet by his charming persona. A whirlwind romance unleashes her sexual prowess and encourages her to take a leap of faith. Lured by his charisma, she neglects countless red flags. After a few months of dating, Seppie has fallen hopelessly in love and accepts Teddy's invitation to move into his home with his young daughter, Lily whom she adores. In an effort to remain in a romantic relationship, she stays tethered to an unstable man and finds ways to justify his actions. Searching for September is a must read for any woman who has ever loved deeply and passionately, abandoned her soul to another, given of herself unselfishly, and questioned every decision during her voyage.

Book Big Deal

Download or read book Big Deal written by Kevin Winkler and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018-02-08 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bob Fosse (1927-1987) is recognized as one of the most significant figures in post-World War II American musical theater. With his first Broadway musical, The Pajama Game in 1954, the "Fosse style" was already fully developed, with its trademark hunched shoulders, turned-in stance, and stuttering, staccato jazz movements. Fosse moved decisively into the role of director with Redhead in 1959 and was a key figure in the rise of the director-choreographer in the Broadway musical. He also became the only star director of musicals of his era--a group that included Jerome Robbins, Gower Champion, Michael Kidd, and Harold Prince--to equal his Broadway success in films. Following his unprecedented triple crown of show business awards in 1973 (an Oscar for Cabaret, Emmy for Liza with a Z, and Tony for Pippin), Fosse assumed complete control of virtually every element of his projects. But when at last he had achieved complete autonomy, his final efforts, the film Star 80 and the musical Big Deal, written and directed by Fosse, were rejected by audiences and critics. A fascinating look at the evolution of Fosse as choreographer and director, Big Deal: Bob Fosse and Dance in the American Musical considers Fosse's career in the context of changes in the Broadway musical theater over four decades. It traces his early dance years and the importance of mentors George Abbott and Jerome Robbins on his work. It examines how each of the important women in his adult life--all dancers--impacted his career and influenced his dance aesthetic. Finally, the book investigates how his evolution as both artist and individual mirrored the social and political climate of his era and allowed him to comfortably ride a wave of cultural changes.

Book Poems from My Pandemic Pen

Download or read book Poems from My Pandemic Pen written by Carol Ostrow and published by . This book was released on 2020-10-12 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When the world shuts down, what do you do? When New York City went into lockdown, Carol Ostrow stayed glued to her TV, afraid of the present and not knowing what the future would bring. But then one day, instead of calling a friend for a "normal" conversation, she picked up her pen and wrote a poem, finding a bit of humor during a dark time. She sent it to friends who appreciated the humor and wit and cheered her on. Hunkered down, hooked on a terrible Netflix series, feeling rather depressed without being able to escape her surroundings to enjoy the theatre, opera, ballet, restaurants and too afraid to venture out in the hall to empty her garbage, she put into rhyme her feelings. The results are humorous, witty, reflective, and sometimes poignant poems that cover the gamut from her expanding derriere, the art of folding toilet paper, reflections on ex-lovers, growing older, and the importance of friends. A morning ritualI have this talent with rare toilet paper,Like a gift, a talent, a great dress maker.I fold, I use, I fold again,Over the bowl, you know.No more space, 'tis time to throw,I do let go,Sometimes, it's true, I feel like fainting. This paper, so rare as a Picasso painting.Did you ever think we would come to this?Forgive me now, I have to diss,Goddamn, no paper, I have to piss.Carol's poems are a reminder to all of us that "This too shall pass." Life does change, we can all adapt and get used to what the future has in store. We will be fine. Just keep loved ones, friends, and the things we hold most dear in perspective, and we will come out of this stronger and healthier than ever.
