Book Pumping for Drainage in the San Joaquin Valley California Classic Reprint

Download or read book Pumping for Drainage in the San Joaquin Valley California Classic Reprint written by Walter Wallace Weir and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-08 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pumping for Drainage in the San Joaquin Valley, California The first comprehensive system of drainage by pumping from deep wells was installed in the Salt River Valley of Arizona in 1919. This method of drainage promises, under favorable conditions, to be more successful than any previously undertaken and the apparent ease with which these pumps lowered the water table has led western engineers to take an unusual interest in it. The fundamental principles involved in lowering a water table by pumping were not new, but until this time they had not been demonstrated as applicable to the drainage of waterlogged and alkali lands of the irrigated regions. This book was released on 2018-02-22 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Progress Report San Joaquin Valley Drainage Investigation Quality and Treatment Studies Through December 31, 1967: Bio-Engineering Aspects of Agricultural Drainage Centuries ago, man learned to divert water and irrigate his land. However, he did not recognize the need to dispose of the salt laden waters that resulted from this irrigation. Many of the fertile lands that were irrigated by ancient man had to be abandoned because of the accumulation of salts in the soil. The ancient irrigators were in no way unique. In West Pakistan, salinity and water logging problems, which have developed during the last 20 to 40 years, have caused approximately acres of land to go out of production each year. In our own state, the early farmers of the Imperial Valley did not provide for land drainage, and many of them went bankrupt. The San Joaquin Valley is not immune to drainage problems either. Many sporadic attempts have been made to resolve them on a local scale since the early l900's. None of these attempts resulted in the necessary master plan for the removal of salt from the basin. When the waters of the San Luis Unit of the Federal Central Valley Project and of the State Water Project are applied to the lands of the Valley, the drainage problems will multiply and intensify. Book excerpt: Excerpt from San Joaquin Valley Hydrologic and Salt Load Budgets: Prepared for the San Joaquin Valley Drainage Program The budgets are based on a simplified representation of the hydrologic system (see Figure 2) and use existing data drawn from a wide variety of sources, including the data bases of the Department of Water Resources' Hydrologic and Economic Model and the u.s. Geological Survey's Regional Aquifer Sys tem Analysis model. The budgets show that the Northern and Grasslands subareas are near hydrologic balance in their unconfined aquifers. The Westlands, Tulare, and Kern subareas are gaining storage, causing groundwater levels to rise over. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Overview of Analytic Framework and Approach of the Social Component of the San Joaquin Valley Drainage Program This report presents the results of a study conducted for the Federal-State Interagency San Joaquin Valley Drainage Program. The purpose of the Report is to provide the Drainage Program agencies with information for consideration in developing alternatives for agricultural drainage water management. Publication of any findings or recommendations in this report should not be construed as representing the concurrence of the Program agencies. Also, mention of trade names or commercial products does not constitute agency endorsement or recommendation. The San Joaquin Valley Drainage Program was established in mid-1984 as a cooperative effort of the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, U.S. Geological Survey, California Department of Fish and Game, and California Department of Water Resources. The purposes of the Program are to investigate the problems associated with the drainage of irrigated agricultural lands in the San Joaquin Valley and to formulate, evaluate, and recommend alternatives for the immediate and longterm management of those problems. Consistent with these purposes, Program objectives address the following key areas: (1) Public Health; (2) Surface-and Ground-Water Resources; (3) Agricultural Productivity; and (4) Fish and Wildlife Resources. Inquiries concerning the San Joaquin Valley Drainage Program may be directed to: San Joaquin Valley Drainage Program 2800 Cottage Way, Room W-2143Sacramento, California95825-1898 The San Joaquin Valley Drainage Program acknowledges the assistance of Kristi M.Branch, of the Battelle Human Affairs Research Center, Seattie, Washington, in the preparation of the analytic framework for the social component of the drainage program, and overview document.
