Book Pulsed Plasma Technology in Microthrusters

Download or read book Pulsed Plasma Technology in Microthrusters written by and published by . This book was released on 1968 with total page 199 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The report describes the pertinent results of the studies carried out in advancing solid propellant pulsed plasma microthruster system technology in the thrust range from below 1 micropound up to roughly 200 micropounds and encompassing the (system) specific impulse range up to 2400 seconds. Thruster nozzles have been operated up to 3800 hours at the 50 micropound thrust level. Complete thruster systems have been operated up to 630 hours at the 140 micropound thrust level (317 lb-sec of total impulse). A thrust stand capable of accurately and rapidly measuring thrust of a microthruster was delivered. Guidelines for including a solid propellant pulsed plasma microthruster system in application studies are included.

Book Characterization of an Exploding Micro wire Pulsed Plasma Thruster

Download or read book Characterization of an Exploding Micro wire Pulsed Plasma Thruster written by Diego Mejia Montano and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pulsed Plasma Thrusters typically live in the low-range efficiency realm compared to other types of electric propulsion thrusters. In an attempt to explore if any added benefits could be gained from experimenting with a new propellant type, additional physics had to be incorporated into the classical RLC model approach. A study into modeling how a micro-wire propellant would react when subjected to energy deposition via current-driven heating was undertaken. Once a first-order estimate, verified with computational estimates, was obtained then the classical RLC series circuit model could be used to compare and validate the results obtained from experimentation. It was found that while the proposed propellant type is feasible, it produced performance differences that could not be explained solely by the classical model and a more exhaustive investigation into various phenomena will have to be pursued.

Book Pulsed Plasma Propulsion Technology

Download or read book Pulsed Plasma Propulsion Technology written by Dominic J. Palumbo and published by . This book was released on 1977 with total page 43 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A pulsed plasma thruster system delivering one millipound of thrust at a sustained firing rate of .16 Hz and specific impulse of 1620 seconds was developed, designed, fabricated, and tested for a total of 12,183 pound-seconds (55, 714 Newton-seconds) of total impulse prior to voluntary shut-down of the test. The system utilizes high energy density 40 Joules/pound (81.7J/kg) KF-film capacitors and a completely packaged bread-board power converter. A total impulse capability of 37,500 pounds-seconds (166, 810 Newton-seconds) was designed into the system and the resulting 23.44 pounds (10.63 kg) of solid Teflon propellant is stored in the shape of a helical coil having an outside diameter of 17.32 inches (44 cm) and overall height of 6.25 inches (15.88 cm). The system was refurbished after completion of the endurance test so that the total compliment of propellant could be restored and run to complete depletion at the AFRPL during their in-house endurance test. This report describes in detail the system and results of endurance testing at Fairchild Republic Company. (Author).
