Book Undulators and Free Electron Lasers

Download or read book Undulators and Free Electron Lasers written by P. Luchini and published by . This book was released on 1990-07-19 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a reference text for all those working in free-electron laser research as well as being a learning aid for physicists and graduate students who wish an introduction to this field. Only a basic understanding of relativistic mechanics and electromagnetism is presupposed. After an overview of early developments and general principles of operation, the different models that can be used to describe free-electron lasers are presented, organized according to their range of applicability. The relevent conceptual and mathematical constructs are built up from first principles with attention to obtaining the practically important results in a simple but rigorous way. Interaction of the undulator with the driving electron accelerator and the laser cavity and design of undulator magnets are treated and an overview is given of some typical experiments.

Book High Efficiency High Brightness X ray Free Electron Laser Pulses Via Fresh Bunch Self seeding and Undulator Tapering

This book was released on 2017 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The advent of the X-ray Free Electron Laser (XFEL) as the world's brightest light source has opened the door to the study of natural phenomena occurring on Angstrom level spatial scales and femtosecond time intervals. After more than five years of successful operation, there is a demand from the scientific community to further increase the brightness and peak power one hundred times more than the state-of-the art to reach TW power X-ray pulses in the next generation of XFELs. The central subject of this dissertation is the study of strategies to achieve high efficiency, high power XFEL pulses via optimized undulator tapering and the novel technique of fresh bunch self-seeding which we demonstrate experimentally in this work. Our work begins with theoretical and numerical investigations of high efficiency XFELs in which we determine the primary factors which prevent the efficiency from reaching values on the order of 10 %, which correspond to TW-power pulses. The initial studies focus on the dependence of the peak power of a TW-level self-seeded tapered XFEL on the transverse electron distribution. We show via numerical simulations that more uniform transverse distributions (parabolic or flat) can increase the efficiency compared to transversely Gaussian beams from 2.8 % to 4.8 %, corresponding to an increase in peak power from 1.6 TW to 2.6 TW in a 200 m undulator. These numerical studies emphasize the contribution of two physical phenomena, diffraction and the synchrotron sideband instability, as the primary obstacles to reaching TW peak power in a compact undulator system. To circumvent these issues we propose two improvements for high extraction efficiency tapered XFELs: a new development in FEL hardware through the proposal of an Advanced Gradient Undulator (AGU), and a new technique for the efficient generation of high power XFEL radiation which we name fresh bunch self-seeding. We analyze in detail the performance of a high efficiency AGU by carrying out the first dedicated comparative numerical optimization study of a tapered FEL including and intentionally disabling time dependent effects. Combining the AGU design with an optimized undulator taper and a fresh bunch self-seeded system yields a peak efficiency in simulation of 12 % with 6.3 TW of peak power in a 100 m undulator. Following the numerical and theoretical studies of tapered XFELs, the remainder of the work describes the first experimental demonstration of fresh bunch self seeding in an XFEL. With this scheme we are able to generate high power (50 GW) narrow bandwidth ($\delta \omega/\omega_0=8\times 10^{-5}$) short X-ray pulses ($\delta t

Book Multimode Simulations of Free Electron Lasers

Download or read book Multimode Simulations of Free Electron Lasers written by Joseph Blau and published by . This book was released on 2002-03-01 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The results of theoretical research on Free Electron Lasers (FELs) are presented. Basic FEL physics is reviewed, using a previously developed classical theory. Numerical simulations based on this theory are described, and numerous examples show how they have been used to increase understanding of existing FELs and to help plan new experiments. Single-mode simulations that follow the evolution of a single-frequency plane wave provide insight into important physical effects in FELs. Results show how these simulations are used to evaluate new FEL designs such as inverse-tapered and step-tapered undulators. Longitudinal multimode simulations model plane waves using finite-length electron and optical pulses. These simulations are used to study coherence evolution in various FEL designs, and to explain effects such as limit-cycle behavior. Transverse multimode simulations that allow for the finite transverse dimensions of the optical wavefronts include the effects of optical mode distortion. These simulations are currently being used to design short Rayleigh length optical cavities that are less sensitive to mirror damage. Four- dimensional simulations are also described, which follow the optical wavefront in x, y, z, and t, including the effects of multiple longitudinal and transverse modes. These simulations are computationally intensive, but may play an important role in the design of future high-power FELs.

Book Evolution of Long Pulses in a Tapered Wiggler Free electron Laser

Download or read book Evolution of Long Pulses in a Tapered Wiggler Free electron Laser written by and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The evolution of a long pulse (pulse length much greater than the slippage distance) in a tapered wiggler free-electron laser is studied by numerical solution of the 1-D theoretical model for a realistic set of magnet, electron beam, and optical resonator parameter values. Single-pass gain curves are calculated for low and high light intensity. We find that an initial, low-amplitude, incoherent pulse grows into a coherent pulse whose growth rate agrees with the calculated small signal gain. The transient evolution of coherent pulses is calculated for several different cavity length detunings, and a quasi steady-state desychronism curve is given. The frequency changing behavior of the optical pulse is shown to occur through sideband generation associated with synchrotron oscillations. Pulse evolution with an ideal intracavity high-pass optical filter is calculated.

Book Efficiency Enhancement Sideband Suppression and Optical Pulse Generation in Strongly Tapered Free Electron Lasers

Download or read book Efficiency Enhancement Sideband Suppression and Optical Pulse Generation in Strongly Tapered Free Electron Lasers written by and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 4 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We have carried out fully self-consistent simulations of FEL dynamics in strongly tapered amplifiers. These are one-dimensional initial-value studies in which the electrons obey the single particle Hamiltonian equations that include the magnetic field of the wiggler as well as the space and time-dependent radiation field. The radiation field obeys Maxwell's equation (in the paraxial approximation), with the source current calculated self-consistently by summing over the electrons. The results of this simulation for the strong linear taper confirms the predictions of our earlier analytical theory on strong sideband suppression.

Book Theoretical Study of a High extraction Efficiency Undulator for a Free electron Laser Oscillator

Download or read book Theoretical Study of a High extraction Efficiency Undulator for a Free electron Laser Oscillator written by and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Theoretical issues in designing a high-extraction efficiency undulator for a free-electron laser oscillator are discussed. Assuming that an undulator system consists of a prebuncher undulator and a main undulator separated by a drift, design criteria of the untapered prebuncher are studied. The main undulator is designed parabolically tapered in wave number from no taper to a 30% taper. A small signal gain is enhanced at the low taper section, and the large signal gain is enhanced at the high taper section. To optimize the operation of this prebuncher system, electron dynamics in phase space from the prebuncher to the main undulator is studied. To demonstrate the advantage of having the prebuncher, comparisons of the extraction efficiency and the gain are performed between the prebuncher system and the system with the prebuncher removed. The optimized prebuncher system is then tested for the sideband instability with more complex one-dimensional FEL codes that assume a finite electron pulse and a finite laser pulse length. The electron beam emittance requirement is studied using a three-dimensional FEL simulation code.
