A discussion of raw-material structure and the features used for species identification in pulp is followed up by the description of 117 fiber species. Of these, 83 are wood fibers and 34 are of nonwood origin. The tree species range across all five continents, 29 from Eurasia, 38 from North America and 16 from the southern hemisphere and the tropics. Informative micrographs, identification tables, and distribution maps aid species differentiation, making this atlas ideal for everyone interested in fiber identification.

Book Pulp and Paper Processing

Download or read book Pulp and Paper Processing written by Salim Newaz Kazi and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2018-10-03 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book gives emphasis to wood fiber raw materials, alternative sources of fibers for paper production, environmental issues, paper quality improvement and cost of paper production. Varieties of non-wood raw materials, including kenaf, rice straw, empty fruit bunches of palm trees, bamboo, bagasse, etc., are considered in this book. The process of fiber treatment also varied to meet paper quality improvement. Different organosolv processes of fiber treatment are discussed. Considering contemporary issues, one particular chapter analyzes the environmentally friendly way of processing non-wood fibers for paper production. The book also contains a chapter on the by-product raw materials of paper production and their profitable applications.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sugarcane has garnered much interest for its potential as a viable renewable energy crop. While the use of sugar juice for ethanol production has been in practice for years, a new focus on using the fibrous co-product known as bagasse for producing renewable fuels and bio-based chemicals is growing in interest. The success of these efforts, and the development of new varieties of energy canes, could greatly increase the use of sugarcane and sugarcane biomass for fuels while enhancing industry sustainability and competitiveness. Sugarcane-Based Biofuels and Bioproducts examines the development of a suite of established and developing biofuels and other renewable products derived from sugarcane and sugarcane-based co-products, such as bagasse. Chapters provide broad-ranging coverage of sugarcane biology, biotechnological advances, and breakthroughs in production and processing techniques. This text brings together essential information regarding the development and utilization of new fuels and bioproducts derived from sugarcane. Authored by experts in the field, Sugarcane-Based Biofuels and Bioproducts is an invaluable resource for researchers studying biofuels, sugarcane, and plant biotechnology as well as sugar and biofuels industry personnel.

Book Morphology of Wood Pulp Fiber from Softwoods and Influence on Paper Strength

Download or read book Morphology of Wood Pulp Fiber from Softwoods and Influence on Paper Strength written by Richard A. Horn and published by . This book was released on 1974 with total page 462 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To achieve full utilization of each harvested tree, interest centers on use of all of the tree components. The objective of the study is to determine the influence of the morphological characteristics of pulp fiber from 12 western U.S. softwood species, representative of a wide range of fiber. The effect of the morphology of the wood pulp fiber as distinguished from that of the wood fiber is emphasized because differences in performance of fiber-based products are traced to the pulp fiber. Interrelationships of fiber morphology and pulp sheet properties are discussed. The results indicate that it is not possible to fully characterize the performance of a pulp by a single morphological characteristic and that the morphological characteristics significantly influence strength properties of sheets.

Book Paper and Composites from Agro Based Resources

Download or read book Paper and Composites from Agro Based Resources written by Roger M. Rowell and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1996-10-15 with total page 468 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sustainable development is an important concept underlying many of today's renewable resource policies. Agro-based resources, such as wood, make up a significant portion of modern renewable resources. While probably the most familiar example, wood is only one type of agromass in the vast world of photosynthetic resources. Paper and Composites from Agro-Based Resources explores the great number of options available for producing paper and composites. Using sound ecosystem management principles, the book discusses strategies for obtaining fiber from plant-based resources including agricultural crops and residues, grasses, and recycled agro-based resources, in addition to wood.
