Book Preliminary Boundary Analysis of the Greater Pukaskwa National Park Ecosystem Using the ABC Resource Survey Approach

Download or read book Preliminary Boundary Analysis of the Greater Pukaskwa National Park Ecosystem Using the ABC Resource Survey Approach written by Heritage Resources Centre and published by Parks Canada, National Parks. This book was released on 1995 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Natural area planners and managers have recognized that to conserve or protect ecological integrity effectively in existing protected areas, external or regional biological linkages, ecological processes, and human-induced stresses need to be identified and planned for in surrounding lands. This report is an initial attempt at identifying a broader vision for one such protected area, Pukaskwa National Park on the eastern shore of Lake Superior. Such a vision would include land areas which are beyond park boundaries and managed by others, in order to plan for ecological integrity. The study methodology used is the ABC (Abiotic, Biotic, and Cultural) Resource Survey Method and a set of guidelines for identifying and setting ecologically based boundaries or areas of interest. The guidelines stress watersheds as being the fundamental units for maintaining abiotic integrity; biological integrity is seen to be aided by maintenance of healthy food webs, a full and natural complement of species, and intact natural ranges. The report presents raw structural and functional ABC data for the park area, discusses the significance of and constraints on ABC features as well as their environmental significance and constraints, and proposes a terrestrial greater ecosystem area and a possible institutional area of co-operation for the park. The appendix includes a selected list of species found in the study area.
