Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the same ability to make personalities and events come alive that characterizes his classic Skid Road, Murray Morgan here tells the colorful story of Tacoma, the City of Destiny, and southern Puget Sound, where many major events of Washingtons history took place. Drawing upon original journals and reports, Morgan builds Pugets Sound around individuals, interweaving portraits of well-known historical figures with those who are more obscure but have a special significance: a colorful parade of saloonkeepers, politicians, union organizers, schemers, and swindlers. Morgan begins his account with the landing of Captain Vancouver in Puget Sound in 1792 and ends with the founding of Fort Lewis in 1916, the year the author was born. Between are the arrival of the transcontinental railroad, the boom-and-bust of lumber mills, the anti-Chinese riots of 1885, and more unique Northwest history that will intrigue both new arrivals and longtime residents. With a new introduction by historian and historic preservationist Michael Sean Sullivan, this redesigned edition of Pugets Sound brings new life to Morgans landmark history of the South Sound and the early days of Tacoma.

Book Stealing Puget Sound

Download or read book Stealing Puget Sound written by Jerry V. Ramsey and published by . This book was released on 2015-12 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 'Stealing Puget Sound 1832-1869,' Ramsey exposes the little know political tension between the first British settlers and the Americans who crossed the Oregon Trail fifteen years later. The British legal ownership of the precious land in the Puget Sound region was confirmed by international treaty. The well-known "Pig War" was a direct result of the "squeeze" aggressive American settlers put on the British owners.Ramsey uses primary source letters and journals, plus some secondary materials to document and reference historical accuracy. The book remains comfortably readable but challenges "politically correct" history.

Book Always Another Dawn The Story Of A Rocket Test Pilot

Download or read book Always Another Dawn The Story Of A Rocket Test Pilot written by Albert Scott Crossfield and published by Pickle Partners Publishing. This book was released on 2015-11-06 with total page 775 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All his life Test Pilot Scott Crossfield has carried on a love affair with airplanes. As a child he learned secretly how to fly, and the unyielding ambition to become a superb aviator spurred him to overcome a serious childhood disease. Working for the NACA (National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics), Crossfield achieved national renown testing the rocket-powered planes, X-1 and Skyrocket, taking them to amazing heights where “man had a new view of his life and the world.” He has logged more rocket plane flights than most of the chief test pilots combined. Written in the tradition of Saint-Exupéry and Lindbergh, Scott Crossfield’s inspiring autobiography is a testament to the adventure and achievement of the flight pioneers who dare to live beyond the clouds. Why is “death the handmaiden of the pilot” and how does it feel to face her fifteen miles above the ground? What can a pilot do when fear and panic overtake him? What is it like to be the first man to fly at twice the speed of sound? These are some of the questions Crossfield answers as he explains why he was prepared to devote so much of his time, his dreams, and his aspirations to an experimental plane called the X-15. Always Another Dawn tells of the birth of this plane; the daring of the men who painstakingly designed and built her, counting every extra pound a danger and creating innovations unprecedented in flight history. Here is the courage of the men who flew her, their every take-off a hazardous journey into the unknown. This book is the thrilling story of man’s first faltering steps into space, of the great experiment and the great pilot who “set man on his path toward the stars.”
