Book excerpt: 'Pug Sheridan' proves herself to be a lively protagonist and a sure-footed storyteller in a compelling coming-of-age chronicle set in turn-of-the-century rural Alabama. At the outset, Pug looks back upon the decade that will form her narrative and begins her tale with trepidation: The man I shot had friends whose hearts and minds remain as closed as his once was. It has become my habit to listen for footsteps behind me in the dark...As I stir the smouldering ashes of the past, I can feel the searing heat on my face. Here is a first-person voice that is both sassy and poetic. Pug's 'confession' builds, inexorably, toward what appears to be a justified homicide. Pug forms indelible friendships with six extraordinary young women who dub their taboo multi-ethnic sorority 'The Secret Society of the Seven Sisters'. They are menaced one Halloween night by six drunken, delinquent boys who grow up to form the core of the local, resurgent Ku Klux Klan. The fearful asymmetry between these groups and their ideologies -- one female, the other male, one progressive, the other reactionary, one representing inclusiveness, the other prejudice and hatred -- produces much of the novel's considerable tension without descending to male-bashing. While remaining uplifting, 'Pug Sheridan' is written in a magical realist mode filled with cosmic ironies and mysterious synchronies, often highlighted with supernatural overtones. Emphasis is laid on the premise that life is a mystical journey; it's all about choices -- individual and cultural. Yet, if the story is informed, perhaps indirectly, by the influence of Garcia Marquez or Toni Morrison, it also draws upon some of the archetypal plot conventions of the Victorian novel, making for a unique blending of disparate influences. A page-turner with a rapid pulse, 'Pug Sheridan' will be treasured by readers of all ages.

Book Farm Boy City Girl

Download or read book Farm Boy City Girl written by John "Gene" E. Dawson and published by MiRiona Publishing. This book was released on 2020-04-22 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 1930s, John "Gene" E. Dawson was a shy, insecure boy who had been born to a struggling Iowa farm family during the Great Depression. In his memoir, Farm Boy, City Girl: From Gene to Miss Gina, Gene first recalls his years as a "Farm Boy," when he and his brothers worked alongside their parents as soon as they were able and attended country school. But life wasn't all work and school, and he writes about his love for and time with his extended Irish Catholic family. As a teenager, the "Farm Boy" realized that he never would be like his male peers and interested in girls. When Gene eventually decided that he could not lead a double life and pretend to be heterosexual, he began his life away from the farm as a "City Girl," complete with beautiful clothes and makeup. But that chapter in his life came to an abrupt halt when tragedy struck his family. It would be four more years before he again could live in a city. Gene's life story takes the reader through the twists and turns of reconciling his love of family, God, and the Catholic Church with being able to accept himself. As Gene tried to live a life true to himself, there were some turbulent times in a world where not everyone was accepting of the gay lifestyle.

Book Betrayed by Rita Hayworth

Download or read book Betrayed by Rita Hayworth written by Manuel Puig and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2022-06-14 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Manuel Puig's "dazzling and wholly original debut" (New York Times Book Review) is a startling anatomy of a small town in thrall to its own petty lusts, betrayals, scandals, thefts, and gossip--but most of all, to the movies. When it appeared in 1968, Manuel Puig’s debut—a portrait of the artist as a child in small-town Argentina—was hailed as revolutionary. Borrowing from the language of "true romance" and movie magazines, the techniques of American modernism, and Hollywood montage, Puig created an exuberant queer aesthetic while also celebrating the secret lives of women. Hanging on the conversations of his mother, friends, and neighbors, Puig's stand-in Toto pieces together stories as full of passion, desire, and revenge as anything dreamed up for the silver screen. “A screamingly funny book, with scenes of such utter bathos that only a student of final reels such as Puig could possibly have verbally recreated for us” (Alexander Coleman, New York Times), it is also a bittersweet love letter to the the golden age of Hollywood.

Book excerpt: In the early 1930s, George Raft, an actor and dancer from New York City's Hell's Kitchen, gained a name for himself playing stylish and charismatic gangsters in films like 1932's original Scarface. Raft's own real-life connection to the New York mob added frightening authenticity to his portrayals, and his star quality coincided with the peak years of the Hollywood factory to produce a remarkable track record of successful movies. Highly regarded during his lifetime as a performer, his reputation as an actor suffered a steep decline after his death. This definitive study of all of Raft's films offers intimate insight into all of his productions, including casts, characters, technical credits, and story synopses, and dispels a number of myths surrounding his legendary career.
