Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ‘Nobody’ is a typical, inquisitive boy looking for friendship, except he is made of glass and completely see-through, which makes him invisible to everyone he meets. On his quest through a desert landscape, he discovers there are lots of advantages to his ‘invisibleness’. He can get close to every living thing, “count the freckles under a lion’s chin …strum the whiskers of a desert mouse...warm his toes under a nesting grouse.” But none of these encounters result in real friendship. Loneliness drives him to seek friendship in some unlikely creatures that aren’t always what they seem. From mud flicking elephants to a groaning rock to grooving gerbils to a close encounter with a cold-blooded murderer to a superficial stick-on friend who scarpers at the first sign of trouble. Sadly, the simple-minded creatures of the desert are unable to connect footprints in the sand with a mysterious voice. Even when disaster strikes, for them there is nothing to see because, “…there’s no mess when you’re a crumpled heap of invisibleness.” When all hope seems lost, he makes a remarkable discovery.

Book Sherlock in Shanghai

Download or read book Sherlock in Shanghai written by Xiaoqing Cheng and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 2006-10-31 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shanghai in the 1920s and 1930s—"the Paris of the Orient"—was both a glittering metropolis and a shadowy world of crime and social injustice. It was also home to Huo Sang and Bao Lang, fictional Chinese counterparts to Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson. The duo lived in a spacious apartment on Aiwen Road, where Huo Sang played the violin (badly) and smoked Golden Dragon cigarettes as he mulled over his cases. Cheng Xiaoqing (1893–1976), "The Grand Master" of twentieth-century Chinese detective fiction, had first encountered Conan Doyle’s highly popular stories as an adolescent. In the ensuing years he played a major role in rendering them first into classical and later into vernacular Chinese. In the late 1910s, Cheng began writing detective fiction very much in Conan Doyle’s style, with Bao as the Watson-like-I narrator—a still rare instance of so direct an appropriation from foreign fiction. Cheng Xiaoqing wrote detective stories to introduce the advantages of critical thinking to his readers, to encourage them to be skeptical and think deeply, because truth often lies beneath surface appearances. His attraction to the detective fiction genre can be traced to its reconciliation of the traditional and the modern. In "The Shoe," Huo Sang solves the case with careful reasoning, while "The Other Photograph" and "On the Huangpu" blend this reasoning with a sensationalism reminiscent of traditional Chinese fiction. "The Odd Tenant" and "The Examination Paper" also demonstrate the folly of first impressions. "At the Ball" and "Cat’s-Eye" feature the South-China Swallow, a master thief who, like other outlaws in traditional tales, steals only from the rich and powerful. "One Summer Night" clearly shows Cheng’s strategy of captivating his Chinese readers with recognizably native elements even as he espouses more globalized views of truth and justice.

His range and diversity were limitless as he tackled themes of romance and satire, gender politics and social inequality, with unmatched skill and compassion. By turns poignant, acerbic, comical and tragic, many of his stories powerfully invoke the countryside-its pastoral simplicity as well as its harsh realities-while others capture the hopes and anxieties that accompany life in a teeming city where the underdog and the exploiter are caught in an age-old conflict. For the first time ever, Penguin Classics brings together Premchand's entire short-fiction oeuvre for the delight of the English-speaking world. Along with M. Asaduddin's illuminating Introduction, this pathbreaking anthology features several stories not hitherto available either in Hindi or Urdu. Also included are comprehensive notes that provide the publication history of each story-highlighting the differences, sometimes significant and radical, between the Hindi and the Urdu versions of the same story-as well as a definitive chronology, making this a truly singular collection.
