Book excerpt: From 25 September through 17 November 2016, I was fortunate to serve as the Rabbi aboard the Holland America flagship, Amsterdam. The ship embarked from Seattle, Washington, and at the journey's end, arrived in San Diego, California. Each port of call, from Vancouver, British Columbia, to the Hawaiian Islands, then to the deep Pacific, were all spectacular. Fiji, the French Polynesian islands of Tahiti, Mo'orea, Rarotonga in the Cook Islands, and Nuku Hiva in the Marquesas, made the voyage a fantastic experience. I briefly review each location's 'history', and if applicable, Jewish history and presence, and then describe my visit. Each of these elements encapsulates another facet of this voyage. Of special meaning was my visit to the only Synagogue in the deep Pacific, Ahava v’Achvah, House of Love and Unity, in Papeete, Tahiti. Jewish passengers who accompanied me for the Friday evening Shabbat Service were enthralled by the beauty, warmth, consideration, and invitation of this small, but vibrant, Jewish community. The moments we spent with them were the high point for those who came for this time of worship and celebration. This voyage was a special time and I share these moments in this descriptive book.

Whether they live on the island, in the States, or divide time between the two, most imagine Puerto Rico as a separate nation and view themselves primarily as Puerto Rican. At the same time, Puerto Ricans have been U.S. citizens since 1917, and Puerto Rico has been a U.S. commonwealth since 1952. Jorge Duany uses previously untapped primary sources to bring new insights to questions of Puerto Rican identity, nationalism, and migration. Drawing a distinction between political and cultural nationalism, Duany argues that the Puerto Rican "nation" must be understood as a new kind of translocal entity with deep cultural continuities. He documents a strong sharing of culture between island and mainland, with diasporic communities tightly linked to island life by a steady circular migration. Duany explores the Puerto Rican sense of nationhood by looking at cultural representations produced by Puerto Ricans and considering how others--American anthropologists, photographers, and museum curators, for example--have represented the nation. It analyzes how and why Puerto Ricans have maintained a clear sense of distinctiveness in the face of direct and indirect pressures on their identity. After gaining sovereignty over Puerto Rico from Spain in 1898, the United States undertook a sustained campaign to Americanize the island. Despite 50 years of active Americanization and another 40 years of continued United States sovereignty over the island, Puerto Ricans retain a sense of themselves as distinctly and proudly Puerto Rican. This study examines the symbols of Puerto Rican identity, and their use in the complex politics of the island. It shows that identity is dynamic, it is experienced differently by individuals across Puerto Rican society, and that the key symbols of Puerto Rican identity have not remained static over time. Through the study of Puerto Rico, the book investigates and challenges the widely-heard argument that the inevitable result of the export of U.S. mass media and consumer culture throughout the world is the weakening of cultural identities in receiving societies. The book develops the idea that external pressure on collective identity may strengthen that identity rather than, as is often assumed, diminish it.
