Download or read book Puerta Del Sol written by Francisco Aragón and published by Bilingual Review Press (AZ). This book was released on 2005 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Francisco Aragsn extends the map of Latino poetry in this bilingual collection. Taking its title from the central plaza in Madrid, it chronicles an overseas journey both public and private. Life in the capital -- taking in jazz at a cafi after dark, navigating the underground landscapes of the Metro to and from work -- is interwoven with the more interior realms of loss in poems that mourn a parent, retrace the steps of a late mentor, or express the collective grief borne of terrorism. The work, in essence, inhabits a seldom explored bicultural space: for Aragsn the author is also Aragsn the translator, shaping with his own hand Spanish versions of all these poems, thereby embodying the years he shuttled between his native California and his adopted Spain. "Francisco Aragon's poetry has the clarity of the bright winter sky and the emotional force of high summer." -- Richard Rodriguez

Book excerpt: Exile and the Narrative/Poetic Imagination is a collection of essays examining a variety of narrative and poetic responses to exile. Intended to complement existing scholarship on exile, these essays discuss works from very different parts of the world, some of them relatively rarely studied through the lens of exile, including Armenia, Egypt, Tibet, and Liberia. The book is divided into five parts, each discussing different aspects of this condition such as feelings of loss and loneliness, memories of trauma, and the search for identity.

Download or read book Cultural Mediation in Europe 1800 1950 written by Reine Meylaerts and published by Leuven University Press. This book was released on 2017-12-14 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: International exchange in European cultural life in the 19th and 20th centuries From the early nineteenth century till the middle of the twentieth century, cultures in Europe were primarily national. They were organized and conceived of as attributes of the nation states. Nonetheless, these national cultures crossed borders with an unprecedented intensity even before globalization transformed the very concept of culture. During that long period, European cultures have imported and exported products, techniques, values, and ideas, relying on invisible but efficient international networks. The central agents of these networks are considered mediators: translators, publishers, critics, artists, art dealers and collectors, composers. These agents were not only the true architects of intercultural transfer, they also largely contributed to the shaping of a common canon and of aesthetic values that became part of the history of national cultures. Cultural Mediation in Europe, 1800-1950 analyses the strategic transfer roles of cultural mediators active in large parts of Western Europe in domains as varied as literature, music, visual arts, and design.
