In the preface to the Ode on the Departed Y ear (17 96) the poet asserts that the Ode commences with an address to the Divine Providence, that regulates into one vast harmony all the events of time, however calamitous some of them appear to mortals. This book was released on 2016-10-11 with total page 602 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Publications of the Modern Language Association of America, Vol. 16 From this cursory history of Opinion it will be seen that critics of to-day, with half-a-dozen exceptions, are inclined to believe that Shakspere had no hand whatever in Titus Andronicus, or, - what for our purposes will amount to the same thing, - to hold that he is responsible for only a few scattered passages; and further, that those who do accept the play, relegate it to the colorless period of what has been termed Shakspere's apprenticeship. Moreover, we are forced to admit that the contention as to authorship can never be decided on purely aesthetic grounds, nor yet from external evidence alone, since, as we have seen, this in a measure contradicts itself. Obviously then, agreement can only come from more definite knowledge Of the origin Of the play, -for example, of its sources. If we could only discover them, we should then be admitted to the author's workshop, - and there is surely no better place to study his identity. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 636 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Publications of the Modern Language Association of America, Vol. 9 Without, at present, pausing to inquire what may have been the ultimate origin and cause Of such a belief, the Observer will note that, among all these transformation stories, none, from the beginning Of time to the present day, has kept such a hold on the popular imagination as the tale Of the Werwolf. It would be hard to find another with a diffusion so extensive and, at the same time, with a vitality in literature and legend so remarkable. Why is this the case? If we ask why this particular story of the Werwolf should have extended so much farther than others of the same nature, at least one practical answer is sug gested: The wolf himself is one Of the most widely diffused Of animals. Like his brother, the dog, he shares with man the ability to live and thrive in nearly all parts Of the earth. Wherever man, in his wanderings, has penetrated there he has found, and fought, his ancient enemy. Certainly, in the Hunting and Fishing Epoch, his howling could have been no pleasant sound to the primeval man in his rude retreat; in the Pastoral Age his enmity to the grazing sheep must have made him a never-failing topic Of conversa tion; and the glare Of his eyes across the moonlit snow of a winter's night was a terror to the lonely traveller, in any age. Hence it is that few animals have ever been surrounded with so many gloomy superstitions. NO one has a good word for Isengrim. Even among the Romans, children Of the wolf-god of Death and suckled by the she-wolf, he never was in good repute. His distinctive features, in folk-lore, are ravening hunger and bestial ferocity, l he is the symbol of Night and Winter' and the Messenger Of Death.' Book excerpt: Excerpt from Publications of the Modern Language Association of America, Vol. 18 From a Middle-English poem narrating the events of the Trojan war, we learn that formerly in England, when folk gathered "at mangeres and at grete festes," they listened gladly after meat to the "fair romance" of Horn, which "gestours" were then wont to recite; and, having this romance before us, we can readily understand the reason of its popularity: it interests us, as it did our forefathers, not only because it tells a tale of an ever-pleasing type, but also because it purports to record native English tradition. Mi leue frende dere, Herken & ge may here, & ge wil vnder stonde; Stories ge may lere Of our elders bat were Whilom in bis lond. These words, with which, at the beginning of the fourteenth century, a minstrel secured the attention of English auditors to a version of the story of Horn, form an appeal to which we also willingly respond. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Publications of the Modem Language Association of America, Vol. 10: New Series, Vol. III Guernsey, in Shape a triangle and sloping toward the North, is divided into twenty parishes. The Lower or Northern Parishes are those most frequently visited by strangers; here the scenery is quiet, the bays are large, with beautiful white sand-beaches, varied, here and there, by some bold projection. The Southern coast, on the contrary, is beautiful in its very ruggedness; here, Cliff's a hundred feet in height, wild and fierce, sea gulls and crows with their piercing shrieks, waves dashing against the rocks and into the caverns, all contribute to produce a peculiar fascination on the visitor. This book was released on 2016-08-05 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Publications of the Modern Language Association of America On December 27, 1917, the Association authorized the appoint ment of a committee to consider and report to the Executive Council the feasibility of publishing an I ndex to the Publications. To this committee there were appointed Professors E. H. Wilkins, Chairman, W. H. Chenery, Lane Cooper, William Kurrelmeyer, William W. Lawrence; and in accordance with its recommendation, duly approved by the Executive Council, the I ndex herewith pre sented has been compiled. The committee recommended That the Index contain, for each article, an author entry and as many subject entries as are necessary to indicate the main lines of scholarly interest. Papers read before the Association, but not printed in the Publications, were to be disregarded. However, as the earlier volumes of the Proceedings in the case of many papers contain extensive abstracts and reports, the compiler felt justified in including such titles. Furthermore, it seemed desirable to give brief references to various other matters of interest recorded in the Proceedings, such as International Correspondence, Phonetic Sec tion, and the like. The specification concerning main lines of scholarly interest was also interpreted as broadly as the limits of space permitted. References to titles, or parts of titles, are to the page on which the particular article begins; incidental references to subjects treated within the article are either to the first occur rence of the term in question or to the most important passage in which it appears. Names of authors of articles appear in small capitals, complete titles of articles in italics. As some of the earlier volumes contain articles paged separately, it was necessary to desig nate these as pt. 2 or pt. 3 the Proceedings for the year 1884 were designated as Proc. Whereas those of the following year were treated as a part of Volume I. Other devices and abbre viations are deemed self-explanatory.
