This book was released on 2016-11-14 with total page 786 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Publications of the Modern Language Association of America, 1904, Vol. 19 The second collection of Poe's tales bears, as is well known, the striking and strange title Tales of the Grotesque and Arabesque. It has always been a question of some interest how Poe managed to hit upon this peculiarly happy name for his collection of twenty tales. No satisfactory explanation has as yet been given. In his Preface1 to the tales Poe remarks upon their name, but does not offer any suggestion as to where he took it from. He says there: The epithets Grotesque and 'arabesque' will be found to indicate with sufficient precision the prevalent tenor of the tales here published, but affords no further explanation. Professor Belden, of the University of Missouri, suggests this explanation 2 It is held by some that his 'tales of the Grotesque and Arabesque' got their peculiar title, if nothing else, from the arabesken of the German romanti cists but [the title] is merely a matter of name that might be learned from a book-cover. This book was released on 2015-07-21 with total page 700 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Publications of the Modern Language Association of America, Vol. 18 From a Middle-English poem narrating the events of the Trojan war, we learn that formerly in England, when folk gathered "at mangeres and at grete festes," they listened gladly after meat to the "fair romance" of Horn, which "gestours" were then wont to recite; and, having this romance before us, we can readily understand the reason of its popularity: it interests us, as it did our forefathers, not only because it tells a tale of an ever-pleasing type, but also because it purports to record native English tradition. Mi leue frende dere, Herken & ge may here, & ge wil vnder stonde; Stories ge may lere Of our elders bat were Whilom in bis lond. These words, with which, at the beginning of the fourteenth century, a minstrel secured the attention of English auditors to a version of the story of Horn, form an appeal to which we also willingly respond. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Transactions and Proceedings of the Modern Language Association, Vol. 3: Of America 1887 Ladies and Gentlemen: - I must give expression to the surprise as well as the pleasure I feel in welcoming to this University such a body as I see before me. When it is remembered that this is but the fifth Annual Convention of your Association, the success you have achieved must be considered remarkable. This success is due equally to the strong personality of your members and to the wide-spread, rapidly growing interest in the objects of your Association. You call yourselves the Modern Language Association of America; your purpose is to confer as to the history and structure and literature of these languages, as to their true educational values and position, and as to the best methods to be used in teaching them. You represent a new and aggressive force in education; you are the leaders in the attack now being made on the stronghold of the classicists. I believe this attack is by you made in no reckless or destructive spirit. I doubt indeed if at the hands of any other body of men would the claims of the classics receive a more fair, judicious and firm advocacy. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sub Turri, 1915, Vol. 3 Can ever be, for we receive true friendship for what we are, not for what we can give, for what we wish and will, not for what we accomplish. And when, on leaving the watchful care of Alma Mater, we look forward into the hazy future of our lives, in which we wish to fulfill our. Destiny and accomplish the tasks set before us by the Master, then the hope and happiness of our future attainments is dimmed and saddened by the thought that henceforth our path ways diverge, that henceforth, even though the golden cords of friendship be not broken, yet they lengthen with each passing year. Book The Reveille 1915 Vol 18 Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Reveille 1915 Vol 18 Classic Reprint written by Maryland Agricultural College and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-22 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Reveille, 1915, Vol. 18 During this college year the ownership of the college property passed wholly into the hands of the State. This makes the Maryland Agricultural College the only College in Maryland owned by the State, and should make the people of the State feel a particular pride and obligation to see it placed in the front rank of its class. Though the ownership has changed, may those charged with the manage ment of the institution never forget the scope of the work and ideals outlined by its founders. May the Maryland Agricultural College ever have for its purpose the training of men to live in Maryland a life of usefulness and power, to gain here a liveli hood sufficient for comfortable and generous living; men with power and grace to add to community life, those elements of intelligence and virtue which give a State stability and worth; men of large obligations to the world; men who will assume large duties and carry them to successful conclusion. This means that there must be an M. A. C. Stamp as unmistakable as the inscription on the coinage of the Nation. This institution may not equal others in the number of students, or in the value of its equipment, but it need stand second to none in the earnestness, devo tion, spirit and courage which put into the college work, and into life's work after leaving college. Greatness must not be confused with Size, or worth with Show. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2017-11-11 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Normal Offering, 1928, Vol. 30 Yet a school - any school - is more than a simple structure. Buildings are shells to guard and hold whatever within may be precious. The walls of the Training School shelter knowledge, purpose, ideals - the knowledge that is handed on to children, the purpose of students who will one day be teachers, the ideals of those who are Strengthening both knowledge and purpose by teaching children and students. The prose of day after day in school may seem a dull place in which to seek poetry. You who believe this have forgotten how to dream yourselves awake. Can you stand before children and watch their ideas come to life under your slight power, without an atom of the feeling that artists know? Or do you close your; ears to the rhythm of creation and hear only restlessness? The Training School gives to some of us this broader vision of teaching, through the understanding of those who are our guides. We should be lost in self-consciousness and the fear of skepticism if we talked about if often. To live it - that may be the way of appreciation.
