Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Contribution to the Bibliography of the History of the United States Navy Several years ago the compiler desired to add to his collection of books on the United States Navy, and to that end began the collection of titles of books not in his possession. At the time he had no intention of printing the list, merely desiring it for his personal use. As it assumed large proportions, and through many inquiries from people interested in the subject he learned that no bibliography of the His tory of the United States Navy had been published, he concluded to print a limited edition for the benefit of others. In the work of compilation he has been assisted by Miss Agnes C. Doyle of the Boston Public Library and Mr. Axel Mothe of the New York Public Library. Miss Doyle has also revised and edited the work. Book Ships of the United States Navy and Their Sponsors Classic Reprint

Download or read book Ships of the United States Navy and Their Sponsors Classic Reprint written by Sponsors Of The United States Navy and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-17 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ships of the United States Navy and Their Sponsors This volume has been prepared primarily for the Society of Sponsors of the United States Navy, to bring together from widely scattered and inaccessible sources all obtainable facts relating to the naming of the fighting craft of our Navy - old and new - and the bestowing of the names upon these vessels by sponsors. There is a widespread public interest in these subjects and no ready means of information. Records of Navy namings, launchings, or christen ings have been preserved nowhere in book form. Laborious research has been necessary to collect and verify fragmentary data. To discover exact dates of launchings, records of christenings, and to verify the names of sponsors, it has been necessary to search Navy Department records, histories of Navy Yards, histories of cities, numberless old newspaper files and periodicals of a number of cities, and to correspond with a very large number of individuals. Book Fifty Years in the Royal Navy Classic Reprint

Download or read book Fifty Years in the Royal Navy Classic Reprint written by Percy Scott and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-27 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fifty Years in the Royal Navy IN this volume I have set down the recollections of a lifetime of sixty-five years. It deals with my service in the Royal Navy during a period of over half a century. I entered it when most of the ships were propelled by wind, steam being only an auxiliary; our gun carriages differed little from those of Queen Elizabeth's day; midshipmen were punished in peculiar ways, and seamen received the cat for comparatively minor offences. In 1913 I was retired at my own request, and I thought that my active career had ended. I was mistaken, for, as these pages record, I was drawn into the back waters of the War and became associated again with gunnery matters, with the fight against the enemy's submarines, and with the defence of London against aircraft, rendering to the best of my ability what service I could do to the country. I should not have decided to issue these chapters, which I began writing by way of recreation and amusement after I had gone on the retired list, if I did not hope that they might serve a useful purpose in future years. Book Naval Administrations 1827 to 1892

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Naval Administrations, 1827 to 1892: The Experience of 65 Years This work, which my late husband has entrusted to me, is not of that character that is usually confided to ladies, and I could not have taken upon myself the responsibilities of editing a book which deals with such professional subjects as this one does had not the Author, to a certain extent, pre pared me for it; and, under all circumstances, it must have been beyond the capabilities of a woman had he not pos sessed a thorough grasp of the subject, which rendered it, comparatively speaking, a matter of easy accomplishment. In submitting this volume to the criticisms of the naval profession and general public, I do so in the hope that they will be to its faults a little blind and to its merits very kind. I would likewise request the readers to bear in remembrance the great object the Author had in undertaking the work, namely, the necessity of an adequate navy, thoroughly organised and prepared for war, to protect the best interests of this great Empire; and also the develop ment and general improvement of that grand profession. Book The Navy in the War of the American Revolution Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Navy in the War of the American Revolution Classic Reprint written by James Augustin Greer and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-10-12 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Navy in the War of the American Revolution As soon as the War of the Revolution was fairly entered upon, the subject of a navy engaged the attention of public men, and this was very natural, as the majority of the colonists were descendants of those who owed allegiance to the Mis tress oi the Seas. In October, I776, the Americans (i here use for the first time this distinctive title), had thirteen vessels in course of construction, and ten comparatively large, with several smaller ones in actual service. Early in 1781 all of these, having done more or less good service, had been removed from the list by various causes, mostly disasters. About this time Congress ordered to be built three 74's, five frigates and two smaller vessels. I can find no record of the larger vessels referred to, excepting the America, seventy four guns, a new ship, which was presented to Louis XVI of France in 1782. Private armed vessels, mostly small ones, were fitted out by the Colonies and accomplished, for the opportunities ai forded, effective service.
