Book Bus Services Across the UK

Download or read book Bus Services Across the UK written by Great Britain: Parliament: House of Commons: Transport Committee and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2006-10-26 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Buses are a key local service, but usage has been in decline since the 1950s. The Transport Act 1985 introduced deregulation, but that has failed to reverse that decline. The report examines the particular problems local authorities face in developing and implementing effective bus strategies. It is clear to the Committee that, for many areas, including all major metropolitan areas outside London, the current regime is not working. The Committee recommends more flexibility, and is particularly attracted by Quality Contracts. These would replace open competition with a licensed regime. Operators bid for exclusive rights to run bus services on a route or group of routes, on the basis of a local authority service specification. Independent Traffic Commissioners are another development that the Committee welcomes, and would like to see them have a higher profile and more resources and powers, especially to enforce Quality Contracts and penalise operators who do not meet their obligations. Others areas covered in the report are: securing socially necessary services outside the PTAs; congestion and bus priority; concessionary fares; and the image of the bus.

Book An Air Transport Strategy for Northern Ireland

Download or read book An Air Transport Strategy for Northern Ireland written by Great Britain: Parliament: House of Commons: Northern Ireland Affairs Committee and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2012-11-30 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Air travel is fundamental to family and economic life in Northern Ireland. To facilitate the rebalancing of the economy it is vital the air links to Great Britain, mainland Europe and the rest of the world are robust. The Committee identified in this report several hurdles to overcome. Air Passenger Duty (APD)-despite the APD on direct long-haul flights being reduced to zero, this does not assist the 98.5 per cent of passengers who travel from NI airports on short haul flights. Ways to reduce or, preferably, abolish APD on all flights into NI from GB and on all direct flights from Northern Ireland to any destination should be explored.Connectivity-air links to hub airports, particularly Heathrow, must be, at least, maintained at the current level, and further routes should be actively sought. Airports Commission review-the review is being carried out by the Airports Commission into options to maintain the UK's status as an international hub for aviation. As this report is not due until 2015 and the delay as to the future airport configuration and capacity in the South East of England is causing concern among the business community in Northern Ireland. The Committee urged the Government to expedite the review and its decision, as soon as possible given its importance to Northern Ireland's international connectivity. Internal access to Northern Ireland's airports-road and rail links to all three of NI'sairports must be improved. Visas-there should be introduced between the UK and Irish Government, a shared visit visa for the UK and the Republic of Ireland, as the current cost of two visas deters both business and leisure travellers from visiting both jurisdictions on a single visit.

Download or read book Report on DRD written by Northern Ireland. Northern Ireland Assembly. Public Accounts Committee and published by . This book was released on 2015-09-30 with total page 73 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Public transport has an essential role to play in the economy and community of Northern Ireland. An effective public transport system: (i) helps grow the economy by bringing workers and jobs together; (ii) improves the environment by promoting a more sustainable form of transport, which can reduce pollution and congestion; and (iii) provides a lifeline for older people, people living in rural areas and those with disabilities. In this regard, the Committee recognises the key role played by those who work on our buses and trains, and would pay tribute to them for the level of customer service provided. Over the last decade or so, public transport has enjoyed significant investment, which has included providing new fleets of trains and buses. Despite this, however, public transport remains relatively underfunded compared to Great Britain. The growth in rail travel in Northern Ireland, from 2002 onwards, represents a clear successstory, however, this has not been repeated in buses. In addition, there has been a failure to achieve the aspiration of the Regional Transport Strategy for a modal shift towards public transport. Translink has recently integrated its management structure, bringing together bus and rail operations. The governance arrangements for public transport have not provided enough scrutiny and transparency to drive value for money relative to the sums of taxpayers money involved. There has been a marked complacency in the scrutiny applied by both the Department and the Northern Ireland Transport Holding Company (NITHC) - Translink's Board. Much more should be done to challenge inefficiencies.

  • Pages : 256 pages

Download or read book Human Transit written by Jarrett Walker and published by Island Press. This book was released on 2012-07-29 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Public transit is a powerful tool for addressing a huge range of urban problems, including traffic congestion and economic development as well as climate change. But while many people support transit in the abstract, it's often hard to channel that support into good transit investments. Part of the problem is that transit debates attract many kinds of experts, who often talk past each other. Ordinary people listen to a little of this and decide that transit is impossible to figure out. Jarrett Walker believes that transit can be simple, if we focus first on the underlying geometry that all transit technologies share. In Human Transit, Walker supplies the basic tools, the critical questions, and the means to make smarter decisions about designing and implementing transit services. Human Transit explains the fundamental geometry of transit that shapes successful systems; the process for fitting technology to a particular community; and the local choices that lead to transit-friendly development. Whether you are in the field or simply a concerned citizen, here is an accessible guide to achieving successful public transit that will enrich any community.

Book Phoenix cities

Download or read book Phoenix cities written by Power, Anne and published by Policy Press. This book was released on 2010-03-16 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Weak market cities' across European and America, or 'core cities' as they were in their heyday, went from being 'industrial giants' dominating their national, and eventually the global, economy, to being 'devastation zones'. In a single generation three quarters of all manufacturing jobs disappeared, leaving dislocated, impoverished communities, run down city centres and a massive population exodus. So how did Europeans react? And how different was their response from America's? This book looks closely at the recovery trajectories of seven European cities from very different regions of the EU. Their dramatic decline, intense recovery efforts and actual progress on the ground underline the significance of public underpinning in times of crisis. Innovative enterprises, new-style city leadership, special neighbourhood programmes and skills development are all explored. The American experience, where cities were largely left 'to their own devices', produced a slower, more uncertain recovery trajectory. This book will provide much that is original and promising to all those wanting to understand the ground-level realities of urban change and progress.
