In the others they outline the work for each month. The plans follow the most recent courses Of study. Teachers will find these plans a safe guide, and their use will save much time and effort which can be profitably spent in other ways. The close relation existing between the Kindergarten and the first grade in the public schools has been recognized, and both the Kindergarten and primary teacher will find the chapter Kindergarten especially helpful. This Chapter was pre pared by Miss Katharine Martin Of the School of Education, University of Chicago, and is strong and practical throughout. Many new stories with illustrations have been added to the chapters on Reading, and the teachers will find this new material valuable in making the connection between the lessons on the blackboard and those in the primer. It also furnishes excellent material for supplementary reading. The chapter on Language by Miss Achsah May Harris Of the State Normal School, Emporia, Kansas, is replete with methods, suggestions and material covering this important work for the first three grades. The making of the plan is the first step in the prepara tion work of the teacher. Many teachers do not believe in a plan. They have a program of the day's work and follow it mechanically. The architect or engineer who attempted a piece of work without carefully planning it would meet with poor results. The average teacher does not know how to make a plan. She confuses a program with a plan. The magazines say very little about it. If there is nothing new in material or method, teaching will lack interest to the pupil and teacher. Old plans cannot be used as the subject matter grows, e. G. History; it changes because of new discoveries, wars, develop ments of countries. The children's experiences vary. Some classes have excellent home conditions; others have only apologies for a home. The class that is poor in arithmetic needs twice as much time for that particular subject; children in foreign districts need more time for language and reading.
