Book excerpt: The Inuit World is a robust and holistic reference source to contemporary Inuit life from the intimate world of the household to the global stage. Organized around the themes of physical worlds, moral, spiritual and intellectual worlds, intimate and everyday worlds, and social and political worlds, this book includes ethnographically rich contributions from a range of scholars, including Inuit and other Indigenous authors. The book considers regional, social, and cultural differences as well as the shared histories and common cultural practices that allow us to recognize Inuit as a single, distinct Indigenous people. The chapters demonstrate both the historical continuity of Inuit culture and the dynamic ways that Inuit people have responded to changing social, environmental, political, and economic conditions. Chapter topics include ancestral landscapes, tourism and archaeology, resource extraction and climate change, environmental activism, and women’s leadership. This book is an invaluable resource for students and researchers in anthropology, Indigenous studies, and Arctic studies and those in related fields including geography, history, sociology, political science, and education.

Book Breaking the Ice

Download or read book Breaking the Ice written by Barry Scott Zellen and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2008 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Breaking the Ice is a comparative study of the movement for native land claims and indigenous rights in Alaska and the Western Arctic, and the resulting transformation in domestic politics as the indigenous peoples of the North gained an increasingly prominent role in the governance of their homeland. This work is based on field research conducted by the author during his nine-year residency in the Western Arctic. Zellen discusses the major conflicts facing Alaskan Natives, from the struggle to regain control over their land claims to the Native alienation from the corporate structure and culture and the resulting resurgence in tribalism. He shows that while the forces of modernism and traditionalism continued to clash, these conflicts were mediated by the structures of co-management, corporate development, and self-government created by the region's comprehensive land claims settlements. Breaking the Ice gives testimony to the achievements of Alaskan Natives through peaceful negotiation, and argues that the age of land claims has transmuted this same tribal force into something else altogether in the North: a peaceful force to spawn the emergence of new structures of Aboriginal self-governance.

Book Lower Paleozoic Stratigraphy of Northern Yukon Territory and Northwestern District of Mackenzie

Download or read book Lower Paleozoic Stratigraphy of Northern Yukon Territory and Northwestern District of Mackenzie written by D. W. Morrow and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Previous studies of the lower Palaeozoic in the Eagle Plain & Richardson Mountain area of north-west mainland Canada in the Yukon & Northwest Territories have dealt either with outcrop or surface sections, or with subsurface well sections, but did not integrate these data. This has led to the development of inconsistent stratigraphic nomenclatures and an inability to form a consistent sequence stratigraphic model for the lower Palaeozoic in this area. This bulletin presents a stratigraphic synthesis based on data from surface exposures in the mountains surrounding Eagle Plain and on subsurface borehole data from beneath Eagle Plain and from the interior plain bordering the east flank of the Richardson Mountains. An internally consistent stratigraphic framework is developed, including reaffirmation of some previous nomenclature, restriction to certain areas of others, and definition of new stratigraphic units. The positions of carbonate-to-shale transitions which commonly exert a strong control on structural evolution and on the occurrence of sedimentary mineral deposits & hydrocarbons are more accurately delineated. A detailed sedimentological analysis of the Ogilvie Formation, the most prospective lower Palaeozoic unit for the occurrence of hydrocarbon reservoirs, is also included, along with a map of thermal maturity at the top of the unit.
