Book Public Relief and Private Charity

Download or read book Public Relief and Private Charity written by Josephine Shaw Lowell and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-21 with total page 131 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Public Relief and Private Charity I have compiled this little book because I believe some such restatement of the principles upon which the Modern methods of Charity are based is needed. There is not, perhaps, an original thought or suggestion in it: - an important part of it is direct and verbal quotation; and to every student of the subject it will be apparent that almost the whole of it is taken from the writings of wise men and women who have lived during the past hundred years. Yet I do not apologize for offering it to my fellow workers and the public, for there is nowhere a small book in which the principles underlying our science can be found clearly stated. I speak of "our science," because fortunately the task of dealing with the poor and degraded has become a science, and has its well defined principles, recognized and conformed to, more or less closely, by all who really give time and thought to the subject. From all parts of the world the testimony of the experts is the same, and it is this fact which makes our task so encouraging. We have set ourselves to work to "strengthen such as do stand, to comfort and help the weak-hearted, and to raise up those who fall," and to have found out how this is to be done, is to have taken one step, at least, toward success. Book Modern Methods of Charity

Download or read book Modern Methods of Charity written by Charles Richmond Henderson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-13 with total page 732 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern Methods of Charity: An Account of the Systems of Relief, Public, and Private, in the Principal Countries, Having Modern Methods Quite as important are the facts relating to the judgments of experts in each country, and considerable space has been given to these. Popular opinions, sentiments and prejudices, even superstitions are often influential; as, for example, the crude religious feelings which maintain the custom of indiscriminate almsgiving and the survival of street mendicancy. When the opinions are those of persons with scientific education, modern ideals and long practical experience, they are facts of positive value. The recommendations of bodies of experts, made after protracted and repeated discussion, even if they have not yet been adopted in customs, regulations and laws, have a claim to be con sidered; they also are social facts. Book Biennial Report of the North Carolina State Board of Charities and Public Welfare

This book was released on 2017-10-30 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Biennial Report of the North Carolina State Board of Charities and Public Welfare: July 1, 1930 to June 30, 1932 Necessarily, progress in any public movement is slow. For this reason, we feel gratified that the social program in North Carolina has been carried forward to the extent we have witnessed in the past two years. Changing economic conditions in this country have produced violent social maladjustments in recent years. Millions of people have been thrown out of employment. Deprived of the privilege of earning their daily bread, they have turned to organized charity for aid in their distress. Thus it has happened that social work has taken on a new importance. It has served as the safety valve, as it were, for the country. Its responsibilities have increased many times as new clients have appealed for help. The people who have continued to draw sustaining incomes have been aroused to a new social consciousness. Aware of their duty as their brother's keeper, they have given generously of their means. Usually they have turned to organized charity to serve as intermediary between the public and the poor. Some times they have dispensed their own relief, whether or not this was a wise procedure.
