Book Public Participation Best Practices in Environmental Decision making in Newfoundland and Labrador Analyzing the Forestry Management Planning Process

Download or read book Public Participation Best Practices in Environmental Decision making in Newfoundland and Labrador Analyzing the Forestry Management Planning Process written by Kimberley Karcia Whyte-Jones and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Public participation may improve the quality of environmental management decisions, however, the quality of such decisions depend on the quality of the participatory process. This research examines elements seen as essential for successful public participation in Newfoundland and Labrador. It also seeks to determine whether the 2014-2024 Provincial Sustainable Forest Management Strategy (PSFMS) consultation process met the best practices criteria emerging from the literature. The research used an exploratory case study strategy to consider the specified process, with data collection methods including formal semi-structured interviews and document analysis. The findings of this research revealed that although not all of the eight best practices outlined by Reed were present in the case analyzed, they are applicable guidelines for future forest management participation processes in Newfoundland and Labrador. Two additional best practices were also identified as important for successful public engagement in the province.

Book Public and Stakeholder Involvement in Forest Governance

Download or read book Public and Stakeholder Involvement in Forest Governance written by Rojin Amani and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Forest Advisory Committee (FAC) is a popular governance structure in Canada for governments and forest companies to engage public and local stakeholders in forest management planning. These committees are established across Canada to incorporate diverse values in forest decision-making and to move towards Sustainable Forest Management (SFM). However, scholars have noted many problems and shortcomings associated with these committees and suggest there is a need to rethink the FAC approach for involving the public and stakeholder organizations in forest management by developing a new framework for such involvement. This study 1) investigate how various jurisdictions involve the public and stakeholders in forest management decisions, 2) identify eading-edge approaches for involvement in forest management decisions that are more democratic and deliberative, 3) examine ways the public and stakeholders, other than forest product companies and government, can be incentivized to be involved in forest management, 4) develop a framework for involvement in forest decisions in Canada in the context of the tenure approach that captures the findings related to the above objectives and ensures greater public involvement. The study take a qualitative case study approach, utilizing document review, semi-structured interviews, and thematic analysis. Overall, the data reveal that public participation in forest governance in Canada is weak, especially at the strategic and normative levels of decision making. The results of this study suggest a three-level framework for engagement, starting from forest policy and normative decisions at the top, to strategic decisions in the middle, and operational decisions in the bottom for public and stakeholder involvement. Each level requires its own distinct programs for participation, utilizing different tools and techniques, mainly because each needs to involve a different range of participants and address different forestry issues. However, overlap of some of the participants in each process and linkages between participation programs is also highly desirable. The FAC approach is not an appropriate model for getting public input to all these levels of decisions, but with some improvements it may still have utility in relation to forest management decisions that are operational in nature.

Book Retrenchment and Regeneration in Rural Newfoundland

Download or read book Retrenchment and Regeneration in Rural Newfoundland written by Reginald Byron and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2003-01-01 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Set against the background of momentous economic changes over the last decade, Retrenchment and Regeneration in Rural Newfoundland examines the economic, political, and social circumstances that have led to the current crisis in rural Newfoundland. In this timely collection, ten social scientists explore how outporters are coping with uncertainty, the choices that they are now confronting, and the consequences of these choices in terms of their capacity to sustain livelihoods into the next generation and beyond. Offering both general overviews and specific case studies drawn from recent research, Retrenchment and Regeneration in Rural Newfoundland provides insight into the moral and political economy of Newfoundland, the background to the collapse of the fish stocks, and the effects of the crisis on outporter's occupational choices and migration decisions. Rich in detail and thought-provoking ideas, this collection is the first to examine the interconnected problems and opportunities in rural Newfoundland in light of global economic and social changes.

Book Growing Community Forests

Download or read book Growing Community Forests written by Ryan Bullock and published by Univ. of Manitoba Press. This book was released on 2017-10-13 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Canada is experiencing an unparalleled crisis involving forests and communities across the country. While municipalities, policy makers, and industry leaders acknowledge common challenges such as an overdependence on US markets, rising energy costs, and lack of diversification, no common set of solutions has been developed and implemented. Ongoing and at times contentious public debate has revealed an appetite and need for a fundamental rethinking of the relationships that link our communities, governments, industrial partners, and forests towards a more sustainable future. The creation of community forests is one path that promises to build resilience in forest communities and ecosystems. This model provides local control over common forest lands in order to activate resource development opportunities, benefits, and social responsibilities. Implementing community forestry in practice has proven to be a complex task, however: there are no road maps or well-developed and widely-tested models for community forestry in Canada. But in settings where community forests have taken hold, there is a rich and growing body of experience to draw on. The contributors to Growing Community Forests include leading researchers, practitioners, Indigenous representatives, government representatives, local advocates, and students who are actively engaged in sharing experiences, resources, and tools of significance to forest resource communities, policy makers, and industry.
