Book The Los Angeles Central Library

Download or read book The Los Angeles Central Library written by Kenneth A. Breisch and published by Getty Publications. This book was released on 2016-12-21 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the most comprehensive investigation of the Los Angeles Public Library’s early history and architectural genesis ever undertaken, Kenneth Breisch chronicles the institution’s first six decades, from its founding as a private library association in 1872 through the completion of the iconic Central Library building in 1933. During this time, the library evolved from an elite organization ensconced in two rooms in downtown LA into one of the largest public library systems in the United States—with architect Bertram Grosvenor Goodhue’s building, a beloved LA landmark, as its centerpiece. Goodhue developed a new style, fully integrating the building’s sculptural and epigraphic program with its architectural forms to express a complex iconography. Working closely with sculptor Lee Oskar Lawrie and philosopher Hartley Burr Alexander, he created a great civic monument that, combined with the library’s murals, embodies an overarching theme: the light of learning. “A building should read like a book, from its title entrance to its alley colophon,” wrote Alexander—a narrative approach to design that serves as a key to understanding Goodhue’s architectural gem. Breisch draws on a wealth of primary source material to tell the story of one of the most important American buildings of the twentieth century and illuminates the formation of an indispensible modern public institution: the American public library.

Book A Social History of Books and Libraries from Cuneiform to Bytes

Download or read book A Social History of Books and Libraries from Cuneiform to Bytes written by Patrick M. Valentine and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 2012-09-27 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While the importance of writing has often been recognized, the role of books and especially that of libraries has just as often been slighted. Knowledge, once generated, has to be communicated, preserved, and accessible. Books in their varying formats—from clay tablets to scrolls and manuscripts to pixels—have been instrumental in spreading knowledge, although relatively little attention has been given to the story of books themselves. A Social History of Books and Libraries from Cuneiform to Bytes traces the roles of books and libraries throughout recorded history and explores their social and cultural importance within differing societies and changing times. It presents the history of books from clay tablets to e-books and the history of libraries, whether built of bricks or bytes. Following an introduction that sets the theoretical basis for the historical importance of books and libraries, chapters alternate between the history of the book and the history of libraries. Included within the chapters are short excursions on some particular development, such as book emblems or cataloging. Case studies are given as thematic illustrations of libraries everywhere. Patrick M. Valentine argues that social and cultural forces have been more influential in determining the nature and status of information, books, and libraries than has technology. But A Social History of Books and Libraries is far from a jeremiad against technology; rather it presents history within the subtle yet shifting context of time and place. Although written primarily for librarians and library students, it will also be of interest to a wider audience of scholars and those interested in books, libraries, and cultural history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Libraries of California: Containing Descriptions of the Principal Private and Public Libraries Throughout the State Moralz'a S. Gregorz'z' Papa, in thirty-five books, and in double-columned Latin text; the small, close Gothic lettering of the fourteenth century, is a marvel of evenness and caligraphic skill. The numerous marginals and references, in Greek style, and the preface and index, which are in larger and more open letters, and of a later period, present less excellencies. The running title consists of blue roman numerals with red tracery, accompanied at times by an index to the contents of the page, in the same Style as the marginals. The chapter divisions are, on the other hand, marked in black Arabics, and the same figures in red are used to number the lines. The books begin with large blue head-pieces, adorned with intricate tracery in red and blue, smaller initials of the same class being used at the head of the rare paragraphs, while every sentence starts with a red letter. In the in dex these initials are very profuse, and occur in alternate red and blue. Red underlining is also frequent, but rubrics are rare. This monument of the patient labor of monastic clerici forms a thick folio volume of vellum leaves, bound in parchment covered pasteboard, and bearing on the recto of the cover a triangular shield with colored em blazoning. Book Literacy Skills as Local Intangible Capital

Download or read book Literacy Skills as Local Intangible Capital written by Sofia Kotilainen and published by Suomalaisen Kirjallisuuden Seura. This book was released on 2016-09-15 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book studies the ”grey area” of the success story of rural lending libraries in the Nordic countries through the activities of people’s libraries in one area of Central Finland. The study explores the influence of social, cultural, geographical and economic phenomena, such as the spread of revivalist movements, on the reading habits of the local population and reveals interesting reasons why the establishment of elementary schools and popular libraries and the growth of functional literacy did not automatically increase the informational capital of the common people of remote regions or lead to their social advancement. This study represents a methodological experiment in describing the life history of a people’s library. The combination of collective biographical and transnational comparative methods with rarely utilized original sources in this study is innovative and has not been used before in Finnish historical research on functional literacy and popular libraries. The advantage of the comparison is that it reveals the attitudes to libraries that were characteristic of each of the cultures involved. For the people of the Finnish countryside in the late nineteenth century, libraries represented a way of acquiring new information that was still strange and unwelcome. The distribution of immaterial capital was extremely uneven with regard to age, gender and social rank. In the earlier Finnish research has not very often been analysed, how the communal status of the peasant reader and his or her personal networks in the local community affected the quality of his or her reading habits. This book shows, that the location of the library in its local community and on the other hand the status and position of its customers in their networks, had a great significance on the use of the library and thus to the improvement of reading skills.
