Book Instruments of Debtstruction A New Database of Interwar Debt

Download or read book Instruments of Debtstruction A New Database of Interwar Debt written by Mr.Nicolas End and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2019-10-25 with total page 47 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We construct a new, comprehensive instrument-level database of sovereign debt for 18 advanced and emerging countries over the period 1913–46. The database contains data on amounts outstanding for some 3,800 individual debt instruments as well as associated qualitative information, including instrument type, coupon rate, maturity, and currency of issue. This information can provide unique insights into various policies implemented in the interwar period, which was characterized by notoriously high debt levels. We document how interwar governments rolled over debts that were largely unsustainable and how the external public debt network contributed to the collapse of the international financial system in the early 1930s.

Book Towards the Managed Economy

Download or read book Towards the Managed Economy written by Roger Middleton and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-11-05 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a major study of economic policy making in Britain between the wars. It provided the first full-length analysis of the early development of fiscal policy as a tool of modern economic management. The central question addressed is how Keynesian fiscal policies came to be adopted by the British government, with particular attention paid to the role of the Treasury and to that of Keynes himself. Drawing extensively on unpublished documents hitherto untapped by economists or historians, Roger Middleton challenges the widely held view of official economic thinking as an ill-informed group of people holding ‘the Treasury view’ in opposition to Keynes’s prescriptions for deficient demand and mass unemployment. Instead he argues that acceptance of Keynesian economics during the Second World War resulted from political and administrative factors as much as a conversion to Keynesian theory. He investigates the form and impact of fiscal policy during the 1930s and, through a constant employment budget analysis, shows convincingly that at times of rising unemployment governments ignore at their peril the effects of automatic stabilizers upon budgetary stability. Historians and economists welcomed this fresh perspective on a debate of historical as well as contemporary importance. Towards the Managed Economy is essential reading for all those interested in the rise and fall of Keynesian demand management. This classic text was first published in 1985.

Book Classics in the Theory of Public Finance

Download or read book Classics in the Theory of Public Finance written by Richard A. Musgrave and published by Springer. This book was released on 1958-01-01 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book was prepared mainly for specialists on the assumption that it would provide the background to an important neglected field of discussion in public finance. Since it was first published in 1958, the theory of public goods and its implications for public policy have become incorporated in the main body of the economic analysis of public finance in the literature. A glance at the footnotes of some of the standard textbooks on public finance indicates that this assembly of articles has not been in vain. Probably the most influential part of this collection has been the papers concerned with the theory of public expenditure, which contains two closely related elements. The first is as a part of welfare economics: under what conditions can Pareto optimality be achieved in an economic system in which some goods supplied are indivisible? The other strand of thought is concerned with the positive theory of the public sector: how can economic analysis be used in order to explain how the size and composition of the budget is actually determined?

Book excerpt: Public Finance continues in its stride in presenting the latest information on Indian budget. Over two generations, it has virtually become an encyclopedia on all financial matters of the Government of India, serving as a textbook for students, teachers and the general public and a reference volume for researchers and others. It is equally useful for competitive examinations conducted by various professional and employment- providing bodies. It covers the UGC CBCS syllabus and the syllabi of many Indian universities for honours, postgraduate and professional courses. The book follows a logical and systematic approach. Thus, it is divided into two parts. Part I provides an analytical and comprehensive discussion of both the basics and frontiers of the theory of public finance. Part II covers the set-up, issues and working of Indian fiscal field mounted upon the theoretical underpinnings and international practices and experience. The illustrations are drawn mainly from the Indian scene, with a cross - reference to international experience. The book uses all the modern-day tools of pedagogy like Learning Objectives, Key Terms, Summary, Review Questions and Exercises.
