Book Corporate Power and Social Responsibility

Download or read book Corporate Power and Social Responsibility written by Neil H. Jacoby and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 1973 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of America's most distinguished economists, Neil H. Jacoby has served as a public member of the Phase II pay board, an economic adviser to President Eisenhower, founding dean of UCLA's Graduate School of Management, and a consultant to numerous government agencies and private corporations. In "Corporate Power And Social Responsibility" he gives a thorough, objective "social assessment" of the American corporation. He identifies trends which point to a changing corporate role at home and abroad and he offers creative reforms of corporate and public policy which will promote a more "just, efficient, creative and democratic society." Jacoby finds no evidence to support New Left charges that the U.S. has become a "corporate state." In fact, he says, corporate political power is waning, conglomeration is tapering off, the corporate share of the nation's wealth is holding steady at 28%. Competition, says Jacoby, is on the increase. Where price and quality of materials and manufacturing were once the only factors, mushrooming technology, new business practices and new markets have created new competitive pressures. An increasing variety of product features, services, warranties, credit terms and trade-in allowances have multiplied consumer choices. As a smaller and smaller proportion of personal income is spent on necessities, competition between different kinds of products has become more important (should discretionary income go for a sail boat or a trip to Europe?). In many industries, increasing competition from foreign manufacturers is a factor. Rapid changes in business practices and technology have even made potential competition from entering firms and new products animportant consideration. Still, Jacoby sees much need for improvement. He proposes measures to increase the political power of the consumer, upgrade the performance of boards of directors, expand the involvement of stockholders in company decision-making, encourage environmental responsibility, and make defense companies function efficiently. For the future, Jacoby predicts the continued decline of corporate power as government regulation expands and new, competing interest blocs spring up. At the same time corporations will become more responsive to changing social values and priorities. The rapid growth of multinational firms, he believes, will increase the stability of the world order and promote the growth of regional and world-wide political organization.

Book Public Relations for Public Health and Social Good

Download or read book Public Relations for Public Health and Social Good written by Brooke W. McKeever and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-07-25 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Foregrounding the work professional communicators do to support public health and social missions, this book examines how the principles and practices of public relations can be applied by nonprofit, government, and corporate entities working to understand and improve public health and social conditions. Many organizations attempt to influence prosocial behaviors, such as donating one’s time, money, or talents; participating in advocacy or activism; or otherwise working to protect public health or inspire social change. This book explores research and practice related to communication and other factors involved in motivating such efforts. Each chapter focuses on a different topic, providing definitions, summarizing research, and explaining how it has been or can be applied to practice, and ends with discussion questions to consider and references for further reading. Ideally placed for advanced undergraduate and graduate courses in public relations, health communication, or strategic communication as well as for communications professionals looking to apply research to their practice.

Book Leadership Structures and Accountability in the Public Service

Download or read book Leadership Structures and Accountability in the Public Service written by Carlos Alverez-Antolinez and published by Institute of Public Administration. This book was released on 2007 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Calls for reform of the public service are routinely heard from politicians, private sector interests, civil society organisations and public servants themselves. Public service reform programmes have become the norm in many countries, including Ireland. But the overheated rhetoric that usually accompanies the launch of such programmes is often rapidly followed by the disappointment of unfulfilled ambition and apparent failure." "This book looks at the realities of public service reform in Ireland today. It begins with the conviction that reform is an ongoing process of adaptation to the rapidly changing requirements of society, rather than anything that can be captured in a once-off programme. It recognises the achievements of recent reform efforts, and it sets out some key elements that the authors believe should be part of the next phase of reform. In particular it identifies specific actions that are needed to improve accountability for performance, to adapt organisational structures to contemporary needs, and to put in place the vital leadership capability. The authors recognise that other actions will also be required in the short term, and that the process of adaptation will rapidly move on to other challenges, but they insist that the next phase of reform must, as a priority, address at least these three areas." "The book draws on management theory, international best practice and, not least, the authors' own experience at the frontline of public service delivery. Its proposals are practical and immediate, but are also well grounded in a vision of a high-performance public service that can meet the most demanding expectations of today's citizens."--BOOK JACKET.

Book The United Nations Global Compact and the Encyclical Laudato Si

Download or read book The United Nations Global Compact and the Encyclical Laudato Si written by Oliver F. Williams and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-04-21 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In April 2016, the Center for Ethics and Religious Values in Business of the Mendoza College of Business at the University of Notre Dame with the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC) Office convened a group of scholars and business leaders to discuss the Encyclical Laudato Si (LS) and the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The articles in this special issue are from that conference; the hope is that they will provoke your thinking and lead to new action to make the world a better place. How is it that the secular United Nations and the religious Vatican have a common vision for business? At root, this common vision for business flows from a common vision for society as a whole. For business, flowing from this common vision is a common understanding of the purpose of business. Catholic social thought has always taught that the single-minded focus on making money in business can never be acceptable. The purpose of business is to create sustainable value for stakeholders and that value is not exclusively monetary value.
