Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Barriers to Inclusion offers a comparative and historical account of the rise of special education over the twentieth century in the United States and Germany. This institutional analysis demonstrates how categorical boundaries, professional groups, social movements, and education and social policies shaped the schooling of children and youth with disabilities. It traces the evolution of special education classification, explores growing special education organizations, and examines students' learning opportunities and educational attainments. Highlighting cross-national differences over time, the author also investigates demographic and geographic variability within the federal democracies, especially in segregation and inclusion rates of disabled and disadvantaged children. Germany's elaborate system of segregated special school types contrasts with diverse American special education classrooms mainly within regular schools. Joining historical case studies with empirical indicators, this book reveals persistent barriers to school integration as well as factors that facilitate inclusive education reform in both societies.

Book Public Education in Germany and in the United States Classic Reprint

Download or read book Public Education in Germany and in the United States Classic Reprint written by L. R. Klemm and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-29 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Public Education in Germany and in the United States This book is an attempt at contributing something toward a mutual understanding of two nations which, educationally considered, are at the head of the column of civilization. Having recently received an unmistakable warning, that human strength is not inexhaustible, I hasten to complete the book, which will preach my last sermon, unadorned but full of good will to mankind. As I did twenty years ago, I recently went to Europe to inspect schools, especially, to see what the Germans accomplished in their rural schools, and incidentally to find some educational pearls. I do not care to fill the pages of my book with laws dealing with the organization or administration of German schools, for the laws of monarchies necessarily differ from those of a republic; principles and motives under the two kinds of government are dissimilar, hence also their dissimilar laws. Nor shall I fill the book with descriptions and pictures of school buildings, for neither the organization of schools nor their architecture make the schools. "What can it help us, if we have Windsor castles as school houses, when incompetency, ignorance and inexperience preside over the school rooms!" (Supt. A. J. Rickoff). The teacher is the school; nothing can change that. It is the German teacher's professional preparation which secures his success. I am often asked: "Send me some courses of study of German schools, so that I may get a standard of comparison for our own efforts." Book Higher Education in Germany Recent Developments in an International Perspective

Download or read book Higher Education in Germany Recent Developments in an International Perspective written by Otto Hüther and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-02-16 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Otto Hüther and Georg Krücken analyze the developments of the last 20 years in their new book on German higher education. The foreign observer of German higher education, even the informed foreign observer, struggles to find denominators, not to mention common denominators of a bewildering array of approaches. Otto Hüther and Georg Krücken, in this book, do an absolutely splendid job of offering theoretical perspectives, qualitative and quantitative data, and comparative assessments This book discusses the main higher education structures in Germany, both conceptually and with a particular emphasis on recent developments like, e.g., the growth and differentiation of the system, governance reforms, and the Excellence Initiative. It analyses recent developments from an international perspective, as the German system is clearly embedded in broader, transnational trends. As such, the book provides a comprehensive and detailed account of both new dynamics and stable paths in the German higher education system. This book will be of interest to scholars and students dealing with higher education or Germany as an object of study (e.g. in education research, science studies, organization studies, sociology, psychology, political science), and to higher education managers, leaders, and policymakers who are interested in recent trends in German higher education

Book excerpt: The universities of Britain, France, Germany, and the United States stem from a common European academic tradition and are today among the most influential and powerful in the world. Each has cultivated a high degree of scientific and intellectual autonomy and has served as a model for world higher education. Yet, those four systems are structurally distinct and show considerably different patterns of development. In Centers of Learning Joseph Ben-David sxplores these differences and provides insight into the role and scope of contemporary higher education.

Download or read book Learning Democracy written by Brian M. Puaca and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2009 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scholarship on the history of West Germany's educational system has traditionally portrayed the postwar period of Allied occupation as a failure and the following decades as a time of pedagogical stagnation. Two decades after World War II, however, the Federal Republic had become a stable democracy, a member of NATO, and a close ally of the West. Had the schools really failed to contribute to this remarkable transformation of German society and political culture? This study persuasively argues that long before the protest movements of the late 1960s, the West German educational system was undergoing meaningful reform from within. Although politicians and intellectual elites paid little attention to education after 1945, administrators, teachers, and pupils initiated significant changes in schools at the local level. The work of these actors resulted in an array of democratic reforms that signaled a departure from the authoritarian and nationalistic legacies of the past. The establishment of exchange programs between the United States and West Germany, the formation of student government organizations and student newspapers, the publication of revised history and civics textbooks, the expansion of teacher training programs, and the creation of a Social Studies curriculum all contributed to the advent of a new German educational system following World War II. The subtle, incremental reforms inaugurated during the first two postwar decades prepared a new generation of young Germans for their responsibilities as citizens of a democratic state.

Book Bilingual Public Schooling in the United States

Download or read book Bilingual Public Schooling in the United States written by P. Ramsey and published by Springer. This book was released on 2010-03-29 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This history of one of the most contentious educational issues in America examines bilingual instruction in the United States from the common school era to the recent federal involvement in the 1960s and 1970s. Drawing from school reports, student narratives, legal resources, policy documents, and other primary sources, the work teases out the underlying agendas and patterns in bilingual schooling during much of America s history. The study demonstrates clearly how the broader context - the cultural, intellectual, religious, demographic, economic, and political forces - shaped the contours of dual-language instruction in America between the 1840s and 1960s. Ramsey s work fills a crucial void in the educational literature and addresses not only historians, linguists, and bilingual scholars, but also policymakers and practitioners in the field.
