Book A Life in Balance

Download or read book A Life in Balance written by Catherine Krull and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2011-02-28 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Magazine articles, talk shows, and commercials advise us that our happiness and well-being rest on striking a balance between work and family. It goes unsaid, however, that the advice is based on an outmoded and unrealistic ideal. This volume reopens the work-life balance debate. Contributors argue that to truly resolve work-family issues, we must recognize work and family life as overlapping aspects of a single existence, rather than separate and competing spheres. A Life in Balance? transcends prevailing myths by revealing how paid work (employment) and unpaid work (caregiving and housework) continue to be set against each other, particularly in support of neo-liberal agendas. A truly equitable national childcare policy must be informed by alternative approaches to integrating family and paid work, such as stay-at-home fathers, family policy in Quebec, and work and care in Aboriginal communities.

Book Social Fabric Or Patchwork Quilt

Download or read book Social Fabric Or Patchwork Quilt written by Jeff Keshen and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2006-01-01 with total page 544 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Both historical and contemporary features of Canadian social welfare are explored in this wide-ranging and in-depth collection. Social Fabric or Patchwork Quilt explores the evolution of the Canadian social welfare state from a system based upon voluntarism and philanthropy to one in which the State's involvement has increased considerably. It also shows how the roles of governments at all levels have changed in recent times. Chapters describe the developing Canadian welfare state from Confederation to the present. Beginning with an integrative framework in the general introduction, the selected essays represent many perspectives: chronological, regional, multidisciplinary and ideological. An important feature of this collection is the consideration of providers and recipients. Such wide-ranging outlooks are possible given the diverse backgrounds of contributors, which include historians, sociologists, social workers, public policy experts and political scientists. As well as historical and sociological studies, topics include key programs (discussed in detail), the quality of services received by principal target groups, new directions in research; some contributions even revisit foundational older works and key government documents.

Book Child Poverty and the Canadian Welfare State

Download or read book Child Poverty and the Canadian Welfare State written by Shereen Ismael and published by University of Alberta. This book was released on 2006-11-15 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2005, 1.2 million children in Canada were living below the poverty level. This represents a 20 percent increase since 1989, the year that the federal government unanimously passed a resolution to eliminate child poverty by 2000. To understand the state of children's welfare, Child Poverty and the Canadian Welfare State reviews Canadian social policy reform, and discovers that the welfare of poor children is a casualty of the war on the welfare state launched by opposing political ideologies. This study surveys the shift from entitlement to charity from the perspective of social policy reform.

Book Early Childhood Curricula and the De pathologizing of Childhood

Download or read book Early Childhood Curricula and the De pathologizing of Childhood written by Rachel Heydon and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2009-04-11 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Educators have become increasingly interested in the diverse learning environments of young children and the ways in which children and childhood are positioned within those environments. The documentation and analysis of processes of pathologization and de-pathologization in early childhood may provide scholars with the understanding needed to develop more responsive educational approaches. Early Childhood Curricula and the De-pathologization of Childhood examines what is possible for young children when their education addresses their assets and is organized in ways that expand their identity options. Adopting an interdisciplinary approach, Rachel M. Heydon and Luigi Iannacci shed light on the ways in which joint notions of normality and abnormality are used to pathologize childhood. As teachers and educational researchers, they offer first-hand accounts of processes that take individual children and turn them into 'others' who are seen as deficient or 'at risk.' Through a variety of critical, qualitative case studies that examine general literacy education, special education, early childhood education, and intergenerational learning environments, this book highlights the theoretical underpinnings of asset-oriented curricular practices and suggests what is possible for young children when their education begins from and cultivates their funds of knowledge. Written for those interested in improving the lives of children through interdisciplinary studies, this volume offers sustained theoretical engagement that will appeal to educators around the world.

Book Critical Policy Studies

Download or read book Critical Policy Studies written by Michael Orsini and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2011-11-01 with total page 401 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Traditional definitions of public policy in Canada have been challenged in recent years by globalization, the transition to a knowledge-based economy, and the rise of new technologies. Critical Policy Studies describes how new policy problems such as border screening and global warming have been catapulted onto the agenda in the neo-liberal era. The book also surveys the recent evolution of critical approaches to policy studies, which have transformed decades-old issues. Contributors conceptualize the ways in which public policy questions cut across the traditional fields of policy. They cover both topical approaches such as Foucauldian and post-empiricist analysis and new applications of established perspectives, such as political economy. Conventional methodologies reveal new connotations when used to explore such topics as security issues, Canadian sovereignty, welfare reform, environmental protocol, Aboriginal policy, and reproductive technologies. Critical Policy Studies provides an alternative to existing approaches to policy studies, and will be welcomed by scholars, students, and practitioners of political science and public policy.
