Book Corruption in the Public Construction Sector

Download or read book Corruption in the Public Construction Sector written by Ming Shan and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-07-12 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is committed to provide a holistic view of corruption in the public construction sector, a sector that has been perceived as the most corrupt in the world. Relying on the new findings achieved from a series of qualitative and quantitative studies, this book unveils the specific forms of corruption, the principal causes of corruption, and the prevailing anti-corruption strategies that are used by the current practice. Furthermore, this book provides two metrics that can assess the potential of corruption and the risk of collusion in given public construction projects, respectively. This book will enhance industry and research communities’ understandings of corruption in the public construction sector. It is also informative to policy-makers and can help them come up with some more effective strategies to eliminate corruption in the public construction sector.

Book The Social Construction of Public Administration

Download or read book The Social Construction of Public Administration written by Jong S. Jun and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2012-02-01 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this conceptual guided tour of contemporary public administration, Jong S. Jun challenges the limitations of the discipline which, he argues, make it inadequate for understanding today's complex human phenomena. Drawing on examples and case studies from both Eastern and Western countries, he emphasizes critical and interpretive perspectives as a counterforce to the instrumental-technical rationality that reduces the field to structural and functionalist views of management. He also emphasizes the idea of democratic social construction to transcend the field's reliance on conventional pluralist politics. Jun stresses that public administrators and institutions must create opportunities for sharing and learning among organizational members and must facilitate interactive processes between public administrators and citizens so that the latter can voice their problems and opinions. The future role of public administrators will be to transcend the limitations of the management and governing of modern public administration and to explore ways of constructing socially meaningful alternatives through communicative action and the participation of citizens.

Book Japan Under Construction

Download or read book Japan Under Construction written by Brian Woodall and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "I would like to commend Professor Woodall for his in-depth look at the corrupt "dango" system that has plagued the public works market in Japan. Having spent the last ten years trying to pry open the closed Japanese public works market, I believe that this book lays out clearly the structural problems that block access for U.S. firms. I hope that this illuminating look at how the Japanese system operates will lead to further changes in Japan's public procurement system."--Senator Frank L. Murkowski "Woodall has done a wonderful job of getting behind the scenes to look at the preeminent sector where money flows to politicians. This is the richest and most subtle analysis of this industry to appear in English."--Ezra F. Vogel, author of "Japan as Number One" "An important contribution to our knowledge of Japan. Brian Woodall has dug up quite a bit of new factual information on this understudied industry."--Frances Rosenbluth, author of "Financial Politics in Contemporary Japan" and coauthor of "Japan's Political Marketplace"

Book Public Private Partnerships in Construction

Download or read book Public Private Partnerships in Construction written by Duncan Cartlidge and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2006-09-27 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Collaborative working and partnering between the public and private sectors has been fairly standard practice in some form or other for over 100 years, but it is only in recent years that it has become more prevalent. In the UK, it is little more than ten years since the most widely known Public Private Partnership (PPP), the Private Finance Initiative (PFI), was launched and yet it has already been described by some as 'the new economic paradigm.' Public Private Partnerships in Construction is an authoritative and objective source of information on PPPs, including lessons to be learnt from the past decade, as well as coverage of their spread beyond the UK to governments in areas as diverse as Cambodia and California. With its detailed presentation of current issues, illustrated with case studies, this book provides a valuable practical resource for a range of students and professionals.

Download or read book Public Private Partnerships written by Robert M. Clark and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-10-18 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses Public-Private Partnerships (PPPs) and their potential to protect and maintain critical infrastructure in a variety of global governmental settings. Critical infrastructure is defined as essential services that underpin and support the backbone of a nation's economy, security, and health. These services include the power used by homes and businesses, drinking water, transportation, stores and shops, and communications. As governmental budgets dwindle, the maintenance of critical infrastructure and the delivery of its related services are often strained. PPPs have the potential to fill the void between government accounting and capital budgeting. This volume provides a survey of PPPs in critical infrastructure, combining theory and case studies to provide a comprehensive view of possible applications. Written by a diverse group of international experts, the chapters detail PPPs across industries such as transportation, social infrastructure, healthcare, emergency services, and water across municipalities from the US to New Zealand to Hong Kong. Chapters discuss objectives and legal requirements associated with PPPs, the potential advantages and limitations of PPPs, and provide guidance as to how to structure a successful PPP for infrastructure investment. This book is of interest to researchers studying public administration, public finance, and infrastructure as well as practitioners and decision makers interested in instituting PPPs in their communities.

Book Public Spaces and Urbanity Construction and Design Manual

Download or read book Public Spaces and Urbanity Construction and Design Manual written by Karsten Pålsson and published by Dom Publishers. This book was released on 2017 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Taking examples from major European cities, 'Public Spaces and Urbanity' is a practical guide demonstrating what urban development with a human face might look like. This involves renewing and enhancing humane cities using architecture on a human scale while taking their history into account. Thus the book follows the tradition established by Jan Gehl that regards urban space as a framework for people to live in and socialise. The European tradition of the dense classical city marks the point of departure for this book. Special emphasis is placed on physical and spatial parameters, on development patterns and building types, on the guiding principles governing access, and on interconnections with public roads and pathways --all of which form the foundations of urban life as well as cities that provide safety and security. The book is divided into ten thematic chapters, each providing a definition and general outline of core challenges together with proposals for meeting them. An historical outline of urban development and the practically organised thematic structure underlying concepts discussed allow the examples given to greatly broaden the field of understanding around this topic.
