Book excerpt: This mixed-methods study evaluated the integration of environmental education (EE) into school curricula across 5 public schools in Arizona, USA, from June 2023 to May 2024. The research involved 500 students (grades 6-8), 20 teachers, and 5 administrators. Quantitative analysis revealed significant improvements in students' environmental attitudes and behaviors across all schools (p < 0.001), with large effect sizes (Cohen's d > 2.0). ANOVA showed significant differences in attitudes and behaviors across schools (F(4,495) = 3.87, p = 0.008 for attitudes; F(4,495) = 4.13, p = 0.004 for behaviors) and socio-economic backgrounds (F(2,495) = 4.75, p = 0.002 for attitudes; F(2,495) = 5.12, p = 0.001 for behaviors), but not across genders. Qualitative thematic analysis identified key factors contributing to program success, including student engagement, cultural sensitivity, and inclusivity. The study demonstrates the effectiveness of a comprehensive, adaptable approach to environmental education in enhancing students' environmental consciousness across diverse demographics.

Book excerpt: Scientific Study from the year 2004 in the subject Sociology - Methodology and Methods, grade: A-, San Diego State University (Sociology), language: English, abstract: Based on 14 qualitative guided interviews, U.S.-American and European students environmental awareness are investigated. The topics concentrated on in the interview guide were values connected with environmental protection and nature, concrete actions, awareness of real and possible consequences of pollution, the fear of them and sources of information. Students from the U.S. as well as from Europe value environmental protection. European students are more concerned about environmental protection and more negative about pollution. A higher concern of European students can especially be manifested when it comes to genetically modified food, of which American students don't have any fear at all. Both groups enjoy being in the nature, American students like camping, European ones like to take a walk or hike. Religion influences European students' values of environmental protection, but not American ones. European students consider recycling more self-evidently and are more likely to buy organic food. American students mention activities like not littering and planting trees, which European students don't mention. American and European students equal each other in terms of thinking that Europe is better in environmental protection than the U.S. and their environmental values having an effect on their voting behavior.

The authors address the questions of which behaviors are of climate relevance, who is engaging in these behaviors, in which contexts do these behaviors occur, and which individual perceptions and values are related to them. Utilizing survey research, the book focuses on the measurement of climate-relevant behaviors with population surveys and develops an instrument that allows a valid estimate of an individual’s GHG emissions with a few core items. While the development of these instruments was based on surveys and qualitative interviews conducted in Austria, the instruments were subsequently tested in a set of 31 European countries, revealing the international relevance of such research. The book also concludes with a brief consideration of the effects of the COVID-19 crisis on environmental attitudes, situating the project globally.

Hence, Blue Economy is becoming an important component of future socio-economic development strategies (e.g. this is called Blue Growth in Europe), that eventually can result in increasing pressures at sea, and despite the current regulatory framework (in particular with the Oceans Act, in USA or Canada, and the Marine Strategy Framework Directive, in Europe), it is likely that this situation will continue in the future. Ensuring all those connected to the sea, directly or indirectly, gain a better understanding of the importance of the seas, the human-sea interactions and opportunities to act better and reduce impacts from human pressures, is central to Ocean Literacy (OL). Receiving increasing attention in Europe and USA, OL is a challenge for all parts of society: educators & trainers, children and professionals, civil society and scientists, consumers and policy/decision makers. It is seen as part of the package of solutions that will lead to a change in behavior and practice, thus reducing impacts and resulting in healthier marine ecosystems, whilst allowing development opportunities offered by seas are seized in a sustainable manner. This Research Topic focuses on the issues and options for effective OL worldwide. It discusses: (1) existing experiences in OL (formal and informal education for children, training for professionals, tools for raising awareness of consumers - and of investors in the marine sectors...) and their effectiveness (from understanding better to acting differently); (2) the role OL could play (in interaction with innovation, regulation, economic incentive, social norms...) to support human capital development as key component of sustainable growth; and (3) pre-conditions for effective OL for different sectors and target groups. Questions relevant to OL include: Which knowledge - produced by whom - to share and how? Who to target - and how to effectively reach those targeted? How to design OL initiatives - including by mobilizing those targeted (via living lab approaches e.g.) - to ensure effective OL and pave the way for behavior change? What are the knowledge gaps that limit our capacity to design effective OL? As scientists, it is likely you have many more questions to offer and discuss.

In 2013 the CO2Chem Network (www.co2chem.com) made a successful bid to hold the 14th edition of this major conference. This was the first time it was held in the United Kingdom and attracted over 270 delegates from 32 different countries. It was a condition of presentation that all the work submitted was new and novel. We invited submissions of new work for this Research Topic and manuscripts were subjected to deep peer review. We are pleased that these papers are now being collated into an eBook. We value the range and quality of the papers submitted. These range from novel capture, integration and process through to policy, public perception and economic evaluation. CO2Chem was proud to be chosen to organise this prestigious conference. CO2Chem was founded in 2010 as one of the Engineering and Physical Sciences (EPSRC) Grand Challenge Networks. It is now in its eighth year of operation and its third round of direct funding. It continues to be a forum for discussion and collaboration nationally and globally. We have for a long time associated ourselves with ICCDU and will continue to do so in the future. We hope that the papers presented here serve as a catalyst to further research in CDU and to engagement with ICCDU.
