Download or read book Dietary Supplements written by B. Bryan Haycock and published by Momentum Press. This book was released on 2016-01-22 with total page 125 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an overview of dietary supplements including their definition, how they are manufactured and regulated, what forms they are sold in, and what the most popular products are. An effort is made to provide relevant information on the background, mechanism of action, and the clinical evidence demonstrating their efficacy or lack thereof. This book is important given the popularity of dietary supplements and the controversies around their sale and use. Negative portrayal of the industry by the media, and unscrupulous companies that make false and misleading claims about their products, fuel the controversy. At the same time, epidemiological data demonstrates that the proper use of dietary supplements could save thousands of lives and billions of dollars in health care costs. This book is an attempt to contribute an objective perspective on the matter.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book documents the long, still ongoing battle between the US Food and Drug Administration and the dietary supplement industry. It presents the complex, often subtle, and sometimes overlooked series of events that had a major impact on how dietary supplements are manufactured, marketed, sold, and used today. While the first few chapters focus on some background topics, the remaining chapters walk the reader through timeline of events, legislative actions, FDA proposed and final rules, and judicial decisions that led to our current dietary supplement regulatory framework. Interwoven in narrative are examples of the roles of science, social and public policy, politics, and popular media.

Download or read book Safety of Dietary Supplements for Horses Dogs and Cats written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2009-01-31 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Growing numbers of pet owners are giving their pets dietary supplements in hopes of supporting their health. Many people presume that supplements are safer than drugs, but the reality is that there are very limited safety data on dietary supplements for pets. Many challenges stand in the way of determining whether animal dietary supplements are safe and at what dosage. Supplements considered safe in humans and other species are not always safe in horses, dogs, and cats. An improved adverse event reporting system is badly needed. Also, the absence of laws and regulations that specifically address animal dietary supplements causes considerable confusion to the industry and to the public. Clear and precise regulations are needed to allow only safe dietary supplements on the market. This book examines issues in determining safety of animal dietary supplements in general, and the safety of three animal dietary supplements; lutein, evening primrose oil, and garlic, in particular.
