  • Pages : 204 pages

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The world has long misunderstood trauma. Now, leading experts in the field have a radical new understanding of post-traumatic stress . . . and a surprising new treatment to reverse it could have profound implications for medicine, mental health, and society. Despite its prevalence, post-traumatic stress, PTSD, is often seen as an unbeatable lifelong mental disorder. However, top trauma doctors and neuroscientists now understand that the result of trauma is not a disorder, but rather a physical injury—and while invisible to the naked eye, the posttraumatic stress injury (PTSI) can now be seen on a scan. Most importantly, the effects of PTSI are reversible. Meet Dr. Eugene Lipov. His research and partnerships have led to an amazing discovery that all trauma has at its root a single piece of human hardware: the sympathetic nervous system, controlling the fight-or-flight response. Anyone who has endured trauma, including long-term microdoses of emotional stress, can have this injury. Dr. Lipov has pioneered a safe, 15-minute procedure that reverses the injury, relieving mild to extreme symptoms of PTSI—irritability, hypervigilance, anxiety, insomnia, and more—for survivors to combat soldiers to the everyday person. Weaving hard science with moving human stories, The Invisible Machine reveals how this treatment was developed. It also tells the incredible story of the unlikely team, including the doctor, an artist, Special Forces leadership, and a sheriff, who are working together to change our understanding of post-traumatic stress and why it matters to society. Coauthored by artist and innovator Jamie Mustard and in collaboration with writer Holly Lorincz, The Invisible Machine weaves hard science with moving stories of warriors, prisoners, and ordinary people to provide a stark new understanding of the human condition. The implications for a better, pain-free world are astounding—and that world could be nearer than we think.

Book Trauma The Invisible Epidemic

Download or read book Trauma The Invisible Epidemic written by Paul Conti, MD and published by Sounds True. This book was released on 2021-10-05 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Journey Toward Understanding, Active Treatment, and Societal Prevention of Trauma Imagine, if you will, a disease—one that has only subtle outward symptoms but can hijack your entire body without notice, one that transfers easily between parent and child, one that can last a lifetime if untreated. According to Dr. Paul Conti, this is exactly how society should conceptualize trauma: as an out-of-control epidemic with a potentially fatal prognosis. In Trauma: The Invisible Epidemic, Dr. Conti examines the most recent research, clinical best practices, and dozens of real-life stories to present a deeper and more urgent view of trauma. Not only does Dr. Conti explain how trauma affects the body and mind, he also demonstrates that trauma is transmissible among close family and friends, as well as across generations and within vast demographic groups. With all this in mind, Trauma: The Invisible Epidemic proposes a course of treatment for the seemingly untreatable. Here, Dr. Conti traces a step-by-step series of concrete changes that we can make both as individuals and as a society to alleviate trauma’s effects and prevent further traumatization in the future. You will discover: The different post-trauma syndromes, how they are classified, and their common symptomsAn examination of how for-profit health care systems can inhibit diagnosis and treatment of traumaHow social crises and political turmoil encourage the spread of group traumaMethods for confronting and managing your fears as they arise in the momentHow trauma disrupts mental processes such as memory, emotional regulation, and logical decision-makingThe argument for a renewed humanist social commitment to mental health and wellness It’s only when we understand how a disease spreads and is sustained that we are able to create its ultimate cure. With Trauma: The Invisible Epidemic, Dr. Conti reveals that what we once considered a lifelong, unbeatable mental illness is both treatable and preventable.

Book Racial Trauma Clinical Strategies and Techniques for Healing Invisible Wounds

Download or read book Racial Trauma Clinical Strategies and Techniques for Healing Invisible Wounds written by Kenneth V. Hardy and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 2023-02-21 with total page 417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An urgent, wide-ranging account of racial trauma and its psychological impact. Racial trauma is an inescapable byproduct of persistent exposure to repressive circumstances that emotionally, psychologically, and physically devastates one’s sense of self while simultaneously depleting one’s strategies for coping. It is a life-altering and debilitating experience that affects countless numbers of people of color over multiple generations. Unfortunately, the failure to consider the interrelationship between racial oppression and trauma limits clinicians’ ability to work effectively with many people of color who live amid sociocultural conditions that are injurious to their psyches and souls. Even when therapy is trauma-informed, it rarely devotes adequate attention to racial oppression and the pervasive trauma associated with it. This groundbreaking book provides a comprehensive overview of the anatomy of racial trauma and the debilitating hidden wounds associated with it. Racially sensitive trauma-informed interventions and strategies that centralize race and racial oppression in every facet of the therapeutic process and relationship are meticulously highlighted, making this a must-read resource for all practicing and aspiring clinicians.

Book Nietzsche Trauma and Overcoming

Download or read book Nietzsche Trauma and Overcoming written by Uri Wernik and published by Vernon Press. This book was released on 2018-01-15 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Nietzsche Trauma and Overcoming " shows that Nietzsche suffered from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, and most probably was a victim of childhood sex abuse. I bring convincing evidence from his texts to support these claims, along with a discussion of corroborating psychological findings on these issues. I show that he teaches coping with pain and suffering, based on his life experience, with lessons from the school of war, the wisdom of reinterpretation, and artistic activity. His three themes of the Superman, Eternal Recurrence, and the Will to Power, the heart of his philosophy and psychology, are understood in a new light, in relation to his personal suffering and overcoming. The book criticizes the attempts to diagnose Nietzsche as suffering from various psychiatric disorders, psychoanalyze him as a fatherless child grown old, and outing him as a closet homosexual. These approaches lead to a dead-end. Firstly, it is impossible to prove that someone is a paragon of mental health, not a covert homosexual, and unmoved by a parent’s death. Secondly, these speculations explain only a small part of Nietzsche’s personal statements, found in his writings. Thirdly, and most importantly, they do not change our understanding of his ideas and how they were arrived at; they do not increase our appreciation of him; and do not leave us with any lessons for life (the goal of any good writing according to Nietzsche).

Book PTSD and Mild Traumatic Brain Injury

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) can each cause significant functional impairment--and these "invisible injuries" frequently co-occur. Events that lead to traumatic brain injury are often also psychologically traumatic. This authoritative volume brings together leading experts in PTSD and mTBI to explore the nature, consequences, and management of these interacting conditions. Presenting cutting-edge research and clinical practices, the book meets a growing need among mental health practitioners in both civilian and military contexts. The volume focuses on the complexities of caring for patients with comorbid PTSD and mTBI, whether caused by war-zone experiences, motor vehicle accidents, domestic violence or other interpersonal assaults, or sports concussions. Contributors examine the biological and psychosocial mechanisms underlying both disorders as well as potential ways they may affect each other. Commonly associated problems that may further complicate recovery--chronic pain and substance abuse--are also discussed in detail. Reviewing empirically based best practices in assessment and treatment, chapters offer recommendations for tailoring interventions to different patients' needs. Important topics include how to deal with dilemmas in evaluation and what treatment strategies work best for addressing overlapping symptoms. The book also considers ways to improve the structure and cost-effectiveness of providing care in this challenging area. Throughout, scientific controversies and unanswered questions are highlighted and promising directions for future research identified. Synthesizing knowledge from multiple disciplines, this is an essential reference for mental health practitioners and trauma specialists--including neuropsychologists, clinical psychologists, psychiatrists, and social workers--as well as graduate students and trainees.
