Download or read book The Karoo written by W. Richard J. Dean and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1999-06-24 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The succulent and Nama-karoo form part of the arid south-western zone of Africa, a vast region of rugged landscapes and low treeless vegetation. Studies of this unique biome have yielded fascinating insights into the ecology of its flora and fauna. This book, originally published in 1999, is the first to synthesise these studies, presenting information on biogeographic patterns and life processes, form and function of animals and plants, foraging ecology, landscape-level dynamics and anthropogenic influences. Detailed analyses of the factors distinguishing the biota of the Karoo from that of other temperate deserts are given and generalisations about semi-arid ecosystems challenged. The ideas expounded, the ecological principles reviewed, and the results presented are relevant to all those working in the extensive arid and semi-arid regions of the world.

Book Beef From Grass

Download or read book Beef From Grass written by Namukolo Mukutu and published by Notion Press. This book was released on 2019-02-04 with total page 572 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the course of work as an Animal Husbandry Extension worker, Namukolo Mukutu often had requests from intending farmers on how to start a beef farm, where to farm, and how to farm. Already established farmers, on the other hand, also often approached him for advice with specific problems, usually relating to “how to”. The notes compiled in this book are intended for both these groups of farmers. The message or technologies in the first part (Chapters 1-27) are clear and easy to understand. This, however, is what is commonly taught in schools of animal husbandry. It is essentially the easier part. The more difficult part, and what is not taught in schools of animal husbandry has to do with how the cattle interact with their environment to assure sustainable availability of forage on which they depend. When this relationship is properly understood and put into practice, cattle productivity is enhanced and even continue to increase. Namukolo Mukutu makes this the cornerstone of the book. Sustainable animal husbandry systems are recommended for all soil and vegetation types of Zambia. The notes, provide a very simple and practical way in which the starting point of beef farming, the estimation of carrying capacity can be carried out, out of which the herd size and systems of animal husbandry suitable for the area can be designed and implemented.

Book Process Management

Download or read book Process Management written by Hans de Bruijn and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-08-13 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: • End: pro?t and loss account. As a result, there will be a stage at which the parties have developed relations and prospects of gain, while there are still a number of problems that are dif?cult to solve and that fail to evoke consensus. Each party will then draw up a pro?t and loss account. On the positive side of the balance are the relations developed and the gains collected, on the negative side there are the losses and the unsolved problems. For particular parties, who have no interest in the problem, the latter side is uninteresting; for others, who have an interest in a particular solution of this problem, it represents a form of loss. • Pro?t and loss balance positive for a critical mass: speed. The speed of the process will increase if the pro?t and loss account shows a positive balance for a critical mass of parties. They wish to collect their gains and therefore to make ?nal decisions. At this point there will be an important psychological mec- nism: parties tend to anticipate on collecting their gains, which increases their urge to speed up the process. It is clear from the above, however, that the end of a process is dif?cult to predict.

Download or read book Rangeland Desertification written by Olafur Arnalds and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Desertification has occurred worldwide. The biophysical and socio-economic complexity of this phenomenon has challenged our ability to categorize, inventory, monitor and repair the condition of degraded lands. One of the most important distinctions to be made in relation to land degradation is between cultivated land used for annual crop production and `rangelands'. Grazing by free-roaming livestock is the traditional primary use of the world's rangelands. However, there is growing recognition of the importance of these vast acreages for wildlife habitat, hydrology and ground water recharge, recreation and aesthetics. This text focuses on the desertification of rangelands and explores processes, problems and solutions. Chapters in the first section evaluate interactions between `natural' and human-induced disturbance regimes, thresholds, and non-linear change with respect to vegetation, hydrology, nutrients and erosion. Chapters in the second section examine socio-economic constraints and approaches for preventing and reversing degradation. The book provides a contemporary, process-oriented perspective on rangeland degradation of value to students, policy-makers and professionals alike.
