Book Advances in Psychosomatic Obstetrics and Gynecology

Download or read book Advances in Psychosomatic Obstetrics and Gynecology written by P. G. Pechatschek and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 558 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Sixth International Congress of Psychosomatic Obstetrics and Gynecology, which took place from 2 to 6 September 1980 in the congressional chambers of the former Reichstag building in Berlin, had as its theme "Women in a Changing Society." Partic ular emphasis was placed on the fact that in illness, as well as in good health, women must be considered in a comprehensive psychosocial context. Observations from medi cal, psychological, sociological, and anthropological perspectives on the healthy and sick woman through the various stages of her life presented a wide spectrum of scien tific research. Sessions covering such fundamental topics as the problems of the young mother, women in the postgenerative phase, and the early mother-child relationship were enriched by many recent scientific contributions. Further subjects, ranging from the dialogue in the gynecologist's consulting room through the emotional situation of the gynecologist, body language in female sexuality, and sexual disorders experienced by gynecological patients to psychosomatics and cancer, were pursued in small workshops. Of particular psychoendocrinological interest were the contributions on obesity and the premenstrual syndrome. The results of this workshop and another on unwanted pregnancy have ap peared recently in separate monographs.

Book The Premenstrual Syndrome

Download or read book The Premenstrual Syndrome written by P.A. van Keep and published by Springer. This book was released on 2012-02-12 with total page 121 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite a plethora of theories, premenstrual syndrome (PMS) has remained an enigma. There has persisted in the literature a constant conflict as to the existence of the syndrome, a question as to whether it is one syndrome or several, and a debate as to whether the origin is psychic, somatic, or both. Advances in endocrinology, specifically in radioligand assays, allowing for accurate hormone measurements, have precipitated a more scientific evaluation of PMS in recent years. Nonetheless, diffi culties have persisted in accumulating well-documented data because of the protean nature of the syndrome. Indeed, even at this time, the question of what requires measurement during the follicular phase of the cycle and the premenstrual phase remains unresolved, and is difficult to place in perspective. In view of the persisting conflict between the organic and the psychological schools of thought, we, the editors of this book, considered the Sixth International Congress of Psychosomatic Obstetrics and Gynecology to be an ideal venue for a workshop in which both parties could be encouraged to participate. Towards this end, the organizing committee of the Inter national Society of Psychosomatic Obstetrics and Gynecology (ISPOG) was approached, and their response was extremely encouraging. In this respect, we wish to record our thanks to the Scientific Committee oflSOPG for allowing this workshop to be organized under their auspices, but totally under our direction. We, in turn, stand responsible for the format and content of the workshop.

Download or read book Gynecologic Endocrinology written by J.B. Josimovich and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-09 with total page 688 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It has been exactly five years since I was privileged to write the foreword for the previous edition of this distinguished book on gynecologic endocrinology. Reproductive endocrinology has been established as a separate respected area in the general field of endocrinology, as well as in obstetrics and gynecology. Years ago the reproductive endocrinologist took long periods of time to answer questions, since most of the studies done then used bioassay methods. These studies were hastened by the work of Berson and Yalow with their development of the radioimmunoassay. They were later awarded the Nobel Prize for this work, since it unlocked many avenues of investigation in the field of endocrinology. It is now possible to measure small quantities of hormones in various biological tissues. Since that time high-pressure liquid chro matography and mass spectrometry have unlocked further secrets in this field with their capability of measuring ever smaller quantities of substances as well as their metabolites. Giant strides have been made in other diagnostic methods that interface with gynecologic endocrinology, notably in the field of radiology in the arena of tomography and CAT scans, and now nuclear magnetic resonance. Progress will be pushed still further, and this fourth edition again identifies the leading edge of knowledge. Such new areas embrace the physiology of relaxin, the ontogeny of sexual differentiation, diagnostic procedures on the cervix, functional dysmenorrhea and anorexia nervosa, idiopathic edema, and the misunderstood premenstrual tension syndrome.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book will assist the reader by providing individually tailored, high-quality bio-psycho-social care to patients with a wide range of problems within the fields of obstetrics, gynaecology, fertility, oncology, and sexology. Each chapter addresses a particular theme, issue, or situation in a problem-oriented and case-based manner that emphasizes the differences between routine and bio-psycho-social care. Relevant facts and figures are presented, advice is provided regarding the medical, psychological, and caring process, and contextual aspects are discussed. The book offers practical tips and actions within the bio-psycho-social approach, and highlights important do’s and don’ts. To avoid a strict somatic thinking pattern, the importance of communication, multidisciplinary collaboration, and creation of a working alliance with the patient is emphasized. The book follows a consistent format, designed to meet the needs of challenged clinicians.
