Book excerpt: Third, while researchers in organizational and educational psychology have examined engagement experiences, no research has investigated athlete engagement. Results of a qualitative inquiry with elite New Zealand athletes (n=15) indicated that vigour, dedication, and confidence were core athlete engagement dimensions. Fourth, items for a quantitative athlete engagement questionnaire were created using operational definitions from the qualitative study and then reviewed by athlete burnout and positive psychology experts. Analysis of data from two samples (n=382 and n=343) supported the reliability and validity of the Athlete Engagement Questionnaire. Results from the final study (n=343) investigating the relationships amongst basic needs, behavioural regulations, burnout, and engagement generally supported the main hypotheses of the thesis. Indeed, athletes with higher perceptions of autonomy and competence reported more self-determined regulations; however, relatedness was not a significant predictor. Athletes' levels of self-determined motivation accounted for substantial portions of variance in athlete burnout symptoms: emotional/physical exhaustion (R2=.13), sport devaluation (R2=.43) and reduced accomplishment (R2=.42). Behavioural regulations were also strong predictors of athlete engagement, accounting for 49% of the variance in vigour, 42% of the variance in dedication, and 30% of the variance in confidence. Implications of these results for researchers and practitioners are discussed. Directions for research concerning SDT, athlete burnout, and athlete engagement are also highlighted.

These high-level academic and sport-related demands can create perfectionistic tendencies. Prior literature shows that perfectionistic concerns are positively related to athlete burnout while perfectionistic strivings are negatively related. For the prevention of athlete burnout, physical and psychological rest has been recommended. However, there is no previous study that explored the relationship between perfectionism and psychological rest. Therefore, the present study aims to contribute to the existing literature in two ways. First, the relationship between perfectionism and athlete burnout in D-I collegiate athletes was explored. Second, the relationship between perfectionism and psychological rest was explored in these athletes. A sample of 295 D-I, female, team sport athletes participated. Athletes completed online questionnaires comprised of the Competitive Orientations Scale (Sport MPS-2), The Athlete Burnout Questionnaire (ABQ), and the Wakeful Resting Experiences Questionnaire. Four subsamples were identified from the scores on these measures: a pure evaluative concerns perfectionism group (n = 11), a mixed perfectionism group (n = 28), a non-perfectionism group (n = 23), and a pure personal standards perfectionism group (n = 18). Hypothesis 1 stated that burnout scores would be highest in the pure evaluative concerns perfectionism (ECP) group, second highest in the mixed perfectionism group, third highest in the non-perfectionism group, and lowest in the pure personal standards perfectionism (PSP) group. Hypothesis 2 stated that psychological resting experience scores would be highest in the pure PSP group, second highest in the non-perfectionism group, third highest in the mixed perfectionism group, and lowest in the pure ECP group. Two separate One-Way ANOVA tests were performed to test the hypotheses. Hypotheses were partially supported. The results showed that athletes with pure ECP and mixed perfectionism had significantly higher levels of athlete burnout compared to athletes with non-perfectionism and pure PSP. Moreover, athletes with non-perfectionism reported significantly greater recent engagement in psychological resting experiences compared to athletes with mixed perfectionism. This study contributes to the literature by furthering the research on perfectionism and burnout and being a pioneer in research on the relationship between perfectionism and psychological rest. Book excerpt: Sport participation can be an engaging experience and result in health benefits, skill development, and social camaraderie. However, it can also result in negative outcomes such as burnout. Burnout is negatively associated with sport engagement and the quality of athlete experiences. It also contributes to the reasons why athletes discontinue sport and negatively impacts their well-being. Research has shown that burnout and engagement are potentially influenced by social agents (e.g. parents, peers, and coaches) such as through the motivational climate they create. A mastery climate is one in which success is defined in terms of selfreferenced standards of excellence with a focus on improvement, mistakes being viewed as a part of learning, and effort. Within a performance climate, success is defined in terms of social comparison and outperforming others. This can result in intra-team rivalries and conflict. Although research has shown that the motivational climate created by social agents impacts athletes sport experiences, few studies have examined whether the climate created by coaches, parents, or peers has the strongest association with burnout and engagement. Therefore, the first purpose of this study was to examine the relationship of the motivational climate created by coaches, parents, and peers with engagement and burnout. The second purpose was to determine which social agent is the strongest predictor of athlete engagement and burnout. Following student activities coordinator and coach approval, 150 high school athletes completed surveys on athlete engagement and burnout, along with surveys assessing athlete perceptions of the motivational climate created by coaches, parents, and peers. Correlational analyses were used to examine the relationship of athlete engagement and burnout with motivational climate while regression analyses were used to determine which social agent's motivational climate had the strongest association with burnout and engagement. Overall, a mastery climate created by coaches and peers had significant (p[less-than]0.05), small to moderate relationships with the devaluation and reduced sense of accomplishment dimension of burnout (i.e., r = -.22 to -.44), and engagement (i.e., r = .21 to .37). A parent mastery climate was found to be unrelated to burnout and had small, significant relationships with engagement (i.e., r = .21 to .27). The relationship between performance climates created by the social agents with burnout and engagement were smaller in magnitude compared to the mastery climates (r= -.10 to .19). When all three social agents were examined together, the motivational climates collectively explained 13.3% of the variance for overall burnout and 29.3% of the variance for overall engagement. When examining individual subscales, the most variance in burnout was reduced accomplishment (r2 = 0.26), followed by devaluation (r2= 0.13) and exhaustion (r2 = 0.06). For engagement each subscale was similar to overall engagement (r2= 0.20 to r2= 0.23). It was found that the mastery climates created by coaches and peers predicted lower burnout scores whereas the climate created by parents was not a significant predictor. Mastery climates created by all three social agents were predictive (p[less-than]0.05) of higher engagement with peers having stronger associations compared to coaches and parents. The extent to which parents and peers created a performance climate was unrelated to burnout or engagement. Contrary to predictions, a coach created performance climate was linked to higher engagement, but the relationship was small in magnitude (partial r= 0.18). Overall, when high school athletes perceived that their coaches and peers created a mastery climate, they reported higher engagement and lower burnout. A mastery climate in which success is defined by on effort, learning, and improvement should be created by coaches, parents and peers for athletes to experience high engagement and low burnout.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to determine whether the likelihood of having clinically meaningful depression and anxiety differs between collegiate athletes who perceived sport-related changes as one of their top three stressors in comparison to those who did not perceive sport-related changes as one of their top three stressors during the COVID-19 pandemic. Cross-sectional analyses included 157 collegiate (79% Female; 13.4% DI) athletes from universities in Connecticut. Participants completed an online study survey. They were asked about their: (1) perceived top three stressors; (2) demographic information; and (3) psychosocial health (i.e. anxiety, depression, perceived stress, perceived social support, and grit). Separate adjusted binomial logistic regression models assessed the relationship between sport related stressor group (primary analysis) and psychosocial predictors (secondary analyses; stress, grit, and social support) with clinically meaningful anxiety and depression. Overall, prevalence of clinically meaningful anxiety (38.8% vs. 34.4%) and depression (62.7% vs. 62.2%) was high in both sport-related and non-sport-related stressor groups, respectively. However, there was no association with sport-related stressor group. Book excerpt: This study explored the prevalence of race-related stress, the relationship between race-related stress and psychological distress and the experiences of race-related stress among Division I Black male student-athletes. Prior research indicates experiences of racism can negatively influence psychological distress (Carter & Forsyth, 2010; Dunbar, 2006; Sue et al., 2007). Participated completed the Brief Symptom Inventory (BSI-18; Derogatis, 2000), the Index of Race Related Stress-Brief (IRRS-B; Utsey, 1999), the Prolonged Activation and Anticipatory Race-Related Stress Scale (PARS; Utsey, Belvet, Hubbard, Fischer, Opare-Henaku, & Gladney, 2012), and a demographics questionnaire. A total of forty-seven Black male student-athletes participated in the quantitative portion of the study and ten participated in the qualitative portion. A series of simple linear regressions were used to predict psychological distress. Results indicated that race-related stress was found to be a moderate predictor of psychological distress. Eight themes were identified from the interview data that described experiences of racism experienced by the men related to their participation in Division I athletics: Navigating Labels Imposed by Others Takes a Toll, The Black Man's Burden, The Exploitation of the Black Male Student Athlete, Navigating Layers of Oppression and Privilege, Survival, Institutional vs. Individual Racism in Athletics, No Sense of Belonging and Lessons Learned and Hopes for Future Student Athletes. The study's findings contribute to the literature documenting the detrimental effects of experiences of racism. Additionally, the findings support the significance of cultural considerations in diagnosis and treatment of mental health disorders.
