Book Psychology and Freudian Theory

Download or read book Psychology and Freudian Theory written by Paul Kline and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-03-05 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a clear and accessible introduction to Freudian theory and its status in modern psychology. Paul Kline examines the evidence for and against psychoanalytic theories and shows that, far from being out of date, they can be supported by modern psychological research. He writes for the student and the non-specialist, drawing on numerous, often lighthearted, examples taken from real life and pointing to the implications of his findings for educational, clinical and industrial psychologists. After a brief introduction to Freudian theory and its development through the work of Jung, Adler and Melanie Klein, Paul Kline describes the objections that have been raised to psychoanalytic theories and some possible answers Important aspects of Freudian theory concerning child development, the Oedipus complex, dreaming and the nature of the unconscious are examined to see whether they can be said to be true or false, and are compared when possible with their modern psychological counterparts. The book concludes with a discussion of the broader social implications of Freudian theory and its value for those concerned with child development - parents and educators - and for those involved in mental health. Psychology and Freudian Theory will be welcomed by all those with an interest in human behaviour and by the wide spectrum of social studies students.

Book Toward a Unified Psychoanalytic Theory

Download or read book Toward a Unified Psychoanalytic Theory written by Morris N Eagle and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-07-01 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of th 2023 American Board and Academy of Psychoanalytic and Psychodynamic Psychology (ABAPPP) Annual Award! This book aims to integrate different psychoanalytic schools and relevant research findings into an integrated psychoanalytic theory of the mind. A main claim explored here, is that a revised and expanded ego psychology constitutes the strongest foundation not only for a unified psychoanalytic theory, but also for the integration of relevant research findings from other disciplines. Sophisticated yet accessible, the book includes a description of the basic tenets of ego psychology and necessary correctives and revisions. It also discusses research and theory on interpersonal understanding, capacity for inhibition, defense, delay of gratification, autonomous ego aims and motives, affect regulation, the nature of psychopathology; and the implications of a revised and expanded ego psychology for approaches to treatment. The book will appeal to readers who are interested in psychoanalysis, the nature of the mind, the nature of psychopathology, and the implications of theoretical formulations and research findings for approaches to treatment. As such, it will also be of great value on graduate and training courses for psychoanalysis.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In his later work, Freud proposed that the human psyche could be divided into three parts: Id, ego and super-ego. Freud discussed this model in the 1920 essay Beyond the Pleasure Principle, and fully elaborated upon it in The Ego and the Id (1923), in which he developed it as an alternative to his previous topographic schema (i.e., conscious, unconscious and preconscious). The id is the completely unconscious, impulsive, childlike portion of the psyche that operates on the "pleasure principle" and is the source of basic impulses and drives; it seeks immediate pleasure and gratification. Freud acknowledged that his use of the term Id (das Es, "the It") derives from the writings of Georg Groddeck. The super-ego is the moral component of the psyche, which takes into account no special circumstances in which the morally right thing may not be right for a given situation. The rational ego attempts to exact a balance between the impractical hedonism of the id and the equally impractical moralism of the super-ego; it is the part of the psyche that is usually reflected most directly in a person's actions. When overburdened or threatened by its tasks, it may employ defense mechanisms including denial repression, undoing, rationalization, repression, and displacement. This concept is usually represented by the "Iceberg Model". This model represents the roles the Id, Ego, and Super Ego play in relation to conscious and unconscious thought. Freud compared the relationship between the ego and the id to that between a charioteer and his horses: the horses provide the energy and drive, while the charioteer provides direction.

Dr. Freud covers the hidden meanings within our dreams, especially repressed sexual desires, the purpose of our conscious and unconscious minds, and the importance of dreams to our wellbeing. This title is, in essence, a comprehensive analysis of Freud's psychoanalytical studies, research and empirical observations. Freud begins by explaining the meaning of dreams through presentations of varied real examples. He then proceeds to explain the causes of dreams and their relation to past and on-going events in our lives, he analyses dream elements, and then explores specified topics such as sexual thoughts in dreams and humans desires and wishes.

Book From Freud to Jung

Download or read book From Freud to Jung written by Liliane Frey-Rohn and published by Shambhala Publications. This book was released on 2001-05-01 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comparative study of the basic concepts of Freud and Jung is designed to give a comprehensive understanding of Jung's work. The author traces the development of Jung from his initial fascination with Freud's ideas to his gradual liberation from these powerful concepts and the final breakthrough into his own unique theories of man and the cosmos. Jung's fundamental view—that the psyche is a totality of conscious and unconscious elements that seeks to realize itself—stands in sharp contrast to Freud's early view of the psyche as primarily the effect of prior causes. Hence Freud tends to stress the pathological, whereas Jung looks to the creative and self-transcending aspects of human nature. The final section of the book describes the development of Jung's ideas after the death of Freud, particularly his concept of the archetypes.

Book excerpt: Freud: From Individual Psychology to Group Psychology, by M. Andrew Holowchak, explores Freudian psychoanalysis as a full-fledged science, as it relates psychoanalytically to issues of individual psychology (Individualpsychologie) and group psychology (Massenpsychologie). Holowchak analyzes Freud's shift in focus in his mature years away from psychoanalysis as a "curative" method for treating individual neurosis, to psychoanalysis as a full-fledged science of the human psyche that essays to shed light on group issues, such as religiosity and war.

Book Group Psychology and the Analysis of the Ego

Download or read book Group Psychology and the Analysis of the Ego written by Sigmund Freud and published by Library of Alexandria. This book was released on 2020-09-28 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The contrast between Individual Psychology and Social or Group Psychology, which at a first glance may seem to be full of significance, loses a great deal of its sharpness when it is examined more closely. It is true that Individual Psychology is concerned with the individual man and explores the paths by which he seeks to find satisfaction for his instincts; but only rarely and under certain exceptional conditions is Individual Psychology in a position to disregard the relations of this individual to others. In the individual's mental life someone else is invariably involved, as a model, as an object, as a helper, as an opponent, and so from the very first Individual Psychology is at the same time Social Psychology as wellÑin this extended but entirely justifiable sense of the words. The relations of an individual to his parents and to his brothers and sisters, to the object of his love, and to his physicianÑin fact all the relations which have hitherto been the chief subject of psycho-analytic researchÑmay claim to be considered as social phenomena; and in this respect they may be contrasted with certain other processes, described by us as 'narcissistic', in which the satisfaction of the instincts is partially or totally withdrawn from the influence of other people. The contrast between social and narcissisticÑBleuler would perhaps call them 'autistic'Ñmental acts therefore falls wholly within the domain of Individual Psychology, and is not well calculated to differentiate it from a Social or Group Psychology.
