Download or read book The Relationship Among Ethnic Identity Psychological Well being Academic Achievement and Intergroup Competence of African American High School Adolescents written by and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: AbstractIn the last two decades the demographic composition of the United States has witnessed extraordinary changes in the numbers of ethnic minorities, and no where is this more evident than in our nation's public school system. Due to this proliferation of changes in the demographics of our country, serious issues and concerns have been raised with regard to the mental health and academic achievement of school-age children from diverse ethnic backgrounds. The major purpose of the study was to examine the implications of the relationship of psychological well-being variables (life satisfaction, self-esteem and ethnic identity), mental health depression, and Intergroup interactional competence and academic achievement of school- age adolescents. In group assemblies of varying sizes, seven measures were explained to students to fill out either in school or at home and return to be collected. These measures have been previously utilized and have been found to have adequate reliability and validity (Crumly & Hyers, 2004). The reliability of all the measures was also assessed in this study and was found to have moderate to high range. The study utilized a total sample of 119 African American adolescents from low social economic status ranging in grades from ten through twelve. The findings indicated significant intercorrelations among some selected psychological variables and objective and self-reported measures of achievement. Gender differences were noted in the predictability of achievement of reading. The perceived caring, inter-group anxiety, and psychological sense of membership measures were found to be the best predictors of academic achievement. Implications of the study as well as recommendations for future research in this area are discussed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The influence of the lifespan approach has been an important feature of recent research in developmental psychology, as has a growing interest in the relationship between personality and development. This important new book, edited by two distinguished psychologists, explores the relationship between personality and development from a life-course perspective. The book presents current theoretical approaches and new empirical findings from ongoing studies conducted by leading researchers in North America and Europe. It is unique in focussing on successful personality development, where developmental psychology in the past seems to have focussed almost entirely on problem behaviour and risk of maladaption. The book has a multidisciplinary appeal and will be of interest to students and researchers in the fields of developmental psychology, adult development and aging, and personality and social psychology.

This book was released on 2017-02-07 with total page 509 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Handbook presents current research on children and youth in ethnic minority families. It reflects the development currently taking place in the field of social sciences research to highlight the positive adaptation of minority children and youth. It offers a succinct synthesis of where the field is and where it needs to go. It brings together an international group of leading researchers, and, in view of globalization and increased migration and immigration, it addresses what aspects of children and youth growing in ethnic minority families are universal across contexts and what aspects are more context-specific. The Handbook examines the individual, family, peers, and neighborhood/policy factors that protect children and promote positive adaptation. It examines the factors that support children’s social integration, psychosocial adaptation, and external functioning. Finally, it looks at the mechanisms that explain why social adaptation occurs.

Book excerpt: An introduction to the dynamic complexity of American ethnic life and Latino identity Latinos are the fastest growing population group in the United States.Through their language and popular music Latinos are making their mark on American culture as never before. As the United States becomes Latinized, how will Latinos fit into America's divided racial landscape and how will they define their own racial and ethnic identity? Through strikingly original historical analysis, extensive personal interviews and a careful examination of census data, Clara E. Rodriguez shows that Latino identity is surprisingly fluid, situation-dependent, and constantly changing. She illustrates how the way Latinos are defining themselves, and refusing to define themselves, represents a powerful challenge to America's system of racial classification and American racism.

Book Ethnic Identity Development and Adolescent Health Related Decision Making

Download or read book Ethnic Identity Development and Adolescent Health Related Decision Making written by Brenda M. Frye and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "An objective of this study was to explore the relationship of ethnic identity development, among a group of adolescents in the Bay area, self-esteem, and health risk behaviors. Past research has mixed findings with regard to whether ethnic identity development is a protective factor to adolescents engaging in risky behaviors such as, drinking, drug use, smoking, and sexually risky behaviors. Some research has indicated that ethnic identity does serve as a protective factor among some groups of adolescents when drug use is concerned. An additional objective of this study was to better understand the relationship of self-esteem, ethnic identity, and health related decision-making. Gender, age, and ethnic group membership were also looked at as they related to health risk behavior among adolescents in this sample. Four hundred and seventy seven ethnically diverse adolescents between the ages of 13-18 from local Bay area high schools voluntarily participated in this investigation. This study contained a sub-sample of 124 Latino adolescents, and 88 Asian adolescents. Results supported the role that ethnic identity has as a protective factor to health risk behaviors among some groups of adolescents. Ethnic identity and self-esteem were found to be positively correlated in this study. Furthermore, self-esteem was found to be a protective factor to engaging in health risk behaviors among those adolescents who were not Caucasian when compared with Caucasian adolescents. Finally, gender differences were found on the Affirmation and Belonging subscale of the MEIM in terms of health risk behaviors. Findings from this study have implications for designing preventive programs for adolescents from diverse backgrounds. Furthermore, these findings point to the importance of considering ethnic identity, ethnicity, and self-esteem in the prediction of health risk behaviors"--Leaves ii-iii.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the major theories of Black and White racial identity. Moreover, theoretical perspectives that were originally developed to describe social fomentation have been updated and expanded to explain the role of racial identity in counseling dyads, social relationships, and groups. Measures for assessing racial identity are described. Original research addresses the relationship of racial identity to other personality characteristics such as value orientations, decision-making styles and counseling process variables such as satisfaction, counselor strategies, and client reactions. Part 1 presents basic racial identity theory and measurement issues as they pertain to individuals and intergroup functioning. Ideally this material will be useful to persons who are seeking a basic introduction to Black and White racial identity theory. Part 2 introduces empirical attempts to examine the correlates of racial identity. This section is primarily intended for the reader who is interested in generating research questions and/or evaluating some of those that already have been generated. Part 3 includes speculative and empirical chapters that study the influence of racial identity on everyday interactions. This material also describes the influence of racial identity attitudes on various kinds of counseling interactions. The final chapter presents models for promoting identity development. This book should appeal to anyone interested in the social and behavioral sciences, including psychiatry, social work, and cross cultural psychology; nursing and education.
