Book Psychological Tests Applied to Factory Workers Classic Reprint

Download or read book Psychological Tests Applied to Factory Workers Classic Reprint written by Emily Thorp Burr and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-04 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Psychological Tests Applied to Factory Workers It is rather disconcerting that in the conduct of modern business the handling of the human element has received far less consideration than the development of machinery and the perfection of the materials used in industries. The history of industry shows a gradual increase in the specification of the material factors employed, but not until the last decade has the recognition of differences in the individual been considered. In the industrial magazines of former years a great deal more space is devoted to the study of the materials and machinery utilized than to the analysis of the employee and the appreciation of his needs and value. When selecting a machine, managers of industrial organizations are extremely careful to obtain one that is absolutely adapted to the specific work for which it is required, but although there is more variation in men than in machines, in the great majority of cases men are still selected by the most haphazard methods. It should be obvious that even though all factories producing a similar type of goods were to adopt the same kind of mechanical devices their output would vary tremendously because of the differences in the quality of the human labor employed. Until recently, neither the employer nor the employee gave much attention to the method of work. The employer interested himself first of all in the Output and the wages he was obliged to pay while the employee concerned himself but little with the matter of Output and a great deal with the matter of wages. The attitude of both toward the amount of energy that must be expended to bring forth results was similarly one of more or less indifference. There is consolation, however, in the fact that among progressive employers there are those who are becoming aware that the management and selection of employees is one of the most essential and at the same time one of the most complicated details with which they have to grapple. Unfortunately, few have known how to go about the curtailing of the waste which invariably results from chance selection and the large labor turnover which inevitably follows. Book Written Composition and Characteristics of Personality Classic Reprint

Download or read book Written Composition and Characteristics of Personality Classic Reprint written by Floyd H. Allport and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-10-01 with total page 94 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Written Composition and Characteristics of Personality Practical and essential as such a View of the teaching of writing may be at the present day, there is another aspect which ought not to be neglected. If we are to find the basic reasons for certain errors, if we are to discover the full potentialities for good writing which our classes afford, if we are to assure ourselves that the things which a student learns in the criticism of his daily themes will be carried over to his use of the language in general, we must study the writing process not merely as a cross - sectional evaluation of a group, but as a history of development in individuals. With out minimizing the practical necessity for uniform standards, and the social or vocational tests which a student must face throughout life, it is important to realize that this 'societal' requirement, which regards language as a tool for helping an individual to play a cer tain mile in social organization, is often, from the standpoint of the individual himself, a rather arbitrary affair. Though he feels that he must adapt himself to such standards, this cross-sectional View of training in writing is really one which is derived by cutting arbitrarily across the life stream (or developmental process) of a large number of individuals, each of whom differs from every other, not only in his pattern of traits and capacities, but in his manner of expression and his motivation. Until we come to regard students from a 'longitudinal' standpoint, in which each personality has a uniqueness of its own, we cannot fully understand how the mini mum essentials themselves are acquired, how certain characteristic faults may arise, or how they may be prevented; nor can we envis age the part which the student's language capacities may be able to play in his career and his social adjustments of the future. Book Psychological Testing in the Service of Disability Determination

Download or read book Psychological Testing in the Service of Disability Determination written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2015-06-29 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The United States Social Security Administration (SSA) administers two disability programs: Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI), for disabled individuals, and their dependent family members, who have worked and contributed to the Social Security trust funds, and Supplemental Security Income (SSSI), which is a means-tested program based on income and financial assets for adults aged 65 years or older and disabled adults and children. Both programs require that claimants have a disability and meet specific medical criteria in order to qualify for benefits. SSA establishes the presence of a medically-determined impairment in individuals with mental disorders other than intellectual disability through the use of standard diagnostic criteria, which include symptoms and signs. These impairments are established largely on reports of signs and symptoms of impairment and functional limitation. Psychological Testing in the Service of Disability Determination considers the use of psychological tests in evaluating disability claims submitted to the SSA. This report critically reviews selected psychological tests, including symptom validity tests, that could contribute to SSA disability determinations. The report discusses the possible uses of such tests and their contribution to disability determinations. Psychological Testing in the Service of Disability Determination discusses testing norms, qualifications for administration of tests, administration of tests, and reporting results. The recommendations of this report will help SSA improve the consistency and accuracy of disability determination in certain cases.

Book The Psychological Methods of Testing Intelligence Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Psychological Methods of Testing Intelligence Classic Reprint written by William Stern and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-27 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Psychological Methods of Testing Intelligence The Objection is Often made that the problem Of intellectual diagnosis can in no way be successfully dealt with until we have exact knowledge Of the gen eral nature Of intelligence itself. But this Objection does not seem to me pertinent. In science there is no such precise sequence Of the different research prob lems. We measure electro-motive force without knowing what electricity is, and we diagnose with very delicate test methods many diseases the real nature of which we know as yet very little. Indeed, it may be asserted, quite on the contrary, that prog ress in testing intelligence may Shed light from a new angle upon the theoretical study Of intelligence and thus supplement the psychology Of thinking in a valuable manner. If it turns out, for Instance, that certain symptoms are relevant and others irrelevant for the differentiation Of the intelligence shown by different persons; if, again, one series of these symp toms exhibit a high degree, another series a less de gree of intercorrelation, then our knowledge Of the structure Of intelligence must thereby be little by lit tle increased, and thus there will develop a fruitful reciprocity between the two phases Of investigation, theoretical and applied. Naturally, we cannot begin our work without a pre liminary definition Of intelligence, however pro visional it may be. And this definition must be neither too broad nor too narrow.
