Book excerpt: Commonly dismissed as mystical by scientists, archetypes were described by Jung as biological entities, which have evolved through natural selection, and which, if they exist at all, must be amenable to empirical study. Anthony Stevens has discovered the key to opening up this long-ignored scientific approach to the archetype.

Book excerpt: It all started as a movie script, so I set out to write a story no more than twenty pages long, yet soon enough twenty turned into forty, forty into eighty, eighty into more than one hundred, then two hundred, to finally quench perfection's thirst at almost the initial number of pages squared. It was quite a trip. But don't worry, it's shorter than it appears, the camera is many a time set in fast motion and the frames always point forward. So what is the novel about? About men and women, as almost everything in life. About what a story is and how it becomes one, about the ways the mirror and the photograph face one another to create one's persona. About how to draw the reader into a tale's painting by revealing layer upon layer of signification deeply embedded into our subconscious and how the characters lure them out of our mind's eye. About choices. Bad and worse choices. How sometimes a good one comes along and we might just steal some happiness. Or not. About being blind enough, or stubborn enough, to persist in following our lives' wrong film script irrespective of the 'No' signs we get to see along the way - and still do it while fully knowledgeable of our having seen them. I have to admit that my being constantly bewildered by it is what compelled me to write the novel. About unkindness and how it creeps inside of you, turning your dreamworld into a death world. How does that happen? How does the prince turn into the dragon? That's the essential red thread of the story. Red. Desire. Why not think of Desire as a Mirror? They do reflect us best, after all. If one were torn between two opposite yearnings it would be like he were placed in between two giant mirrors catching him in between while they echoed one another into nothingness. There are only so many mirrors-in-mirrors a pair of eyes can see. Some see better than others, yet eventually the mirrors' reciprocal reflections become too small for anybody to make out. That's when you get lost. When chances are the gazer's conscience will shred and fade away just as the mirrors did. Ever had somebody close to you got lost in such a maze and could not wake up from such a self-inflicted nightmare? Or perhaps first person singular applies even better - it is the 'I' who dreams reality as (s)he *sees* fit. The eye and the I. This phrase describes 'Glowing Archetypes' best. Glowing is about seeing and the archetypes about our innermost sense of identity - we are what we see and we see what we choose to be. Whenever our life's film is cut, we get to see the bubble/illusion we live in. Most times it's the only way to get to see it. Which is what the first scene is all about. About whether you can truly understand whatever you choose to call 'your' reality - and unavoidably end up believing that you can control it -or not. I believe you cannot. Eve (the She principle) seems to have no control at all, at first not understanding what is going on, then gradually 'getting it' - yet knowledge apparently doesn't bring more control. Adam (the He principle) believes he is in full control, but finally that's even further from the truth of Eve having non. The passers-by also believe they have it right, taking darkness for the light simply because it's easier, since the path of the least resistance governs most of one's actions more strongly than any other force. And finally us, the readers, the 'outside' passers-by, we'll also believe we 'get' it. It's what we do best. Assuming. Still non of the characters - the ones looking at the screen right now included - have it right. Otherwise it would be boring, of course. Yet how exactly these four broken perspectives intertwine and diverge successively, mirroring the ever flash chasing camera of the human soul in order to create something out of nothing - which is what growing as a person is a all about - braid themselves into a larger tree-trunk of self-knowledge is what the novel seeks to explore. The She, the He, their reflections and us.

Book Archetype of the Absolute

Download or read book Archetype of the Absolute written by Sanford L. Drob and published by . This book was released on 2017-06-15 with total page 510 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In "Archetype of the Absolute: The Union of Opposites in Mysticism, Philosophy and Psychology," Sanford Drob traces the "problem of the opposites" in the history of ideas and develops the thesis that apparent oppositions in philosophy, including those that underlie competing paradigms in psychology, are complementary rather than contradictory. The doctrine of the complementarity and union of opposites underlies the mysticism of the Tao and the Kabbalah, the dialectical thinking of Hegel, the psychology of C.G. Jung, and various interpretations of quantum physics, and it has been spoken of as the "master archetype." In this intellectual tour de force, Drob draws upon thinkers from Heraclitus to Jacques Derrida and Slajov Zižek, to resolve metaphysical and psychological puzzles and reconcile a wide range of oppositions, including those between determinism and free-will, realism and idealism, reason and imagination, and theism and atheism. Drob reveals the significance of the doctrine of the union of opposites in the Kabbalah and other mystical traditions, provides a deep examination of Hegel's dialectical efforts to overcome "contradiction," and fully explores C. G. Jung's notion that "the self" is a "coincidence of opposites." He shows that a full conceptual analysis of competing paradigms in psychological theory and practice reveals them to be complementary and interdependent. Concluding chapters consider the fundamental oppositions between sign and signified, subject and object, and identity and difference, and explore the possibility (and limits) of a "rational-mystical" ascent to the "Absolute."

Book Archetypes from Underground

Download or read book Archetypes from Underground written by Lonny Harrison and published by Wilfrid Laurier Univ. Press. This book was released on 2016-05-17 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Archetypes from Underground: Notes on the Dostoevskian Self uncovers archetypal imagery in Dostoevsky’s stories and novels and argues that archetypes bring a new dimension to our understanding and appreciation of his works. In this interdisciplinary study, Harrison analyzes selected texts in light of fresh research in Dostoevsky studies, cultural history, comparative mythology, and depth psychology. He argues that one of Dostoevsky's chief concerns is the crisis of modernity, and that he dramatizes the conflicts of the modern self by depicting the dynamic, transformative nature of the psyche. Harrison finds the language and imagery of archetypes in Dostoevsky’s characters, symbols, and themes, and shows how these resonate in remarkable ways with the archetypes of self, persona, and the shadow. He demonstrates that major themes in Dostoevsky coincide with Western esotericism, such as the complementarity of opposites, transformation, and the symbolism of death and resurrection. These arguments inform a close reading of several of Dostoevsky’s texts, including The Double, Notes from Underground, and The Brothers Karamazov. Archetypes inform these works and others, bringing vitality to Dostoevsky’s major characters and themes. This research represents a departure from the religious and philosophical questions that have dominated Dostoevsky studies. This work is the first sustained analysis of Dostoevsky’s work in light of archetypes, framing a topic that calls for further investigation. Archetypes illumine the author’s ideas about Russian national identity and its faith traditions and help us redefine our understanding of Russian realism and the prominent place Dostoevsky occupies within it.

Book A Jungian Study of Shakespeare

Download or read book A Jungian Study of Shakespeare written by M. Fike and published by Springer. This book was released on 2009-02-02 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Employing the analytical psychology of Carl Jung, Matthew A. Fike provides a fresh understanding of individuation in Shakespeare. This study of "the visionary mode" - Jung s term for literature that comes through the artist from the collective unconscious - combines a strong grounding in Jungian terminology and theory with myth criticism, biblical literary criticism, and postcolonial theory. Fike draws extensively on the rich discussions in the Collected Works of C. G. Jung to illuminate selected plays such as A Midsummer Night s Dream, The Merchant of Venice, The Henriad, Othello, and Hamlet in new and surprising ways. Fike s clear and thorough approach to Shakespeare offers exciting, original scholarship that will appeal to students and scholars alike.

Book Archetypal Ontology

  • Author : Jon Mills
  • Publisher : Taylor & Francis

Download or read book Archetypal Ontology written by Jon Mills and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-03-28 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this novel re-examination of the archetype construct, philosopher Jon Mills and psychiatrist Erik Goodwyn engage in spirited dialogue on the origins, nature, and scope of what archetypes actually constitute, their relation to the greater questions of psyche and worldhood, and their relevance for Jungian studies and analytical psychology today. Arguably the most definitive feature of Jung’s metapsychology is his theory of archetypes. It is the fulcrum on which his analytical depth psychology rests. With recent trends in post-Jungian and neo-Jungian perspectives that have embraced developmental, relational, social justice, and postmodern paradigms, classical archetype theory has largely become a drowning genre. Despite the archetypal school of James Hillman and his contemporaries, and the archetype debates that captured our attention over two decades ago, contemporary Jungians are preoccupied with the lived reality of the existential subject and the personal unconscious over the collective transpersonal forces derived from archaic ontology. Archetypal Ontology will be of interest to psychoanalysts, philosophers, transpersonal psychologists, cultural theorists, anthropologists, religious scholars, and scholars in many disciplines in the arts and humanities, analytical psychology, and post-Jungian studies.

Book Jungian Archetypal Psychology Made Easy

Download or read book Jungian Archetypal Psychology Made Easy written by Charles Bebeau and published by Author House. This book was released on 2004-08-03 with total page 105 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Does Jungian Psychology intrigue you, but you're not sure how to apply it to your life or therapeutic practice if you are a therapist? This book written by Theresa Bauer, LPC, CAC III and Elizabeth Cox, M.A. outlines theories and techniques developed by Charles Bebeau, Ph.D. of the Avalon Jungian Archetypal Institute in Boulder, Colorado. Dr. Bebeau developed his theory of the full maturation process of the individual through 12 archetypes and the alchemical process based on Carl lung's work. There are 24 color illustrations of the archetypes. Astrology is the oldest art practiced by ancient people, including the Hebrews. It was originally part of alchemy and studied extensively by Carl lung. Dr. Bebeau has refined this work and made it possibly to pick out your ruling archetypes using an astrological chart. We all have 4-5-6 ruling archetypes making us unique individuals. The last section of the book explains how to do this, but for the people who don't understand astrology or want to, it is possible to gain an understanding of the archetypes and alchemical process in the first 3 sections of the book. This book will help you gain an understanding of yourself and others.

Book Psychological Archetypal and Phenomenological Perspectives on Soccer

Download or read book Psychological Archetypal and Phenomenological Perspectives on Soccer written by David Huw Burston and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-08-13 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Soccer, or football, attracts vast numbers of passionate fans from all over the world; yet clinical psychology is yet to study it in depth. In this book, David Huw Burston, a consultant football psychology and performance coach, uses a phenomenological research method inspired by Amedeo Giorgi to consider what we can learn from the spirit of the game, and how this can be used positively in the consulting room and on the field of play. By examining detailed qualitative research with professional soccer players of both sexes, Burston identifies and considers nine particular themes, including the family, god, heroes and dreams, and discusses how what we can learn from the game of football and team culture can be applied to Jungian analysis today. This book bridges the gap between clinical psychology and sport, outlining potential shortfalls in current youth development in sport, as well as discussing how traditional Jungian archetypes can be identified in everyday settings. It will be of key interest to researchers from both the fields of analytical psychology and sports studies.

Book Jung s Self Psychology

    Book Details:
  • Author : Polly Y. Eisendrath
  • Publisher : Guilford Press
  • Release : 1991-05-03
  • ISBN : 9780898625530
  • Pages : 216 pages

Download or read book Jung s Self Psychology written by Polly Y. Eisendrath and published by Guilford Press. This book was released on 1991-05-03 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jung was fascinated by the problem of unity in the personality. If the personality is made up of multiple voices or affective-imaginal states, as he believed it was, then how does an individual achieve a core self? Jung concluded that a coherent and continuous self is the hard won achievement of consciousness, the product of a mature personality in the second half of life. His theory of the integration of multiple subjectivities into an individuating self' anticipates current trends in constructivism and developmental psychology. Jung did not systematize his own work, nor attempt to make accessible many of his most complex ideas about the self. This volume explores his self psychology, its meaning and its application within the context of other contemporary theories of subjectivity. To describe Jung's self psychology more fully in the light of contemporary theories, the authors introduce twelve other self theories in a comparative analysis of the clinical case of a midlife man in psychotherapy. From Kohut and Piaget to Lichtenberg and Loevinger, the authors compare Jung's theories with other clinical and developmental approaches. The book's final chapter offers cogent suggestions for future use of Jung's self psychology. Unique in its treatment and understanding of Jung's theories, this volume illuminates and simplifies many of his central ideas about the self. For Jungians, it provides a contemporary context in which to read and systematize his work. For professionals in the larger therapeutic and educational communities, it offers an up-to-date introduction to a provocative and imaginative body of work that is a central chapter of modern theories of subjectivity.

Book Four Eternal Women

  • Pages : 328 pages

Download or read book Four Eternal Women written by Mary Dian Molton and published by Fisher King Press. This book was released on 2011 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Toni Wolff was at first the patient, and later the friend, mistress for a time, long-term colleague and personal analyst of Swiss Psychiatrist Carl Jung. In addition to her work as the founder, leader and teacher for the Psychological Society in Z rich which led to the establishment of the world-renowned C.G. Jung Institute in Z rich/K snacht, she published a seminal but little known work called "Structural Forms of the Feminine Psyche" ("Der Psychologie," Berne, 1951). This treatise, certainly one of the first studies in Analytical Psychology, has been the subject of the authors' investigation, attention, research and study for the past twelve years. Toni Wolff's original outline of her four archetypes barely filled fifteen pages of the journal, and was written in the academic style of professional publications of that period, sans illustration or commentary. While Wolff's work has been mentioned in short form in the work of several writers, Four Eternal Women is the first full and serious archetypal delineation of her original thesis, and examines each of her four feminine archetypes from several perspectives: Wolff's Own Words; An Overview of History and Myth; Familiar Characteristics; Lesser-Known (Shadow) Possibilities; Career Inclinations; Relationships to Men; Relationships to Children; Relationships to Each of the Other Types; The tension of the opposites set up by Wolff's own diagrammatic representation of these archetypes provided an additional dynamic to this study. Those who have followed Jung's individuation path will recognize aspects of Jung's 'Transcendent Function.' All readers may well become personally sensitized to discover their own type preferences, and how some aspects of shadow may be present in their 'opposite' partner.

Book Awakening the Heroes Within

Download or read book Awakening the Heroes Within written by Carol S. Pearson and published by Harper Collins. This book was released on 1991-07-19 with total page 355 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The heroic quest is about saying 'yes' to yourself and in so doing, becoming more fully alive and more effective in the world. . . . The quest is replete with dangers and pitfalls, but it offers great rewards: the capacity to be successful in the world, knowledge of the mysteries of the human soul, and the opportunity to find and express your unique gifts in the world." In this bold and original work, Carol S. Pearson shows that the heroic quest isn't just for certain people under special circumstances. Exploring the many heroic paths available to each of us, at every point in our lives, her innovative program enables us to live heroically by activating and applying twelve archetypes in our lives. This companion to the bestselling The Hero Within outlines twelve archetypal patterns that can aid inner development and the quest for wholeness. These archetypes are inner guides that can help us prepare for the journey, by learning how to become successful members of society; embark upon the quest, by becoming initiated into the mysteries of the human soul; and return to transform our lives as a result of claiming our uniqueness and personal power. Writing for individuals seeking to realize their full potential and professionals engaged in empowering others, Pearson shows how journeys differ by the age, gender, and cultural background of the seeker, and how archetypes help awaken the capacities of our psyches. A unique diagnostic test, the Heroic Myth Index, and exercise are included to help us understand and awaken our inner guides.

Book The Seven Basic Plots

Download or read book The Seven Basic Plots written by Christopher Booker and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2005-11-11 with total page 737 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This remarkable and monumental book at last provides a comprehensive answer to the age-old riddle of whether there are only a small number of 'basic stories' in the world. Using a wealth of examples, from ancient myths and folk tales via the plays and novels of great literature to the popular movies and TV soap operas of today, it shows that there are seven archetypal themes which recur throughout every kind of storytelling. But this is only the prelude to an investigation into how and why we are 'programmed' to imagine stories in these ways, and how they relate to the inmost patterns of human psychology. Drawing on a vast array of examples, from Proust to detective stories, from the Marquis de Sade to E.T., Christopher Booker then leads us through the extraordinary changes in the nature of storytelling over the past 200 years, and why so many stories have 'lost the plot' by losing touch with their underlying archetypal purpose. Booker analyses why evolution has given us the need to tell stories and illustrates how storytelling has provided a uniquely revealing mirror to mankind's psychological development over the past 5000 years. This seminal book opens up in an entirely new way our understanding of the real purpose storytelling plays in our lives, and will be a talking point for years to come.
