Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From their location in the heart of Detroit, Michigan, the Weisfelds’ lab has reached out for thirty years to couples in long-term partnerships around the world. In living rooms of Detroit, London, Moscow, Beijing, and beyond, couples of all types and ages have shared their insights into adult romantic relationships. This book, The Psychology of Marriage, is a distillation of these findings, which have appeared in dozens of book chapters, journal articles, and conference presentations. The book also provides new systematic comparisons that offer insights into the mysteries of marriage and other committed relationships. Scholars, professional counselors, and family therapists will find a helpful framework for thinking about cultural similarities and differences in marital dynamics. Researchers will be introduced to a robust new instrument, the Marriage and Relationship Questionnaire (MARQ), which can be used in heterosexual and same-sex couples in virtually any cultural setting, along with ethical guidelines for conducting this research. Anyone who is interested in why committed relationships work (or do not work) will find the book filled with compelling new insights.

Book Beyond the Myth of Marital Happiness

Download or read book Beyond the Myth of Marital Happiness written by Blaine J. Fowers and published by Jossey-Bass. This book was released on 2000-09-18 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: According to psychologist Blaine Fowers, the myth of marital happiness-that good communication, emotional gratification, and intimacy result in a healthy relationship-has made marriages more fragile than ever before and we must let it go. Does this mean that we should give up on love, satisfaction, intimacy, emotional support, good communication, and good sex in marriage? That marriage must be continued solely on the basis of grim commitment? That no one should divorce? Not at all. Instead, Dr. Fowers shows how we can re-envision marriage as a wonderful opportunity to practice the virtues of friendship, loyalty, generosity, and justice in the shared pursuit of our deepest ideals.

It is an institution in which interpersonal relationships, usually intimate and sexual, are acknowledged in a variety of ways, depending on the culture or subculture in which it is found. People marry for many reasons including legal, social, emotional, economical, spiritual, and religious. These might include arranged marriages, family obligations, ' the legal establishment of a nuclear family unit, the legal protection of children and public declaration of love (Bawah, 2003). Man and woman pledge to procreate and up bring children and to live as a pair to the rest of their lives. Although the aforesaid seems to be an easy process, in reality it is much more than just complicated for many of the couples. In many of the cases what starts as groovy relationship burns away into splinters and ash. This is primarily due to lack of understanding and adjustment between the members. The present study

Book Retrospect and Prospect in the Psychological Study of Families

Download or read book Retrospect and Prospect in the Psychological Study of Families written by James P. McHale and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2001-10 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book assembles 11 of the leading thinkers and researchers in the field of family psychology to create a compendium summarizing both what psychology researchers have learned about the family and where the field should be going next. It evolved after the volume's contributors met with other distinguished family scholars to discuss family influences on child development and to ponder how this knowledge could be used to benefit families and children. This volume includes approaches to the family that feature multiple levels and topics of focal interest to benefit anyone interested in the family. Central topics include mothering, fathering, marriages, family group processes, sibling relations, and families as systems. In addition, three senior authors offer road maps to detect, and suggest (a) challenges in research on parenting, (b) marital and family dynamics, and (c) family systems in the years ahead. In keeping with the theme of how research affects the lives of families outside the university lab settings, this volume includes a chapter on the interface between family research and law. This book closes with a "big picture" analysis and critique of what is known and not known. Psychologists, anthropologists, sociologists, and public policymakers interested in the family should especially find this volume of interest.

Book Marital Happiness and Sexual Behaviors of Older Adults

Download or read book Marital Happiness and Sexual Behaviors of Older Adults written by Brynn Thompson and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The quality of a marriage or partnership can have a substantial impact on many areas of life. A good working relationship can be a significant resource for coping with difficult life situations and stress and may contribute to partners' emotional and psychological well-being and healthy lifestyle. However, marital quality among older adults is often overlooked in favor of studying younger couples. This study examines the relationship between marital happiness and sexual satisfaction, as well as other contributing factors, in the lives of older American adults. Data from a restricted sample (N=1278) from the second wave of the National Social Life, Health and Aging Project was analyzed. Regression models were used to examine associations with marital happiness. Within OLS regression gender, education level, mental health, self-rated happiness, absence of sexual quality, physical satisfaction, and emotional satisfaction were each statistically significant. Females reported higher marital satisfaction than males. Higher educated individuals expressed less satisfaction within their marriages than those with less formal education. Those that rated their mental health, happiness, and physical and emotional satisfaction high also reported higher marital satisfaction. Participants that reported an absence of sexual quality generally rated their marital satisfaction lower. As an absence of quality sex and physical satisfaction were significantly associated with marital satisfaction in this study, it may be interesting to look further into factors that influence the quality of sex within the older adult population and what may be done to generate positive changes for the future.
