Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Psychic Investigators examines British anthropology's engagement with the modern spiritualist movement during the late Victorian era. Efram Sera-Shriar argues that debates over the existence of ghosts and psychical powers were at the center of anthropological discussions on human beliefs. He focuses on the importance of establishing credible witnesses of spirit and psychic phenomena in the writings of anthropologists such as Alfred Russel Wallace, Edward Burnett Tylor, Andrew Lang, and Edward Clodd. The book draws on major themes, such as the historical relationship between science and religion, the history of scientific observation, and the emergence of the subfield of anthropology of religion in the second half of the nineteenth century. For secularists such as Tylor and Clodd, spiritualism posed a major obstacle in establishing the legitimacy of the theory of animism: a core theoretical principle of anthropology founded in the belief of "primitive cultures" that spirits animated the world, and that this belief represented the foundation of all religious paradigms. What becomes clear through this nuanced examination of Victorian anthropology is that arguments involving spirits or psychic forces usually revolved around issues of evidence, or lack of it, rather than faith or beliefs or disbeliefs.

Book Psychic Sleuths

Book excerpt: Do psychics have special powers, allowing them to succeed where ordinary police work fails? How often do the police actually enlist psychics in solving crimes, and what do they really think of these paranormal "experts"? These are just some of the questions discussed in this illuminating study of those who supposedly use extrasensory powers to help solve crimes. Famed paranormal investigator Joe Nickell assembled a psychic "task force" of experienced researchers - investigative writers, professional magicians, private detectives, and paranormal investigators - and challenged them to examine the claims of a famous paranormal crimebuster. Among the "psychic sleuths" examined are Greta Alexander, Dorothy Allison, Gerard Croiset, Peter Hurkos, Phil Jordan, Rosemarie Kerr, Noreen Reiner, and Bill Ward. Noted psychologist James E. Alcock offers an assessment of the psychics' claims in light of the investigative reports. Nickell's distinguished team of investigators includes Michael R. Dennett, Professor Kenneth Feder, Henry Gordon, Jim Lippard, Ward Lucas, Professor Michael Park, Stephen Peterson, Dr. Gary Posner, and Professor Lee Roger Taylor. Psychic Sleuths will excite the curiosity of both skeptics and believers, and all who are puzzled by psychic claims and paranormal mysteries.

Book Travels with My Father

Download or read book Travels with My Father written by Nancy Myer and published by Paladin Communications. This book was released on 2013-12-02 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this moving spiritual memoir, one of America's most important psychic investigators, Nancy Myer, recalls her evolution as a person with psychic abilities, her struggle to accept the intuitive gifts she was given, and her desire to lead a “normal” life raising three energetic children. But when the highest-ranking official in the Delaware State Police asks her to use her psychic gifts to help solve murder cases, her normal life is turned upside-down, beginning an unorthodox career in which she is forced to deal with “the worst of humanity.” In her numerous consultations with law enforcement, she receives guidance and support from the ghost of her father, who had also possessed some intuitive abilities. His passing and return visits from "the other side" are what unlocks her true nature and extraordinary gifts. Part love story and part mystery, with vivid descriptions of some of her toughest criminal cases, she explores some of the most profound questions of the universe: What is our purpose here on earth? What happens at the end of a lifetime? and Where does the soul go? As Nancy reveals in the remarkable story of her relationship with her father, before his death and after, the end isn’t really an end at all, but merely a transition to new worlds.

Spirits, hauntings, ghosts, demons—some believe in them, some don’t. Some have even experienced them, some have safeguarded themselves with science. But whichever category you may fall into, one thing is certain—none of us fully understand the concept. Shishir Kumar, founder president and lead investigator of Team Pentacle, India’s most sought-after paranormal research organization, brings to you a handbook with the key to sense, recognize, grasp and accept the unknown. Departing from the tradition of myths and chants, this book intelligently humanizes the concept and arms the reader with the requisite knowledge to unravel sounds and shadows which seem to have no source. It utilizes New Age tools like Electronic Voice Phenomena and digital cameras for identifying and resolving spirit possessions and familiar sources like Ouija boards for communicating with them. The author provides a comprehensive, engaging and easy-to-follow guidebook for quenching those chills we are all too familiar with but so far have been unequipped to deal with. The book bridges the gap between the human and the ethereal which helps in driving out the fear, and brings into focus the need to act confidently and fearlessly.
