Book Psychiatric Studies of Delinquents

Download or read book Psychiatric Studies of Delinquents written by Walter L. Treadway and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-08-18 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Psychiatric Studies of Delinquents: In Five Parts This series of articles presents the findings of three studies of the physical, mental, and social conditions of certain groups of women and girls who, during the war, were quarantined under health laws because of venereal infection, or, if detained upon a State charge, were found to be thus infected. Part I, concerning delinquents in the extra-cantonment zone of Fort Leavenworth, Kans., was prepared by an officer of the Division of Scientific Research, United States Public Health Service. The study in Part II of a smaller group in Louisville, Ky., was made Imder authority of the special act of Congress, July 9, 1918, which created a division of venereal diseases in the United States Public Health Service and included among the duties of that division the study, and investigation of causes, treatment, and prevention of venereal diseases. Part III represents the cooperation from the Children's Bureau of the Department of Labor, in a sociological interpretation of data of the Kansas investigation, especially data regarding the younger delinquents of the group. Part IV, the material of which is taken immediately from the Kansas investigation, draws also upon the experience of the United States Public Health Service for the important principle which is its thesis, namely, that the resources of psychiatry must be more widely drawn upon, and this in earliest years of childhood, to find and to correct tendencies in a child's behavior which promise to crystallize into antisocial habits and conduct. Book Prospective Studies of Crime and Delinquency

Download or read book Prospective Studies of Crime and Delinquency written by K.T. van Dusen and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1983-07-31 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Katherine Teilmann Van Dusen and Sarnoff A. Mednick This introduction delineates what we consider to be three of the most important impediments to the advance of knowledge in the field of criminology. The most fundamental need is for more studies of the nature and progress of criminal and delinquent careers. The second need is for more prospective, longitudinal studies of the etiology of crime and delinquency. The third need concerns the lack of interdisciplinary research toward a more integrated understanding of delinquent and criminal behavior. Criminal and Delinquent Careers The birth cohort study by Wolfgang, Figlio and Sellin (1972) was heralded by many (Farrington, 1973; Erickson, 1973; Weis, 1974) as a landmark which allowed researchers to study the course of delinquency without the usual sampling biases that plagued other, cross-sectional research. For the first time, we could get a reasonable picture of when delinquency usually starts, what proportion of the population engages in delinquency, what types of delinquencies they engage in, what proportion continue, and so on. Cross sectional studies do not permit the investigation of careers because cross 1 PROSPECTIVE STUDIES OF CRIME AND DELINQUENCY 2 sectional sampling includes only portions of careers for many of the individuals sampled. This is just one of the many problems that restricted researchers' ability to study the nature of criminal careers.

Book Juvenile Crime Juvenile Justice

  • Author : Institute of Medicine
  • Publisher : National Academies Press
  • Release : 2001-06-05
  • ISBN : 0309172357
  • Pages : 405 pages

Download or read book Juvenile Crime Juvenile Justice written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2001-06-05 with total page 405 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Even though youth crime rates have fallen since the mid-1990s, public fear and political rhetoric over the issue have heightened. The Columbine shootings and other sensational incidents add to the furor. Often overlooked are the underlying problems of child poverty, social disadvantage, and the pitfalls inherent to adolescent decisionmaking that contribute to youth crime. From a policy standpoint, adolescent offenders are caught in the crossfire between nurturance of youth and punishment of criminals, between rehabilitation and "get tough" pronouncements. In the midst of this emotional debate, the National Research Council's Panel on Juvenile Crime steps forward with an authoritative review of the best available data and analysis. Juvenile Crime, Juvenile Justice presents recommendations for addressing the many aspects of America's youth crime problem. This timely release discusses patterns and trends in crimes by children and adolescentsâ€"trends revealed by arrest data, victim reports, and other sources; youth crime within general crime; and race and sex disparities. The book explores desistanceâ€"the probability that delinquency or criminal activities decrease with ageâ€"and evaluates different approaches to predicting future crime rates. Why do young people turn to delinquency? Juvenile Crime, Juvenile Justice presents what we know and what we urgently need to find out about contributing factors, ranging from prenatal care, differences in temperament, and family influences to the role of peer relationships, the impact of the school policies toward delinquency, and the broader influences of the neighborhood and community. Equally important, this book examines a range of solutions: Prevention and intervention efforts directed to individuals, peer groups, and families, as well as day care-, school- and community-based initiatives. Intervention within the juvenile justice system. Role of the police. Processing and detention of youth offenders. Transferring youths to the adult judicial system. Residential placement of juveniles. The book includes background on the American juvenile court system, useful comparisons with the juvenile justice systems of other nations, and other important information for assessing this problem.
