Book excerpt: We review the physics of purely leptonic decays of $\pi^\pm$, $K^\pm$, $D^{\pm}$, $D_s^\pm$, and $B^\pm$ pseudoscalar mesons. The measured decay rates are related to the product of the relevant weak-interaction-based CKM matrix element of the constituent quarks and a strong interaction parameter related to the overlap of the quark and antiquark wave-functions in the meson, called the decay constant $f_P$. The leptonic decay constants for $\pi^\pm$, $K^\pm$, $D^{\pm}$, $D_s^\pm$, and $B^\pm$ mesons can be obtained with controlled theoretical uncertainties and high precision from {\it ab initio} lattice-QCD simulations. The combination of experimental leptonic decay-rate measurements and theoretical decay-constant calculations enables the determination of several elements of the CKM matrix within the standard model. These determinations are competitive with those obtained from semileptonic decays, and also complementary because they are sensitive to different quark flavor-changing currents. They can also be used to test the unitarity of the first and second rows of the CKM matrix. Conversely, taking the CKM elements predicted by unitarity, one can infer "experimental" values for $f_P$ that can be compared with theory. These provide tests of lattice-QCD methods, provided new-physics contributions to leptonic decays are negligible at the current level of precision. This review is the basis of the article in the Particle Data Group's 2016 edition, updating the versions in Refs. [1-3].

We exploit this symmetry to obtain model independent predictions for the fourteen form factors in weak decays from the ground state pseudoscalar meson P(sub)Q(sub)i of a heavy quark Q(sub)i to the low-lying positive parity excited states of a heavy quark Q(sub)j in terms of two universal functions of momentum transfer. These predictions are of interest in the study of B -> D*(sub)2(2460), D(sub)1(~2460), D(sub)1(2420), and D*(sub)0(~2420) semileptonic decays. We also discuss the connection between these results and the slope of the function Xi (which determines the B->D and B->D* transition form factors) given by a heavy quark sum rule suggested by Bjorken.

Book excerpt: The MARK III Collaboration recently completed the analysis of a number of decay modes of charged and neutral D mesons produced in electron-positron collisions near the peak of the psi(3770) resonance at SLAC's SPEAR storage ring. The mesons were produced nearly at rest in pairs, either DD− or D° anti D°, at a center-of-mass energy below the threshold for DD production. The unique kinematics of the production allow us to isolate the charmed meson signal clearly and unambiguously. The data were collected with the MARK III Spectrometer, a large solid angle magnetic detector. Our data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of approximately 9.3 inverse picobarns. New results will be presented on the absolute branching ratios of D mesons into hadronic final states, branching ratios for three body decays via pseudoscalar-vector intermediate states, and branching ratios for Cabibbo allowed and Cabibbo suppressed decays. Inclusive and exclusive branching ratios for the semi-leptonic decays of D mesons will be presented, as well as the first measurement of the vector form factor in the decay D° .-->. K−e, nu, evidence for interference in D+ decays, and new information on the contributions of W exchange diagrams to D° decays.

Book excerpt: Using a sample of 1.85 million DD¯ mesons collected at the Psi(3770) with the CLEO-c detector, and a reconstruction method based on the full event hermeticity, we measure branching fractions and branching fraction ratios for the four exclusive semileptonic decay modes D 0 → pi-e +nu, D0 → K -e+nu, D + → pi0e+nu and, D+ → K¯0 e+nu. For the branching fractions we find B (D0 → pi- e+nu) = 0.299 +/- 0.011 +/- 0.008%, B (D0 → K -e+nu) = 3.55 +/- 0.03 +/- 0.08%, B (D+ → pi0 e+nu) = 0.371 +/- 0.022 +/- 0.013% and B (D+ → K¯ 0e+nu) = 8.53 +/- 0.13 +/- 0.22%. The ratios are found to be B (D0 → pi- e+nu)/ B (D0 → K -e+nu) = 0.084 +/- 0.003 +/- 0.001, B (D+ → pi0 e+nu)/ B (D+ → K¯0 e+nu) = 0.044 +/- 0.003 +/- 0.001, Gamma( D0 → pi-e +nu)/Gamma(D+ → pi 0e+nu) = 2.04 +/- 0.14 +/- 0.08 and Gamma(D0 → K -e+nu)/Gamma(D + → K0e +nu) = 1.06 +/- 0.02 +/- 0.03. In addition, form factors are studied through fits to the partial branching fractions obtained in five q2 ranges. Combining our results with recent unquenched lattice calculations we extract the CKM matrix elements |Vcs | and |Vcd|. Averaging over isospin conjugate modes, we find |Vcs| = 1.01 +/- 0.01 +/- 0.01 +/- 0.11 and |Vcd| = 0.217 +/- 0.010 +/- 0.004 +/- 0.023.
