Book excerpt: Observations of heavy ion interactions at the highest available accelerator energies provide essential information for the analysis and interpretation of cosmic ray interactions. We report on an experiment in which emulsion chamber detectors were exposed to beams of 200A GeV 32S ions at the CERN SPS. We present statistical features of pseudorapidity distributions from central collisions in the experimental sample and compare them with the predictions from the Lund Model (FRITIOF) which contains only conventional physics. 8 refs., 3 figs.

Book excerpt: Factorial cumulant moments are used to analyze pseudorapidity fluctuations in A-A interactions. Only the second cumulant moments are significantly non-zero for central event samples, which implies that the higher order scaled factorial moments for the central data provide little information in addition to that from the second moments. The slopes of the cumulant plots are found to be inversely proportional to [eta] density for a variety of beam/target/energy combinations. We also present results on 2-D scaled factorial moments and the 2-particle correlations for central S+Au interactions.

Book excerpt: Whether or not adequate energy densities for a transition to the Quark-Gluon Plasma (QGP) phase are possible in 16O and 32S induced reactions is still an open question. Before unambiguous signals can be identified it is necessary to understand the background upon which the expected QGP signatures can be sought. An important aim of early experiments in this new energy density regime is thus to understand the process of hadronization in a nuclear environment. In any discussion of high energy nucleus-nucleus collisions formation time is an important feature. If, for example, the final state particles are produced instantaneously in a bound hadron-nucleon collision, all these particles will have a chance to reinteract inside the nuclear medium. If, on the other hand, the formation time is long, i.e., longer than the nuclear diameter, the energy flux will stay together as a unit throughout its passage through the target nucleus. While these extreme cases are clearly unrealistic, one expects interaction parameters such as the multiplicity and pseudorapidity distributions to be sensitive functions of the formation time. Here we present results on charged hadron production in an experiment using tracking detectors with the highest possible spatial resolution: emulsion chambers. A sample of the most central collisions will be compared to the predictions of the Lund Model, which does an accurate job of representing conventional physics in nuclear collisions. We can use the high resolution of our detectors to examine spatial correlations in several ways. In particular, the radial size of the particle formation region can be estimated using pion interferometry techniques. 12 refs., 3 figs.

After the introductory chapter on quantum chromodynamics, basic properties of atomic nuclei, sources of relativistic nuclei, and typical detector set-ups are described in three subsequent chapters. Experimental facts on collisions of relativistic heavy ions are systematically presented in 15 consecutive chapters, starting from the simplest features like cross sections, multiplicities, and spectra of secondary particles and going to more involved characteristics like correlations, various relatively rare processes, and newly discovered features: collective flow, high pT suppression and jet quenching. Some entirely new topics are included, such as the difference between neutron and proton radii in nuclei, heavy hypernuclei, and electromagnetic effects on secondary particle spectra.Phenomenological approaches and related simple models are discussed in parallel with the presentation of experimental data. Near the end of the book, recent ideas about the new state of matter created in collisions of ultrarelativistic nuclei are discussed. In the final chapter, some predictions are given for nuclear collisions in the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), now in construction at the site of the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN), Geneva. Finally, the appendix gives us basic notions of relativistic kinematics, and lists the main international conferences related to this field. A concise reference book on physics of relativistic heavy ions, it shows the present status of this field.

This has detoured our attention from the great enigmas posed by the dynamics and collective behavior of strongly interacting particles. Discovered more than 30 years ago, the thermal nature of the hadronic particle spectra has stimulated considerable theoretical effort, which so far has failed to 'confirm' on the basis of microscopic interactions the origins of this phenomenon. However, a highly successful Statistical Bootstrap Model was developed by Rolf Hagedorn at CERN about 30 years ago, which has led us to consider the 'boiling hadronic matter' as a transient state in the trans formation of hadronic particles into their melted form which we call Quark-GIuon-Plasma (QGP). Today, we return to seek detailed understanding of the thermalization processes of hadronic matter, equipped on the theoretical side with the knowledge of the fundamental strong interaction theory, the quantum chromo-dynamics (QCD), and recognizing the im portant role of the complex QCD-vacuum structure. On the other side, we have developed new experimental tools in the form of nuclear relativistic beams, which allow to create rather extended regions in space-time of Hot Hadronic Matter. The confluence of these new and recent developments in theory and experiment led us to gather together from June 27 to July 1, 1994, at the Grand Hotel in Divonne-Ies-Bains, France, to discuss and expose the open questions and issues in our field.
