Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mokashi is a Marathi novelist of the post-independence generation of "Realists." This is a vivid account of his day-by-day experience on the Warkari pilgrimage from Alandi to Pandharpur on foot. Pilgrimage is one of the most visible and pervasive features of Hinduism. Every year the Warkaris carry palanquins, called palkhis, bearing sandals representing the feet of their saints from various towns to Pandharpur in Maharashtra—to the Temple of Vitoba. Mokashi accompanied the oldest and most revered of the palanquin processions, the palkhi of Jnaneshwar Maharaj, on its two-week journey. His account is the only sustained view of the pilgrimage in any language.

Book Psalms of Maratha Saints

Download or read book Psalms of Maratha Saints written by Nicol MacNicol and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-04 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Psalms of Maratha Saints: One Hundred and Eight Hymns Translated From the Marathi This collection contains translations of one hundred and eight poems by some of the chief Vaisnavite poets of the Maratha country. The number seemed not inappropriate in view of the fact that there are one hundred and eight tulsi beads on the rosary worn by the Vaisnavite devotee. Almost every one of these poems is a prayer, a cry of the saint to the god of his worship. It has not been an easy matter to decide which poems should be selected for translation. Some have been chosen because they have a place in the regular worship of the devotees, as repeated daily by the V rkaris or adherents of the Pandharpur sect or sung in their bhajans or song services. But it was not easy to make a selection from so immense a body of literature as these poets have produced. I accordingly applied to Sir R. G. Bhandarkar with a request that he would assist me in making a choice, and he most kindly responded by furnishing me with a list of fifty abha gs of Tuk r m from those which he uses for his daily and weekly religious exercises. To anyone who knows Sir Ramkrishna Bhandarkar as not only a great Oriental scholar but the outstanding representative in India to-day of the ancient school of bhakti, the fact that these psalms minister nourishment to a spiritual life so beautiful and so sincere is in itself sufficient testimony to their religious value. For him, as for these saints, the life of the spirit is the only life livable, and fellowship with God its purpose and its goal. Book Mythologies and Philosophies of Salvation in the Theistic Traditions of India

Download or read book Mythologies and Philosophies of Salvation in the Theistic Traditions of India written by Klaus K. Klostermaier and published by Wilfrid Laurier Univ. Press. This book was released on 2006-01-01 with total page 569 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on exhaustive reference to primary source material, this volume explores the relationships between religious mythologies and religious philosophical system within the theistic traditions in India. Not content merely to explore these relationships, the author further examines the relevance of mythology and philosophy in a discussion of salvation—salvation understood in its sociological, eschatological, and philosophical senses. The treatment of myth and philosophy is comprehensive in scope, pulling together a great variety of sources and commentary, and illuminating them for the Western reader. This study will be of interest both to students of Indian religions and to students of comparative religion interested in creating a context for the discussion of Eastern and Western religions.

Book Have This Mind

  • Author : James E. Royster
  • Publisher : Balboa Press
  • Release : 2014-04-18

Download or read book Have This Mind written by James E. Royster and published by Balboa Press. This book was released on 2014-04-18 with total page 588 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Have This Mind uses a rational, logical, and systematic approach to spirituality, religion, and God by focusing on the mind or consciousness rather than doctrine, ritual, etc. It provides a model that resolves the many seemingly conflicting views of religion and God. The four largest religions of the world, Hinduism, Buddhism, Christianity, and Islam, are introduced in terms of their transformative dimensions that lead to an inclusive and eminently happy life. These principles and practices are illustrated with biographies of exemplary saints and sages from the traditions. Have This Mind outlines three different ways of being religious-regardless of one’s particular religious tradition-based on a progressively maturing mind. Of particular import to Christian readers are interpretations of biblical and theological views that facilitate transition from a traditional and mythic outlook tending toward exclusivism to one that is rational, transrational, and inclusive. On the basis of an appreciative and inclusive view of the world’s great religions, one discovers how these religions can actually enhance one’s own spirituality and religious outlook. A perspective central to Have This Mind is that authentic religion and spirituality lie in the loving quality of one’s life and not simply the ideas or beliefs held in one’s mind

Book Speaking Of Basava

Download or read book Speaking Of Basava written by K. Ishwaran and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-06-04 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The bulk of the literature on Basava and Lingayatism incorporates both the Brahman and Bhakti movements. To do this is to lose sight of innovations that Basava introduced in reaction to his Brahman-dominated environment. Also, to look at Lingayatism as a direct linear descendant of the Hindu tradition is to ignore the revolutionary thrust of Lingayatism in its origin in the twelfth century A.O. and its continuing dynamism in the subsequent centuries.

Book excerpt: Hinduism and Islam are usually considered to be poles apart, especially on religious grounds. But in this work, the author has endeavored to demonstrate that in spite of sharp differences between them, they met on religious, commercial, intellectual and political levels both in and outside of India. Although orthodox Hinduism and orthodox Islam could hardly reconcile, it is shown here that they were bound to accommodate each other. However, the real fusion took place with the coming to India of a host of Sufis; especially the lives and conduct of the left wing mystics of both religions made the two peoples to come closer through Bhakti mysticism. Of the many Bhakta-Mystics who strove in this direction, Dr. Hedayetullah made a special study of kabir (d. 1518) who dedicated his whole life to the achievement of Hindu-Muslim unity on socio-religious levels. So far Kabir has not only been denied his rightful credit as an apostle of Hindu-Muslim unity, but he has also been misunderstood by many. In the present work, he is shown to have gained the place of honor between the two religions as a mediator and a harmonizer. His efforts were crowned with success-the resultant Indo-Islamic culture and civilization is a living proof.
