Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The reception of early Jewish/Israelite texts in early Christianity provides valuable insights into the hermeneutics of ancient authors and studies in this regard are vital for an understanding of their theology/ies. By focusing particularly on the reception of the Psalms through the hand of the unknown author of Hebrews, Old Testament and New Testament scholars combine forces in this collection to determine the shifts in interpretation of the Psalms that took place during the processes of (re)interpretation within the work of a particular early Christian writer. By paying careful attention to the original reading(s) of the text versions utilized as well as to the manner in which those texts were embedded in a later literary context by the author of Hebrews, they provide a window into the trajectories of the Psalm traditions. A contextual contribution illustrates the versification of the Psalms in a contemporary African language, Afrikaans, to illustrate how the Psalms' reception remains a vivid endeavor in current times.

Book The Shape and Message of Book III Psalms 73 89

Download or read book The Shape and Message of Book III Psalms 73 89 written by Robert L. Cole and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2000-03-01 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study of Book III of the Psalter examines evidence for the canonical organization of these seventeen psalms and finds cohesive links that create a consistent and coherent dialogue throughout. Continual laments by a righteous individual on behalf of and in concert with the nation spring from the non-fulfilment of hopes raised in Psalm 72 at the end of Book II. Divine answers give reasons for the continuing desolation but assure the eventual establishment of a kingdom without specifying its time. Book III ends as it began, asking how long God's wrath will smoulder, and in response Book IV opens with Psalm 90 contrasting human and divine perspectives on time.

Book A Hebrew Reader for the Psalms

Download or read book A Hebrew Reader for the Psalms written by Peter Myers and published by . This book was released on 2021-08 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Hebrew Reader for the Psalms 40 Beloved TextsCompiled and edited by Pete Myers and Jonathan G. Kline A Hebrew Reader for the Psalms is a unique devotional and language-reference work that will help readers better understand the psalms of the Hebrew Bible as they were originally written. This book constitutes a carefully curated collection of forty Hebrew psalms, organized by genre and, within each genre, by difficulty. The psalms are presented in a unique and innovative format designed to help readers understand not only the meaning of the individual words but also how these words fit together to create clauses and sentences. Like A Proverb a Day in Biblical Hebrew, this book is designed to be enjoyed by people of varying levels of Hebrew ability--ranging from those who have studied the language for a year to those who have a PhD in Hebrew Bible. The book functions as a language-learning tool and a devotional, and is therefore a resource that readers will want to use repeatedly (rather than simply reading through it once). The book's strengths include the timeless draw of its contents, its accessibility, its simplicity of use, its minimalist aesthetic design, and its affordability. About the Authors Pete Myers (PhD, University of Cambridge) is Lecturer in Old Testament and Biblical Languages at the Ethiopian Graduate School of Theology, in Addis Ababa. He has published on linguistics and text criticism in various academic journals and edited volumes, and he serves as editor-in-chief of The Ethiopian Journal of Theology. Myers is an ordained presbyter (priest) in the Church of England and has ministered in a variety of capacities in England and in Ethiopia. Jonathan G. Kline (PhD, Harvard University) is the author of A Proverb a Day in Biblical Hebrew, Allusive Soundplay in the Hebrew Bible, and the five volumes of the Two Minutes a Day Biblical Language Series, as well as co-author of Biblical Aramaic: A Reader & Handbook. He currently serves as senior editor at Hendrickson Publishers. May-

Book Psalm 110 and the Logic of Hebrews

Download or read book Psalm 110 and the Logic of Hebrews written by Jared Compton and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2015-08-27 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A neglected area of study of the letter to the Hebrews is the function of the Old Testament in the letter's logic. Compton addresses this neglect by looking at two other ideas that have themselves received too little attention, namely (1) the unique and fundamental semantic contribution of Hebrews' exposition (vis-à-vis its exhortation) and (2) the prominence of Ps 110 in the author's exposition. The conclusion becomes clear that Hebrews' exposition-its theological argument-turns, in large part, on successive inferences drawn from Ps 110:1 and 4. Compton observes that the author uses the text in the first part of his exposition to (1) interpret Jesus' resurrection as his messianic enthronement, (2) connect Jesus' enthronement with his fulfillment of Ps 8's vision for humanity and, thus, (3) begin to explain why Jesus was enthroned through suffering. In the second and third parts of his exposition, the author uses the text to corroborate the narrative initially sketched. Thus, he uses the text to (1) show that messiah was expected to be a superior priest and, moreover, (2) show that this messianic priest was expected to solve the human problem through death.

Book Psalms

  • Author : James Luther Mays
  • Publisher : Westminster John Knox Press
  • Release : 2011-01-01
  • ISBN : 0664234399
  • Pages : 477 pages

Download or read book Psalms written by James Luther Mays and published by Westminster John Knox Press. This book was released on 2011-01-01 with total page 477 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Psalms have a double identity. They are scripture and liturgy. They compose a book of the Bible and are found in our hymnals and books of worship and prayer. When we think of them in historical perspective, another identity emerges. They are the liturgical poetry of ancient Israel, texts with a history of composition and use before they became scripture. A commentary in this Interpretation series needs to keep all three identities in view. That puts some strain on the commentator's task. The attempt to interpret the Psalms in awareness of the depth in their identity explains some things about the commentary and its writing. - Preface.
