Robert Scholten does this through vivid word pictures and clarity of writing that touch hearts and minds. Roberts passion and compassion for veterans and families struggling with PTSD opens new avenues of understanding for a very misunderstood reality of life. Robert survived Vietnam without a scratch as a gunner on a Duster attached to the 173rd Infantry Airborne. However, he was unaware of an internal wound. He left Vietnam, but Vietnam never left him. His journey through PTSD will amaze you. Robert buried everything negative about Vietnam. He never talked about the bloodshed. It was imprisoned under lock and key deep in his soul, never to see the light of day. Nearly forty years after his tour of Vietnam, Robert fell prey to PTSD. In November of 2007, Robert was admitted into the Lexington, Kentucky, VAs six-week, clinical, in-house PTSD rehabilitation program. He remains under their care. Up from that experience, and through the years since, he has felt compelled to bear his soul in hopes of assisting other PTSD sufferers, and those who care about them.

Book Biblical Cures for the Wounded Spirit

Download or read book Biblical Cures for the Wounded Spirit written by Wayne A. Keast and published by Dorrance Publishing. This book was released on 2023-05-05 with total page 199 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: About the Book Biblical Cures for the Wounded Spirit contains vital information that will answer many questions that those who suffer with PTSD and those close to them are asking. How does someone handle the grief experienced in combat? How does a spouse or other loved one handle the playing out of stress a combat veteran manifests when they return? Fear, guilt, no peace, and other issues are addressed. These are emotions that stir the soul and plague those who have experienced unimaginable trauma in a war zone or even in a violent home situation. Psychology and drugs are not the answer. New Age philosophy will not help. The Bible has the answers and will be found in these pages to be the solution that so many have been looking for. About the Author Saved at age 14 out of a broken, traumatizing home, Wayne A. Keast entered the Army at age 18 and discovered God’s peace in the midst of Army duty that includes deployment, and long stretches away from family. After years as an enlisted soldier, Wayne was called by God into the ministry out of German guard tour on a midnight shift. Finishing college and seminary, the Army received Wayne back as a commissioned officer and chaplain. After a deployment and after surgery, Wayne was in a rehab learning about war-time PTSD issues by listening to soldiers. After much bible study, Wayne learned of God’s cure for PTSD and how the inevitable wound can be treated successfully. Later, God showed Wayne a Bible verse that describes the issue. Proverbs 18:14 “The spirit of a man will sustain his infirmity, but a wounded spirit who can bear?” Wayne retired from the Army in 2012 with a burden for those with PTSD. This book is a compilation of the work completed in his Doctor of Ministry. Wounded Spirits is Wayne’s ministry order under Wounded Spirits INC. [email protected] www.biblecuresforptsd.org

Book The Language of Trauma in the Psalms

Download or read book The Language of Trauma in the Psalms written by Danilo Verde and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2024-09-03 with total page 171 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the last few decades, the field of trauma studies has shed new light on biblical texts that deal with individual and collective catastrophe. In The Language of Trauma in the Psalms, Danilo Verde advances the conversation, moving beyond the emphasis on healing that prevails in most literary trauma studies. Using the lens of cognitive linguistics and combining insights from trauma studies and redaction criticism, Verde explores how trauma is expressed linguistically in the book of Psalms, how trauma-related language was rooted in ancient Israel’s external realities, and how psalms helped define Yehud’s cultural trauma in the Persian period (539–331 BCE). Rather than assuming the psalmists’ personal experiences are reflected in these texts, Verde focuses on the linguistic strategies used to express trauma in the Psalms, especially references to the body and highly dramatic metaphors. Current analyses often approach trauma texts as tools intended to help sufferers heal. Verde contends that many group laments in the book of Psalms were transmitted not only to heal but also to wound the community, ensuring that the pain of a previous generation was not forgotten. The Language of Trauma in the Psalms shifts our understanding of trauma in biblical texts and will appeal to literary trauma scholars as well as those interested in ancient Israel.

Book Preventing Unjust War

  • Author : Roger Bergman
  • Publisher : Wipf and Stock Publishers
  • Release : 2020-12-15
  • ISBN : 153268665X
  • Pages : 216 pages

Download or read book Preventing Unjust War written by Roger Bergman and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2020-12-15 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Catholic pacifists blame the just war tradition of their Church. That tradition, they say, can be invoked to justify any war, and so it must be jettisoned. This book argues that the problem is not the just war tradition but the unjust war tradition. Ambitious rulers start wars that cannot be justified, and yet warriors continue to fight them. The problem is the belief that warriors do not hold any responsibility for judging the justice of the wars they are ordered to fight. However unjust, a command renders any war “just” for the obedient warrior. This book argues that selective conscientious objection, the right and duty to refuse to fight unjust wars, is the solution. Strengthening the just war tradition depends on a heightened role for the personal conscience of the warrior. That in turn depends on a heightened role for the Church in forming and supporting consciences and judging the justice of particular wars. As Saint Augustine wrote, “The wise man will wage just wars. . . . For, unless the wars were just, he would not have to wage them, and in such circumstances he would not be involved in war at all.”

Book Imperial Pilgrims

Download or read book Imperial Pilgrims written by Shawn A. Aghajan and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2022-03-29 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an Augustinian interrogation of contemporary Christian accounts of empire, just war, and terrorism. Though Augustine’s voice has guided much of the Christian discourse in these conjoined arenas, it has not shielded his work from being misappropriated to serve ends that are inimical to his own. The US “war on terror” is the most recent and egregious example of violence that many theologians have unjustly baptized as “Augustinian.” By reading Augustine pastorally rather than merely polemically, this work offers a counter-narrative and an alternative praxis for the American Christian trying to reconcile her baptism with her citizenship.

But human nature hasn't changed through the ages: War and faith and love still move princes and nations. In Lamentation, the first entry in the Psalm of Isaak series, an ancient weapon has completely destroyed the city of Windwir. From many miles away, Rudolfo, Lord of the Nine Forest Houses, sees the horrifying column of smoke rising. He knows that war is coming to the Named Lands. Nearer to the Devastation, a young apprentice is the only survivor of the city—he sat waiting for his father outside the walls, and was transformed as he watched everyone he knew die in an instant. Soon all the Kingdoms of the Named Lands will be at each others' throats, as alliances are challenged and hidden plots are uncovered. Book Wounded Warrior Wounded Home

Download or read book Wounded Warrior Wounded Home written by Marshele Carter and published by Baker Books. This book was released on 2013-03-01 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For every wounded warrior, there is a wounded home--an immediate and extended family and community impacted by their loved one's war experiences. Every day service members are returning from combat deployments to their families. And every day war comes home with them. When a combat veteran struggles with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and/or traumatic brain injury (TBI), every member of the family experiences the effects. Spouses, parents, and children must undergo changes on the home front, a process that resembles the phases of grief. Confusion, hurt, anger, guilt, fatigue, and fear lie behind their brave smiles and squared shoulders. Wounded Warrior, Wounded Home gives hurting families a look inside the minds and hearts of wounded warriors and guides them in developing their own personal plan for physical, emotional, and spiritual wholeness in the wake of war. The authors, one the wife of a career US Navy SEAL and the other a clinical psychologist and Vietnam veteran, speak from their own experiences of living with PTSD and TBI. They also share insights from dozens of families and careful research, offering readers a hope-filled way forward.
