Book Psalm 84 11 Truly Yahweh God is a Sun and a Shield

Download or read book Psalm 84 11 Truly Yahweh God is a Sun and a Shield written by Joel Streckner and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 163 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis is an exploration of the solar metaphor in Psalm 84:11. Recent metaphorical research in biblical studies has relied upon the theories of cognitive linguistics, which sees metaphor as a fundamental and foundational element of human thought. We offer a critique of this position, informed in large part by the work of analytical philosopher Josef Stern. His account of metaphor provides a more robust methodology for pursuing contextual questions which abut upon a metaphor's interpretation. From this position, we undertake two surveys: a survey of the portrayal of ANE solar deities in extant hymns and prayers, and a survey of solar and luminous lexemes which occur in the Old Testament ... After these two surveys, we offer an exposition of Psalm 84 from a canonical perspective, which sees the psalm as part of a larger exilic or post-exilic re-engagement with the symbols which lay at the nexus of Israel's identity. From these converging contexts, we argue that it is best to read the solar metaphor of Yahweh in Psalm 84:11 as one which connotes his justice and, more specifically, as a metaphor which yearns for Yahweh's deliverance.

Book The Psalms of the Sons of Korah

Download or read book The Psalms of the Sons of Korah written by Michael D. Goulder and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 1983-02-01 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this innovative study, a different approach to the study of the Psalms from that represented by form criticism is attempted. What is determinative here is the context given to the psalms in their positions in the Psalter: that is, the collections in which they are gathered, the order in which they stand, and the technical notes (Maskil, Selah, and the like) in the text. The application of this approach to one group of psalms, the psalms of the sons of Korah (42-49, 84-85, 87-88 + 89), results in the theory, developed with the author's characteristic flair and originality, that the Korah psalms stand in their original order as the liturgy of the national festival at the Danite sanctuary. Its many fresh and persuasive exegetical suggestions make this work an essential acquisition for the student of the Psalter.

Book excerpt: In this final volume of his series on preaching Christ from the Old Testament, Sidney Greidanus offers expert guidance for busy pastors on preaching Christ from Psalms. Beginning with a general introduction on how pastors can interpret and preach from the biblical psalms -- and why they should -- Greidanus proceeds by discussing twenty-two psalms in the Revised Common Lectionary, Year A, supplying the building blocks necessary to preach from Psalms at Christmas, Easter, Pentecost, and other major days and seasons of the church year. In addition to laying out basic homiletical-theological approaches suitable for each selected psalm, these chapters also provide verse-by-verse exposition, bridges to Christ in the New Testament, and ideas for placing the psalmist's words into contemporary context.

Book excerpt: A launching pad for your spiritual journey, this inspiring bookprovides clear, specific, and practical guidelines for becoming a Christian who lives like Christ. Christians today live in a world that is activity heavy and relationship light. The result is spiritual emptiness. We struggle to know what God wants from us and for us . . . and we’re unsure what a real relationship with God really looks like. But that was never God’s idea. HIS idea of faith is not about rules or religion— it’s about relationship. That’s where God tells us to start. In Romans 12, God gives us a clear picture of what Christians should look like at the root level. If you’re ready to move from “in” to “all in,” then you’re ready to become a Romans 12 Christian. The next steps of your journey toward true spirituality start here.

Book The Branch Exposition of the Bible Volume 2

Download or read book The Branch Exposition of the Bible Volume 2 written by Michael A. Eaton and published by Langham Publishing. This book was released on 2024-09-30 with total page 2690 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A great deal of biblical scholarship is written for academics and fails to edify readers or strengthen their Christian ministry. Yet, Christians need to be nourished by the word of God so they can mature in faith and righteousness. Filling this gap, The Branch Exposition of the Bible is a resource for preachers, scholars and ordinary Christians alike, to help open God’s word and shed its light into life, ministry and teaching. Inspired by the words of the great reformer Martin Luther about shaking every branch of Scripture, and with experience in ministering across Africa, India and the West, Michael A. Eaton helps us understand the meaning of the Bible and taste its fruit. Together with the New Testament volume, this exposition of the Old Testament accessibly engages with the biblical languages, gives application for our lives and leads us through each book of the Old Testament so that we can meet the resurrected Jesus Christ in the pages of Scripture.

Download or read book Kingdom Prologue written by Meredith G. Kline and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2006-02-01 with total page 419 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As intimated by the subtitle, 'Genesis Foundations for a Covenantal Worldview', the immediate literary focus of this study is the book of Genesis and its account of the formative ages in the eschatological movement of the kingdom of God from creation to consummation. As also indicated by the subtitle, our biblical-theological commentary on Genesis is designed to uncover the foundations of God's covenantally administered kingdom with its major historical developments and its institutional structures and functions. In this way 'Kingdom Prologue' seeks to provide an introductory sketch of the overall shape of the biblical worldview and the character of biblical religion.
