Fue as como se perdieron en la ciudad de Mxico legados importantes de arquitectura, por los efectos del sismo de 1985. A partir de ese entonces somos mejores: aprendimos que la arquitectura est ligada a las condiciones de su entorno. La Torre Latinoamericana es un icono de la Ciudad de Mxico porque conjunta arquitectura, estructura, cimentacin y sismo. El sismo de 1957 permiti reconocer el avance que se estaba logrando al integrar el diseo ssmico y la arquitectura. El de 1985 nos record que esa integracin no es opcional, es necesaria. Esto exige que la participacin del arquitecto y el ingeniero sea estrecha para beneficio de todos. El costo en vidas y los daos materiales se minimizan en la medida en que se incrementen las consideraciones ssmicas en los proyectos arquitectnicos. El presente libro lo introduce a uno en el tema, cmo y por qu se originan los sismos, cules son los principales elementos a considerar en el clculo de las fuerzas ssmicas, y cmo se integran esos resultados en el diseo final. Es mrito del autor haberlo logrado: su formacin acadmica de licenciatura en ingeniera civil, su postgrado en arquitectura y su desarrollo profesional en ambas actividades, lo han permitido. Es as como logra llevar al lector en un recorrido que permite visualizar la importancia del proyecto arquitectnico en zonas ssmicas. Explica de manera amena los elementos bsicos que se requiere conocer de fsica, sismologa y estructuras para llegar a los conceptos de coeficiente ssmico y espectro de diseo. Aborda el efecto de los sismos en los suelos: los tipos de suelos y sus caractersticas, los reglamentos de inters y comentarios en paralelo para ampliar las perspectivas del tema. Contina con el efecto de los sismos en los edificios, el comportamiento de sus elementos y sistemas estructurales. Presenta las condiciones de diseo arquitectnico en zonas ssmicas y las configuraciones antissmicas a considerar. Completa este marco general con el comportamiento de los diversos sistemas estructurales y los procesos aplicables, indicando las precauciones que deben tenerse durante su construccin. Al final presenta casos prcticos, que son ejemplos actuales de proyectos urbanos que no son ajenos al lector. We con sider the practical courses held all over the world essential for the teaching of sound techniques so that technical complications and poor results can be avoid ed for both the surgeon and, in particular the patient. This book is a practical manual and an outline of what is taught in the courses. It is intended to help the young spinal surgeon to understand the correct use of AO implants. The indi- tions given will aid the correct use of each procedure. . It must be strongly emphasized that surgery of the spine is technically de manding. The techniques described in this book should only be undertaken by surgeons who are trained and experienced in spinal surgery. Certain techniques, in particular pedicle screw fIxation and cages, have not yet been fully approved by the FDA in the United States. However, throughout the rest of the world, the use of pedicle screws has become a standard technique for the spine surgeon, since it has been shown to improve fIxation techniques and allow segmental correction of the spine. The use of cages has become more and more popular, specifIcally as a tool of minimally invasive spinal surgery.
