Book The Development of International Banking in Asia

Download or read book The Development of International Banking in Asia written by Takeshi Nishimura and published by Springer. This book was released on 2020-09-13 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To provide an understanding of financial globalization from a historical point of view, this book sheds light on international banking in Asia before World War II. International banking facilitated the relationship between Asian economic development and international financial centres. Focusing on the origins of a wide variety of banks not just from Europe but beyond Europe, such as the United States and Asia, particularly Japan and China, this book comprehensively explores competition and collaboration among international banks in Asia. It clarifies international banking’s role of integrating the global market and the impact on both ends of the global economy—the international financial centres in the developed world and the developing economies in Asia. Economic development in Asia from the late nineteenth century to the 1930s as a part of the globalizing economy mirrors Asia’s current role as the global economic-growth powerhouse. This book focuses on the two key similarities between Asia’s past and present: intra-Asian relationships and the relationship between Asia and developed economies, namely, Europe, the United States, and Japan. Getting into the heart of the relationships, i.e., finance, this book presents a sophisticated and realistic image of the tangled network of international economic relations, distinguished from the conventional image of a one-sided advantage or disadvantage among involved nations.

Book Turkey and the Holocaust

Download or read book Turkey and the Holocaust written by Stanford J. Shaw and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-07-27 with total page 445 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The neutrality maintained by Turkey during most of the Second World War enabled it to rescue thousands of Jews from the Holocaust in the Nazi-occupied or collaborating countries of Europe. This book shows how in France, the Turkish consuls in Paris and Marseilles intervened to protect Turkish Jews from application of anti-Jewish laws introduced both by the German occupying authorities and the Vichy government and rescued them from concentration camps, getting them off trains destined for the extermination chambers in the East, and arranging train caravans and other special transportation to take them through Nazi-occupied territory to safety in Turkey. 'an important and unique addition to the vast scholarship available on that tragic era' Rabbi Abraham Cooper

Book Tibetan Nation

Download or read book Tibetan Nation written by Warren Smith and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-07-31 with total page 648 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This detailed history offers the most comprehensive account available of Tibetan nationalism, Sino-Tibetan relations, and the issue of Tibetan self-determination. Warren Smith explores Tibet's ethnic and national origins, the birth of the Tibetan state, the Buddhist state and its relations with China, Tibet's quest for independence, and the Chinese takeover of Tibet after 1950. Focusing especially on post-1950 Tibet under Chinese Communist rule, Smith analyzes Marxist-Leninist and Chinese Communist Party nationalities theory and policy, their application in Tibet, and the consequent rise of Tibetan nationalism. Concluding that the essence of the Tibetan issue is self-determination, Smith bolsters his argument with a comprehensive analysis of modern Tibetan and Chinese political histories.

Book How to Read Architecture

Download or read book How to Read Architecture written by Paulette Singley and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-06-26 with total page 463 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How to Read Architecture is based on the fundamental premise that reading and interpreting architecture is something we already do, and that close observation matters. This book enhances this skill so that given an unfamiliar building, you will have the tools to understand it and to be inspired by it. Author Paulette Singley encourages you to misread, closely read, conventionally read, and unconventionally read architecture to stimulate your creative process. This book explores three essential ways to help you understand architecture: reading a building from the outside-in, from the inside-out, and from the position of out-and-out, or formal, architecture. This book erodes boundaries between the frequently compartmentalized fields of interior design, landscape design, and building design with chapters exploring concepts of terroir, scenography, criticality, atmosphere, tectonics, inhabitation, type, form, and enclosure. Using examples and case studies that span a wide range of historical and global precedents, Singley addresses the complex interaction among the ways a building engages its context, addresses its performative exigencies, and operates as an autonomous aesthetic object. Including over 300 images, this book is an essential read for both undergraduate and postgraduate students of architecture with a global focus on the interpretation of buildings in their context.

Book In Exile from the Land of Snows

Download or read book In Exile from the Land of Snows written by John Avedon and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2015-01-06 with total page 514 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tibet, “the roof of the world,” had been aloof and at peace for most of its 2,100 years. But in 1932, the Thirteenth Dalai Lama, in his final testament, warned: “It may happen that here, in the center of Tibet, religion and government will be attacked both from without and from within.” By the time his successor was enthroned in 1950, the Chinese occupation had begun. In this gripping account, John F. Avedon draws on his work and travels with the Fourteenth Dalai Lama to bring us the riveting story of Tibet and its temporal and spiritual leader. Included is an extensive interview with the Dalai Lama, who speaks about the conditions in Tibet, the mind of a Buddha, and the events of his life. Rigorously researched, passionately written, the original edition of In Exile from the Land of Snows was instrumental in launching the modern Tibet movement when it was published in 1984. Now, some three decades later, Avedon’s testimony is more wrenching and relevant than ever.

Book Direct International Human Rights Obligations of Non state Actors

Download or read book Direct International Human Rights Obligations of Non state Actors written by Nicolás Carrillo-Santarelli and published by Wolf Legal Publishers. This book was released on 2017 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Addressing the reality that non-state actors do violate human rights in practice, which cannot be overlooked, author Nicolas Carrillo-Santarelli argues that the foundations and main principles of international human rights law call for the regulation of direct non-state obligations and responsibilities, given the potential failure of domestic actions and the limits of voluntary strategies. In part I, the author presents his ideas on why non-state abuses should be regarded as human rights violations and wrongful acts. Part II studies why direct protection from non-state violations is possible, and what legal mechanisms and institutions permit to make it effective. The final Chapter turns to the examination of the mechanisms that can be used to respond to or prevent non-state violations of human rights law. This book is based on the idea that the protagonists of human rights law are individuals, who deserve protection from all abusers, be they States, armed groups, international organizations, or other actors. Revised Dissertation. [Subject: Human Rights Law, International Law]
