Book Integrated Water Management in Canada

Download or read book Integrated Water Management in Canada written by Dan Shrubsole and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-12-07 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume provides readers with an opportunity to learn from front line water managers of watershed-based agencies across Canada about integrated water management (or integrated water resource management). In common with practice in much of the world, the responsibility for implementing integrated watershed management in Canada is fragmented. Each province and territory in Canada has developed unique approaches or governance models to guide decision making in that regard. Thus, this edited volume enables readers from around the world to gain insight on the best practices in Canada for achieving success and addressing barriers to implement IWM. Although there remains non consensus about how to "best" approach river basin management, some of the main observations include: There is a need to balance a focus on "the big picture", with scoping the scale and scope of planning activities in order that feasible and effective solutions can be implemented Three types of integration are popular among the agencies included in the book: (i) among environment, economy and society, (ii) interactions between people and the environment and (iii) integration (or coordination) of administrative activities. Much more attention is required to achieving effective engagement from Indigenous communities The chapters were originally published in a special issue of the International Journal of Water Resources Development.

Book Transboundary Policy Challenges in the Pacific Border Regions of North America

Download or read book Transboundary Policy Challenges in the Pacific Border Regions of North America written by Donald K. Alper and published by University of Calgary Press. This book was released on 2008 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Transboundary Policy Challenges" responds to a growing interest in borderlands environmental policy by highlighting significant transboundary research and practices being undertaken within and across the Pacific border regions of North America. Growing concern about the seriousness of environmental problems, particularly in high-growth border areas, coupled with the rising awareness of the complexities entailed in wise development decisions, has spurred recognition that new realities require new responses. Critical for effective environmental protection, restoration, and education is a sharing of understanding and effort across borders. "Transboundary Policy Challenges" advances transborder environmental research and discusses sensible policy directions with particular focus on critical areas of international concern and engagement: land and water use planning; regional growth management; trade and transportation corridors; environmental education; and travel and tourism. Contributors to the volume represent a range of disciplines, as well as institutions in Canada, the United States, and Mexico.

Book Planning Cities with Nature

Download or read book Planning Cities with Nature written by Fabiano Lemes de Oliveira and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-02-04 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores novel theories, strategies and methods for re-naturing cities. It enables readers to learn from best practice and advances the current theoretical and empirical understanding in the field. The book also offers valuable insights into how planners and policymakers can apply this knowledge to their own cities and regions, exploring top-down, bottom-up and mixed mechanisms for the systemic re-naturing of planned and existing cities. There is considerable interest in ‘naturalising’ cities, since it can help address multiple global societal challenges and generate various benefits, such as the enhancement of health and well-being, sustainable urbanisation, ecosystems and their services, and resilience to climate change. This can also translate into tangible economic benefits in terms of preventing health hazards, positively affecting health-related expenditure, new job opportunities (i.e. urban farming) and the regeneration of urban areas. There is, thus, a compelling case to investigate integrative approaches to urban and natural systems that can help cities address the social, economic and environmental needs of a growing population. How can we plan with nature? What are the models and approaches that can be used to develop more sustainable cities that provide high-quality urban green spaces?

Book The Power of Unreasonable People

Download or read book The Power of Unreasonable People written by John Elkington and published by Harvard Business Press. This book was released on 2008 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The playwright George Bernard Shaw once said "The reasonable man adapts himself to the world; the unreasonable one persists in trying to adapt the world to himself. Therefore, all progress depends on the unreasonable man." Highly unconventional capitalists and entrepreneurs who are solving some of the world's great economic, social, and environmental problems are, in the process, disrupting existing industries, value chains, and business models, and replacing them with fast-growing markets in all corners of the world. The Power of Unreasonable People argues that leaders and decision-makers can gain insight into the future of market opportunity from the mindset and strategies of this new type of entrepreneur. The book offers an on-the-ground look at social entrepreneurs by identifying a new breed of "unreasonable" entrepreneurs, explaining how their enterprises have been built, exploring the impact of their work on future market risks and opportunities, and finally highlighting lessons for tomorrow's leaders. Incumbents who recognize the value of investing in, partnering with, and learning from these entrepreneurial operations will be better positioned to adapt to the disruption and adopt new business practices. John Elkington is the Founder, Chief Entrepreneur, and Non-Executive Director of the international consultancy SustainAbility. Pamela Hartigan is Managing Director for the Schwab Foundation for Social Entrepreneurship.

Book Innovation Science Environment 08 09

Download or read book Innovation Science Environment 08 09 written by Glen Toner and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2008-05-23 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rapidly developing changes in technology, scientific knowledge, and domestic and international environmental issues force analysts to constantly reevaluate how public policy is coping. Are governments leading, following, or falling behind other societal actors? This third volume in a series of annual assessments of Canadian public policy provides an innovative approach to evaluating key developments in one of the most challenging areas of public policy in the twenty-first century. Leading experts look at crucial issues such as climate change, sustainable development policy tools, science management, and the international approach to governing intellectual property. They address recent developments within the pesticide, wildlife, and infrastructure policy areas involving the federal government and key private and non-governmental players. The 2008-09 volume explores the role of governments in a number of key areas, showing that while government institutions and policies should be part of the solution to the complex array of science and technology and environment and development issues facing Canadians, too often it appears they are part of the problem. Contributors include Glen Toner (Carleton), Robert Paehlke (Trent), Mark Jaccard and Rose Murphy (Simon Fraser), Jac van Beek (Canada Foundation for Innovation) and Frances Issaacs (National Research Council of Canada), Sara Bannerman (Carleton), Robert Gibson (Waterloo), David Robinson (Laurentian), Francois Bregha (Stratos Inc.), Scott Findlay and Annick Dezeil (Ottawa), Robert Hilton and Christopher Stoney (Carleton), and Jeremy Wilson (Victoria)."
