Book Understanding Energy Security in Central and Eastern Europe

Download or read book Understanding Energy Security in Central and Eastern Europe written by Wojciech Ostrowski and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-04-09 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this book is to move beyond the approach which views energy as a purely geopolitical tool of the Russian state and assumes a 'one size fits all' approach to energy security in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE). It argues that in order to fully understand Russian involvement in the regional energy complex, the CEE-Russian energy relationship should be analysed in the context of the political and economic transitions that Russia and the CEE states underwent. The chapters on individual countries in the book demonstrate that, although Russia has and will continue to play a substantial role in the CEE energy sector, the scope of its possible influence has been overstated.

Book Politics and Security of Central and Eastern Europe

Download or read book Politics and Security of Central and Eastern Europe written by Ryszard Zięba and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-02-14 with total page 355 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book analyzes major contemporary political and security problems in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE). Presenting case studies on various CEE countries, it highlights the persistence of non-democratic political trends in the region, with particular emphasis on authoritarianism in Belarus and the illiberal shift in the politics of Hungary and Poland. Also, the book examines the growing geopolitical and military rivalry between the West and Russia in the CEE region, which led to Russia's invasion of Ukraine. After addressing the increasing involvement of external entities such as NATO, the EU, the USA, Germany, France, and China, it highlights serious internal and external challenges to the democratic institutions and international security of CEE that call for new formats of multilateral cooperation to be established by the region’s countries. This book is intended for scholars and students of European politics, international relations and security studies, and for anyone interested in the political and security challenges facing the CEE region.

Book excerpt: This volume reports on the success and failures in the efforts of eleven Central and East European transformation countries in the reform of their respective security sectors over the past decade. The case studies analyse and assess whether and to what extent the norms, concepts, standards and operational requirements commonly associated with the notion of security sector reform were addressed in the recent and ongoing democratization processes. Beyond the level of each individual case, it analyses which criteria have been conducive or are considered to be instrumental to the ultimate results. The book addresses practical problems of security sector reform, and aims mainly at ï providing comprehensive and detailed information on security sector reform in several Central and East European states, developing a synthesis of what happened in each individual country; ï searching for analogies and similarities that would allow for practical conlcusions on generally applicable criteria for success, and ï offering practical tools for the assessment of success and failure in SSR.

Book Building Security in Europe s New Borderlands

Download or read book Building Security in Europe s New Borderlands written by Renata Dwan and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-07-08 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While European integration advances, many of the countries along Europe's eastern and southern periphery have fallen prey to chronic conflict punctuated by a series of small wars. Exacerbating the situation has been the lack of effective organizational means for mediating local conflicts, facilitating regional development and structuring cooperation with larger regional and international institutions. What are the prospects for enhancing security in the most volatile subregions of post-communist Europe? This text examines the external and internal factors that impede or foster subregional cooperation in South-Eastern and East-Central Europe and the Caucasus. It includes chapters situating these borderlands in the context of a wider Europe with an evolving security architecture.

Download or read book New Forms of Security written by Pál Dunay and published by Dartmouth Publishing Company. This book was released on 1995 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It has become a truism to say that the security agenda for the 1990s cannot be the same as that which prevailed during the Long Peace of the period 1945-1990. This book addresses the changed security situation in Europe. It attempts to elucidate what it means to be a European by focusing on fears for a collective future and on proposals to improve it. It demonstrates that a European-wide consensus is emerging that needs to be fully absorbed by the institutional structures that attempt to direct security matters on the Continent.

Book Reform Reintegration and Regional Security

It examines the policies of the major donors and the major institutions, in particular the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development as the first post-Cold War international organization. It also suggests how assistance programmes have implications for a regional security as leaders of the United States and the European twelve especially try to redesign European àrchitecture' to fit the needs of post-Cold War Europe.

Book Democratization and Security in Central and Eastern Europe and the Post Soviet States

Download or read book Democratization and Security in Central and Eastern Europe and the Post Soviet States written by David Bosold and published by Nomos Verlagsgesellschaft. This book was released on 2012 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two decades after the fall of the Berlin wall, this book takes stock of the democratization processes in Central and Eastern Europe and the post-Soviet states. The chapters highlight the security-related aspects of the transition which relate, inter alia, to the aspect of NATO membership of Central and Eastern European states and their political and security relations with Russia. The case studies reveal that the commonly used classification of the political landscape into successful democracies - in Central and Eastern Europe on the one hand and largely autocratic regimes on the other - is too simplistic. To fully grasp the nature of the current challenges and the potential for further reforms, a more detailed analysis is needed. Book New Security Challenges in Postcommunist Europe

Download or read book New Security Challenges in Postcommunist Europe written by Andrew Cottey and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2002 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cubism was the most influential artistic movement that emerged in the twentieth century. The hallmarks of its style were stamped on the art, design and architecture and its aesthetic principles governed the representation of modernity across all the arts. Yet just what cubism was, or stood for, at the time of its emergence is still in dispute, while the explanations offered for its importance for twentieth-century art, and its legacy for the present, are bewildering in their variety. This fascinating book offers a way beyond this confusion: a narrative of its beginnings, consolidation and dissemination that takes into account not only what the style and the movement signified at the time of its emergence but also the principal writings through which cubism's significance for modernism has been established. Visually stunning with over 100 illustrations, this is an essential work for all students and teachers of modern art history.
