Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This proceedings volume represents the culmination of nearly three years of planning, organizing and carrying out of a NATO Ad vanced Study Institute on Biomass Utilization. The effort was initi ated by Dr. Harry Sobel, then Editor of Biosources Digest, and a steering committee representing the many disciplines that this field brings together. . When the fiscal and logistical details of the original plan could not be worked out, the idea was temporarily suspended. In the spring of 1982, the Renewable Materials Institute of the State University of New York at the College of Environmental Science and Forestry in Syracuse, New York revived the plan. A number of modifications had to be made, including the venue which was changed from the U.S.A. to Portugal. Additional funding beyond the basic support provided by the Scientific Affairs Division of NATO had to be obtained. Ul timately there were supplementary grants from the Foundation for Microbiology and the Anne S. Richardson Fund to assist student participants. The New York State College of Forestry Foundation, Inc. provided major support through the Renewable Ma terials Institute. The ASI was held in Alcabideche, Portugal from September 26 to October 9, 1982. Eighty participants including fifteen principal lecturers were assembled at the Hotel Sintra Estoril for the program that was organized as a comprehensive course on biomass utilization. The main lectures were supplemented by relevant short papers offered by the participants.

Book The Role of Air Power in the Iran Iraq War

Download or read book The Role of Air Power in the Iran Iraq War written by Ronald E. Bergquist and published by Createspace Independent Pub. This book was released on 2012-08-07 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report is an outgrowth of the questions raised in the fall of 1980 and spring of 1981 about the conduct of air operations in the war between Iran and Iraq. Unlike previous Middle Eastern wars, this one had continued over a protracted period while we in the United States and in the US Air Force had been able to observe it only from a distance. As the war haltingly progressed, we began to have a fair picture of what was going on in the air war, though our information was far from complete or detailed. The sketchy picture that emerged, however, seemed to indicate that combatants were using their airpower assets in way contrary to our expectations. Most notably, it seemed that both sides seemed content not to use their airpower and relied instead on ground forces for most combat operations. This report examines the air war between Iran and Iraq, but rather than attempt simply to lay out what happened in the war, it attempts to discern why Iran and Iraq used their airpower as they did. The results of this study do not call into question any basic US Air Force airpower approaches, but they do highlight significant considerations that affect the use of airpower by Third World nations.

Book The Variables of Composition

Download or read book The Variables of Composition written by Glenn J. Broadhead and published by SIU Press. This book was released on 1986 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Describing the variables of composition, offering researchers a methodology with which to investigate how the variables interact in specific writing strategies, and suggesting how teachers might make use of the variables of revision to help students learn successful writing strategies appropriate to a business setting, this book reports a research study designed to (1) extend the analysis of revision into a "real world" context by examining the revising practices of proposal writers in a management consulting firm; (2) describe writers' motives and intentions in generating and revising a text; and (3) achieve a balanced perspective by examining both the processes and products of composition. Chapters 1 and 2 describe the research methodology, including the seven-variable taxonomy for analyzing the composing and revising process. Chapter 3 applies this taxonomy by describing the institutional procedures, values, and constraints characteristic of the "real world" environment selected for the study: a large management-consulting firm. Chapter 4 analyzes and compares in detail the rhetorical choices made in proposals written by two management consultants, providing further insight into the methodological and theoretical bases of the study. The final chapter summarizes the findings and presents implications for research and teaching. Material regarding the variables of revision, sentence structures, and statistical analyses of composing/revising processes are appended. (JD)

Book An Enterprise Map of Zambia

Download or read book An Enterprise Map of Zambia written by John Sutton and published by . This book was released on 2013-04 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the first decade of the new millennium, Zambia's real GDP rose by 80%. Much of this rise came from the mining sector, but a substantial fraction came from the manufacturing sector, whose output rose by 50% in real terms over the decade. This volume provides a detailed account of Zambia's current industrial capabilities. From mining-related industries through general manufacturing, agribusiness and construction, it describes the structure of each of the country's major industries. It provides detailed profiles of fifty leading industrial companies that together represent the frontier of current capabilities in each area of activity. Along the way, it addresses key issues of current interest. Where did the capabilities of Zambia's leading industrial companies come from? How many of these companies came from abroad? How many had their origins in the public sector? And how many were set up by domestic trading companies that began local manufacturing operations? The copper industry generates three-quarters of Zambia's export earnings. But to what extent has Zambia developed downstream capabilities in the manufacture of copper products? How large a role is China playing in the flow of Foreign Direct Investment to Zambia? And in what industries are Chinese companies active? This is the fourth volume in John Sutton's "Enterprise Map" series, which profiles the industrial capabilities of selected countries in sub-Saharan Africa. Volumes on Ethiopia, Ghana and Tanzania have already appeared. The forthcoming fifth volume will be on Mozambique.
